I was thinking about th tiny thing that made a unoriginal game different from the rest.

My favourite is the weapon upgrade system from rachet and clank which makes an okay platformer into a brilliant platformer/shooter

My least favourite is the werehog sections of sonic unleashed, I proudly say that I enjoyed the sonic levels as they were fast and fun, but all that fun is drowned in a sea of button mashing.

As I rarely stray out of the land of sony I was wondering how other games keep it fresh

Whoa there, what about the first one? No upgrade system there. Mine would have to be the face customisation in Mass Effect. It's funny watching your bizzare faced freak having a serious conversation.

Probably least favourite is the robbery system in saints row. A wee bit fun but the safes are frustrating and the end result really not worth it (only $500 for something fairly difficult).
Best is the ransom system from the same game. Steal a car with a passenger, drive them around until they pay up. You can't slow down or they jump out and cops come at you. Me and a friend had a great chase where we leapt a bridge (awesome).

Least Favorite: [i/]It's Creative[/i]

I don't care if a game is creative, I want it to be good, very rarely do I find these cross paths.

Favorite: The hacking system in Bioshock.

Least Favorite:Alone in the Dark's Skip System. Yes, one of the games main features is that you don't have to play most of it.
I must agree on you with this part.

my least fav. gimmick (and now fad) is motion sensing. the wii is a console based on said cool trick. and now all the other systems are tringy to cash in on this fad. it needs to go away. its cool for arcade games where it can sense motion to dodge a bullet or something but to FORCE every game to have motion sensing is stupid. if i want to work out ill go do PT. but when i play games i dont want to flail about.

Not all games are going to involve the motion control, and Natal probably won't come out for years to come.

Least favorite: Quick time events. I don't care if they're not considered gimmicks. They're unneeded in most situations and are always frustrating to me.

Favorite: I rather liked Mirror's Edge first-person platformerness. It may need a little work to finish getting rid of kinks, but it's still nice.

Least Favorite: The touch screen on the Nintendo DS in Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars. Feels very forced and using the Dpad would've been a lot faster if they'd given you the option.

Most Favorite: New Game + (any game it's available). I always found it rather silly in games based on progressive character building that you'd put all this work in to improving your characters, beat the final boss and then realise after all that effort you're probably going to have to start from scratch if you want to enjoy the game any further. I especially get miffed when games have multiple endings and do not have this awesome feature.

i guess your right on that.
but if this motion sensing thing does catch on i want it to be optional. i know for some games this wont work but i liked it in medal of honor airborne where you could choose to use teh 6axis or use the buttons. i just dont want my controler to go away.

My favorite gimmicks are: multiple styles and weapons in DMC games and the upgrade system in R&C games. But, I'm not the biggest fan of: the Devil Bringer (or the whipped idiot attached to it) from DMC4 and recovering health.

Hate: Mini-games. E.g. Is there a point to raising my Speech skill when I have to do annoying mini-game just to get the benefit? (Oblivion) A few other similar examples in other games too.

Like: The card game from FFVIII. Not sure if that really counts, but I found it more addictive than the actual game...

Hate: Item crafting in NWN2. Never really seemed worth it to me, there were plenty of good items to buy or find, and the crafting was awkward and not worth the skill points.

Like: The Ally system in C&C:Red Alert 2. Made a nice change from always going it alone.

Hate: Jumping/platformer sections in FPS games (HL Xen levels)
