Well i have put in my pre-order for Skyrim, Bethesda's hotly anticipated game, which will probably be the second coming of christ to most gamers. but I however have never had any exposure to The Elder Scrolls until after i finished playing Fallout 3 for the first time. still having not played Oblivion, Morrowind, and anything before it, i decided to jump into the franchise when everyone was looking at the latest game with awe. now I fucking loved fallout 3 and it's easily one of my favourite games despite it being as bleak, and missing the reputation system from previous games. New Vegas was exactly something that improved on fallout 3 despite it being buggy as all fuck.

Now as someone who hasn't played the Elder Scrolls series, what can I be in for, besides dragons, vast landscape, and swords? I know the game isn't out, but I'm sure the game will be a build upon previous games with a host of new features. Should i be waiting anticipatingly or go cancel my pre-order.

A lot of experimentation characters. You'll probably beat the game with a preferred archetype (magic, melee, stealth, hybrid)but after that a lot of time can and probably will be spent experimenting with other character types. Oblivion was the game that got me hooked to rogue/thief characters. I had finished Morrowind with a heavy armored, claymore wielding Dunmer (A race I never used in Oblivion) and while my first character in Oblivion was a typical Imperial legionnaire all of my later characters were Kajhit or Bosmer thieves. This is mostly due, in my opinion, to the fact that the stealth mechanic in Morrowind didn't work too well, though. The Elder Scrolls series allows for all sorts of experimentation with class preferences because of the wide open world. You're not getting shoehorned into the main quest immediately, you have the choice to run around and find your preferred play style first.

Like most other Bethesda games the main quest usually pales in comparison to the side-quests. I've always seen the Elder Scrolls series as a game that you immerse yourself in, one where you want to poke at every nook and cranny, not one where you rush to get to the end credits.

And like the guy above me said, Mods, the PC version is all about the mods, while just playing vanilla may take you hundreds of hours to get through if your just mucking around, mods add an even longer shelf life to the game with additional quests, new races and abilities, full on conversions, and much more.
