how to get an answer to your question
step 1. get on the internet using a device of your choice
step 2. type what you want to know about into google
step 3. click on some relevant links
step 4. read the information on those links

to answer your question its an overpriced table top strategy game, play any total war game and you get the same thing but better and cheaper
Actually, if you look it up on google or on the GW website, you'll find no references to it being "overpriced". Most people have an undying devotion for it (the reason why escapes me still).
Also, Total War won't give you the same feeling as the tabletop, or any tabletop for that matter. Tabletops are much more immersive and allow for a greater degree of control since you're directly in control and you don't have to worry about buggy AI.
Finally, you can be more creative with actual minis than with computers (for example: blowing up your disabled Baneblade in order to take out a squad of Terminators).

What is 40k? It's my entire hobby life since 1994. :p

I even have a 40k tattoo to show my devotion.

Personally, I would steer clear of the tabletop game. It cost me around 1.5k for my Imperial Guard army just for the rules to change (it happens about once a year). The lore is quite good (except for certain Space Marine chapters) and the video games aren't bad either. If you're looking for a good tabletop, look at Malifaux or Dystopian Wars.
Glad to know someone else here plays DW. I opened a topic about it a few months back, but the lack of replies led me to believe I was alone.
I actually started playing DW because of 40k (similar system and whatnot), but it's a lot less expensive and it's more consistent. I feel bad for my older brother though. He used to play Squats...
Whats that? Squats? No such thing kid. Just a myth. Don't make me bring in the Commissar.

Warhammer 40k is every strategy game, Sci-fi, and fantasy trope thrown together into a blender, which is then thrown into a larger blender adorned with skulls.

It started out as a tabletop wargame (and is still played today) but has escalated into a series of books and games. It's atmosphere is incredibly dark and depressing and it focuses on brutal combat and massive scale.

It is the death of your wallet, that's what it is!

And on a side note, it is a sci-fi grim-dark trope generator filled with madmen and incomprehensible warcries and xenophobia. And yet I love it still... Cegorach only knows why...
Actually, thanks to the miracle of 3D printers, we need only pay a one time fee of 1500 USD and BAM! infinite free miniatures!

Fuck you Games Workshop, this is what you get for letting Matt Ward fuck up the Necrons.
They used to be actually kinda SCARY y'know. Now they're just a bunch of wannabe body-snatchers who also want to collect all the Space-Cthulhu-Pokemon.

You mean slow paced, clumsy, boring as hell, with no awesome special effects, and with some jackass who always wastes your time by rules-lawyering you?

Tabletops are much more immersive and allow for a greater degree of control since you're directly in control and you don't have to worry about buggy AI.

Or you could, y'know, play online against other people.

Sure, the baneblade explosion thing may or may not require a mod or two, but if you at least want to see it EXPLODE you can just select it and hit the "delete" key.

Stop trying to justify your dinosaur game, EMBRACE TECHNOLOGY! But don't try to invent anything or be innovative about it, that would be TECH HERESY.

In defense of Matt Ward (I don't like writing that), the current fluff about Necrons (apart from teaming up with BA) is just bad.

The stuff it retconned, where all of a sudden there were this uber-powerful things about to eat teh galaxy that had always been there that loads of important people had always known about but hadn't been arsed to do anything about...that was bullshit.

Maybe if it had been introduced at the beginning, but it wasn't. And about that point was when GW's solution to everything became "fuck the story, rev up the GRIMDARK".

If you don't want to play the game (either because it is too expensive of you have no friends) the lore is still insanely interesting. Read the books. DO IT. DO IT NOW!!ONE!1

It is awesome. There is much death to be had, and jokes to be made about such deaths. It is also prohibitively expensive which is why I will never play the tabletop, and I just bought ten packs of magic today and plan on buying more tomorrow. I suggest you simply read the fluff and play the absolutely wonderful series of tabletop RPGs based off of it.

Sir, you must be just fucking around with me. I have read quite a good deal of 40k lore in my day, and there is no such thing.

If you do intend on playing table top, skip the full army battles and focus on the spinoffs. Kill Team, Dark Heresy and Death Watch are all really cool.

Its essentially playing soliders but they cost a lot of money.

Also, lots of lore, here's the lore in a very general minute.

Warhammer 40k is many things. The tabletop game is very fun, but you need a lot of spare income to get a properly large army for it very quickly (otherwise you have to rely on christmas and birthday presents). The lore is hilariously over-the-top awesome. It has some great books based on it, like Eisenhorn.

Go give it a try.

It's fun. People without an income think it's expensive.

I think that's everything important.

I'm telling you people, they exist! They were little men who ran around being all little and stuff! They more metal hats and talked funny! Why does no one believe me about the little men for outer space...
