In general people on the Internet are a lot worse than you meet in real life. It helps you develop a "thick" skin, so to speak. Just try not to take things personally. They don't know you and you don't know them and it's unlikely you'll ever meet face-to-face. What I like to do when people insult me during a game is to reply to them as politely as possible, and apologize, while keeping a polite tone (without sounding insulting) and they generally back off. If it gets worse, maybe it's time to leave for a while and take a breather. Also try to think back on the good memories you had of playing online with nicer people. We remember the bad things more vividly than the good things.

The only multiplayer I've really played is TF2 so I don't have anything to compare it to. But I've heard that it has a decent and polite playerbase, and it's true if you find a good server or clan to play with. I've been playing since March 2010 and I can say confidently that the number of times I've encountered a rager or someone who generally likes to be mean and discourage people from having fun for their own sick pleasure is less than 10. And I've been playing quite a lot over the months. I dread to think of the other multiplayer games which have worse reputations for the multiplayer experience.
I've recently picked up Left 4 Dead 2 and I think that game has higher potential for being griefed or insulted because there's less people. I got votekicked out of a random pub game once for absolutely no reason; I was just quietly playing the game and doing the objectives. It was very bewildering. Now I refuse to play that game unless with friends.

i decided to trade it in to gamestop, there some jackass who was shopping there goes "you cant trade that in, you just didnt like it because you suck at all games. where do you live? im gonna break them all to make sure i dont play with you online." a feint stomp with my boot cast(i twisted my foot earlier and borrowed it from my dad) made him stay away. then last month, i decided to rent it to see if the troublemakers got weeded out. same problems. and usually whenever i explain why i dont like this series anymore, the main response? "you deserve it"
This actually happened? First of all, what you described that guy doing fits the legal definition of assault -- at least if you had reason to believe he'd carry it out. Second, it's a big WTF unless we're talking about some elementary school bully -- even middle school bullies aren't that dumb, and something tells me this wasn't just some kid anyway.

As for the rest of the post, I really haven't encountered what you're talking about. I've seen the occasional game that has been entirely given over to hackers, and I've seen the occasional rager, but nothing as widespread as you're describing. It may really be the game; for example, my roommate plays a lot of MW2, and I see more trashtalk in one session of that game than I do in a month's worth of any of the games I play.

Unless the forums you mentioned are /v/ and whatever the computer subforum of 4-chan is, in which case you were asking for it...
im not stupid enough to be serious on 4chan

I didn't actually think you were, but what you described sounds like the kind of crap Anonymous might pull. I guess I should have finished that comment with an emoticon, rather than an elipsis.

a few months ago, i bought monster hunter tri. after beating a few missions i decide to do online missions with other hunters. i kept on getting kicked by the other players then getting killed. going on forums, someone will say "come with us. well need a helping hand." then after getting into a mission with them, theyd all abandon me when a big monster came around and if i tried to follow their lead, theyd kick me down to make sure i got killed(and send insults to me through wii speak or usb keyboard).

i decided to trade it in to gamestop, there some jackass who was shopping there goes "you cant trade that in, you just didnt like it because you suck at all games. where do you live? im gonna break them all to make sure i dont play with you online." a feint stomp with my boot cast(i twisted my foot earlier and borrowed it from my dad) made him stay away. then last month, i decided to rent it to see if the troublemakers got weeded out. same problems. and usually whenever i explain why i dont like this series anymore, the main response? "you deserve it"

then recently i decided to start gaming on my pc, well a few games started running laggy or wouldnt even start(turns out i need a new graphics card), so i tried getting help online and you could probably guess where im going with this...

so i have to ask, why are people so violent acting towards other gamers who just want to have fun playing online?is it really worth it turning others away from series and genres?

and before you ask, no i wont play MH with you. im never playing it again
Wow, sounds like you got really unlucky with the assholes. I play monster hunter tri alot and I never had to deal with that. The worst I had was dealing with people who weren't very good at the game. And although you said you weren't playing ever again, if you gamed with me I just want you to know that you would not have any of that shit happen to you. At worst I may randomly drop from the game because my connection just kicks that much ass. So if you're willing to give the game another chance, hit me up. I would really hate for your experience to a great game be ruined by a bunch of assholes.

This is the reason I don't play on line games. I started gaming with an Atari 2800 when I was 5 (for bonus points, how old does that make me?) and for some 12 year old with no life, a lot of virginity and too much attitude to tell me I'M a noob?
Put them on mute, and keep trying till you have a friends list that does not include butt-wipes. Otherwise, save some cash and throw your modem....

People used do that to me too, then I just stopped playing multiplayer games. God that was years ago ...
Yeah I don't know why people are assholes. But they are, and there's nothing you can do about it besides don't let it get to you, and avoid it when possible.

Playing with friends is my only real suggestion. Friends are a fickle bunch though. Sometimes they're your friends, other times they're bribing you into playing games they want play (I recall a gruelling few hours in which they tried to teach me the basics of StarCraft as I kicked and screamed wondering when we'd get to more Left 4 Dead). But hey, it beats jumping onto Xbox LIVE and being called a ******.

Yeah this happened to me on Red Dead Redemption. I finally decided to start farming the online achievements but I kept getting killed before I could do anything. Everytime I joined a posse my fucking team mates would kill me or my horse every few seconds. I quit and haven't tried again since. The worst part is that Red Dead Redemption is one of the two games on my profile that I haven't maxed out the achievements for.

Unfortunately there really is nothing you can do about dickheads like this. The best you can hope for is that your friends have the game as well and you can play with them online. Co-op random game joining is a colossal waste of time that will always end up with you being abandoned by your asshole team mates.

I believe it's a classic example of the Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory. [http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/3/19/] Also you've pretty much isolated why I never play games online.

Does the game you experience this problem with have online stat tracking? If so, there's the problem right there. Stat-Tracking, for strictly competitive multiplayer. Prestige over fun every time.

Ya going online you will always find a few pricks, no game is the exception, the worst I found is Xbox+Halo combo that seems to be a dick magnet.
The solution is to get the right group of people, either your friends or gamers from a decent community.
My favorite is the NoobToob Army, playing with them I never encountered a dick, and they put together gaming events and all sorts of things, I recommend it to anyone who wants good clean online fun.

you know what id of said to that prick who said you couldnt trade that in? id of pointed out that i have a girlfriend and that i could break him in two but thats just me:)
OT: i usualy dont have this problem but ive found that any game whos main player base is under 15 then your gonna get alot of assholes(why i dont play COD online period or halo with out a majority of friends) my advice update your graphics card and get an RTS online game less problems.
