as my dad once said "they do it so they have a job to fix the patches they make and keep getting paid". so im alright with it if it means some game designer can eat today.

Games are complicated.

Patches that cause issues cause more stir than patches that don't.

All the work, all the coding, all the STUFF that goes into video games is complicated. Trying to patch something that is broken is like tampering with DNA. Tweak one little piece too much, and instead of a human you get a monkey. It's actually rather amazing that this doesn't happen more often.
The only patch that bothers me is the Dragon Age Origins one. To this day, they have still not fixed the fact that, if the patches are installed, you can't get the "Kill X number of Darkspawn" trophies. I JUST got Blight Queller last week, and I've played through that game eight different times now. That's just wrong.

Not just the games. Peoples computers are so complex these days, its a wonder anyone can get anything to work on different hardware.

I've played WoW since Vanilla, and it's impossible for Blizzard to implement a patch without breaking something. To be fair they intentionally cause most of the breaking, aside from that farce of a launch with Cataclysm they've always been pretty solid on the technical side.

Aside from that I don't really have any experiance with patches breaking the game.

patches are almost always gonna screw with something, but there is an increase of patches breaking more than they fix, which is unacceptable outside of a rare freak-occurrence. but i dont really have a problem with patches breaking things...its when devs never bother to fix them that irks me. i remember with DAO there was a relatively common bug of severe attack delay (you would hit something and 5 seconds later damage would register...so you could kill something in one hit but it would still attack you for a awhile). instead of fixing it, every subsequent patch made it WORSE, and because the expansion only works with the 1.3 patch, the only way for me to play it is to play it with upwards of 15 second attack delay.

it really seems simple to me; if a patch breaks more than it fixes, DONT RELEASE IT! doctors dont release a flu vaccine that gives 1 in 10 people cancer, so developers have no excuse for releasing broken patches. some things will slip by what passes for playtesting nowadays, but i have a really hard time believing some patch-induced bugs went unnoticed by devs without them actively ignoring them, especially when 3 patches later theyre still ignoring them.

the solution is right in front of our faces actually; finish developing the bloody game so that it plays smoothly, and you wont have to risk fucking everything up with desperately needed patches.

My only complaint is that notch broke my super-fast boatway D:

I'll get over it...
