Causing certain forms of negative response to one's own amusement.

It's not as simple as pushing someone into killing themselves, dropping n-bombs everywhere, or vandalizing facebook.

It's saying inflammatory things to illicit a response from someone who doesn't realise you're not serious. So an example:

Justin Bieber is the best fucking singer ever you faggots.

Then someone replies:

You're and idiot, he's one of the worst singers of the last 50 years.

Troll replies:

U mad?

Hey people!

I'm writing a research proposal about online deviancy and am running into difficulty defining 'trolling'. While I thought I knew, it would seem that the term is actually somewhat subjective. Some people say it's the same as flaming, others say that it incites flaming... others just pass off any vulgar online communication as the act of a troll.

For example, on BBC News, they said a guy went to prison for trolling the memorial page of a child mauled to death by a dog, saying he performed sexual acts with the corpse. That doesn't fit my idea of trolling as it's far too overt and obvious. Am I wrong?

If you could spare the time to give me your definition of 'trolling', I'd be really appreciative.

Cheers!
Trolling is the posting of something inflammatory, extraneous to the topic and often controversial in the deliberate attempt to provoke other users into an emotional response with the ultimate intent to disrupt the normal flow of on-topic discussion.

Hope this helps.

I'm a troll..!

..No wait. Maybe the way I write is just a little too critical for some people on here. (And I do, deal with it).
I dont like everything and if somebody starts a thread that gives me the opportunity to express my thoughts on something I dont particulary enjoy then I will. And most passionately. Because a three or four-word response can hardly be considered decent conversation can it..
But sometimes I have to get my flame shield out and wait until the Escapist children go to bed. But that doesnt make me a troll.

It has been said alot on here. A troll does what he does for the attention, give the troll attention and you have created a very proud fully fledged troll.

I cant say what I think a troll is because it seems like in the past, people who are obviously trolling just come across to me as somebody who just decided to write a rather fruitful opinion on the topic at hand. And I will either dissagree with him/her or gladly agree with the effort he/she has made. Because that's what I expect to do on a forum. If he/she has lied for the sake of pissing people off then shame on them but it wouldn't bother me either way. I came here to read and discuss, not beat somebody down for writing something. This is a public forum afterall.
