Either G Gundam or Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. I say Brotherhood because the ending of the original series was soooo Bad.

If it counts, Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust, most epic shit you've ever seen! I would otherwise have gone for Dragon Ball Z, if they would have stopped after he became Super Saiyan, after that things just got silly... Even for DBZ.
I said the SAME THING! Goku would of fullfilled Vegtas prophecy of a super sayain whos rage ended up killing him...tho it would of been his kindness lol.

Hellsing Ultimate is BRTUUUUALLL ftw.
Hehe^^ And how could I haave forgotten about Helsing? When I think about it, there's alot of animes I like, not all may agree with me but anyway, I'm also a fan of Black Lagoon and Fullmetal Alchemist :p

After I stopped watching DBZ I started getting into darker animes ._.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni would be my personal favourite.

...although the best I've seen would be Baccano!

Actually I should clarify. TMOHS has been my favorite anime pretty much since I've seen it but I watched Clannad on recommendation from about a billion people and it was the most emotionally powerful, moving piece of work I've ever seen in my life. That is, right up until the last episode shat all over everything with the worst ending in existence [sub]if you don't count Lost[/sub].
Except for the fact that Clannad's ending ties perfectly into the series main themes of change and family, is well explained and shows growth and development of each of the main characters, such as Nagisa and Tomoya putting their reservations of the future and past behind them so they can move on, symbolically and literally.

It's the best end a series like Clannad could have hoped for.
I have had all that explained to me very well.
The 7 page long explanation of the ending I read actually was very clear as to why it made perfect sense that it would end that way.

My point remained unaffected though. Clannad was a tragedy (Don't say it wasn't) The last episode was the series changing it's mind at the last second. Retconing the last 5 years of Tomoya's life away changed the series as a whole from a show about Tomoya's major flaw, his self-destructive disposition to forming unsustainable attachments, was ultimately his undoing, (this was also driven home by the "In Another World" episodes that showed that he would have been much happier in the long run if he had fallen for one of the girls who was more physically and emotionally stable.) To this big feeling of "Wow he actually learned nothing from that"

I've had this conversation before and it went on for a long time.
I think the best analogy I came up with was imagine what it would be like if there was an extra scene at the end of Romeo and Juliet where they had a completely out of left field time reversal back into an alternate history where Romeo received Juliet's letter on time and the plan went off with out a hitch and they lived happily ever after. That wouldn't be better, that wouldn't even be good. Some thing are better if they're tragic and Clannad is one of them.

Digimon (seasons one and two) and Dragonball Z kicked so much ass that every ass cheek for miles would twinkle in the sunlight because of all the shoe polish on them.

Yu Yu Hakasho was pretty cool too.

I admittedly watch very little anime.

Absolutely loved Cowboy Bebop though, and Black Lagoon wasn't bad.

Kinda wish I had more familiarity with the subject, since I could see myself really getting into anime. Just seems kinda daunting to get into without any prior knowledge, especially considering some of the DVD prices (Black Lagoon for example is, in my opinion, absurdly expensive on Amazon if you want the complete seasons).
Try Ghost in the Shell SAC 1, you'll probably like it. SAC 2 kinda lost me with the "cartoony-ness" - they took realistic weight and performance out - but it did have some good stories and excellent artwork.

Code Geass.

Watching it made me feel smart XD Also, I'm attracted to subjectively evil people. Great story, I love CLAMP's style, and well Lelouch's VA is Johnny Yong Bosch.

It's a story about the importance of family and about moving on. It isn't a tragedy. If it was a tragedy then Okazaki wouldn't have gone about redeeming himself in the last five episodes, as a tragedy is a story that shows a fall from grace due to the actions of the protagonist, who is usually of high status. If anything, Clannad is a story about redemption, not tragedy.

this was also driven home by the "In Another World" episodes that showed that he would have been much happier in the long run if he had fallen for one of the girls who was more physically and emotionally stable.)
Except that isn't the purpose of the Another World OVA stories at all. The Another World stories are adaptations of arcs from the Visual Novel where the romancing of the girl in the arc is important to plot of the arc and therefore wouldn't fit into Nagisa's arc (unlike Kotomi's and Fuko's, where romance doesn't play a major part and isn't a factor in the progression of the arc and thus can be included in the main story while retaining Nagisa's role as the main heroine). It also further shows us the existence of multiple worlds and the collection of the orbs of light, which are both important plot devices in both the visual novel and the anime.

Clannad never set up to be a tragedy, it lacks all the typical archetypes of a tragedy. It is clearly a redemption story, our protagonist starts off as a delinquent and the story is about him rebuilding his life and learning the importance of love, family, friendship and change. It is not a tragedy, not at all.

Of all time? Black Lagoon. Because of shit like this:
<youtube=ZTQSBm5A_FI>
Revy is badass incarnate. She could scare a Space Marine.
And that shows both why Black Lagoon is a cutting-edge, adults-only anime, and why the dubbing industry seriously needs better casting. Those voices are omg terrible compared to the originals :(

You think Black Lagoon has terrible dubbing? I think it's fantastic, though I will be honest in saying that I've only sat through Black Lagoon, Ghost in the Shell, and Grenadier. I've seen a worse job of dubbing before.

Either Hunter X Hunter or Full Metal Alchemist, I'll be surprised if I can find anything new that can top these two.

Also, I love some of the quick fight scenes in Naruto, I believe it deserves some love (not Shippuden though).

Spice and Wolf for serieses, and Battle Angel Alita for movies.
But it is a very, very close tie between it and Akira, Ghost in the Shell, really.

Probably a four way tie between:
Neon Genesis Evangelion: for emotional impact
Gurren Lagann: out of sheer manliness
Angel Beats: for tear jerker effect
Code Geass: possibly the most well rounded anime in terms of production ( though both seasons of FMA could also take this spot)

Favorite anime ever is probably a tie between Gantz and Elfen Lied. I know the second is a fanboy favorite, which was the reason why I neglected it for so long. One day, I finally decided to watch both and they both did the exact same things to me.

They incorporated nudity and sexual content into a Japanese Animation that appeared more artful than lustful in my eyes, they both kept me immersed in the story and yelling at the screen, and they both ended so wonderfully abrupt that I couldn't decide between bloody murder of anything with a pulse, crying my eyes out of my skull, or just applauding and exclaiming,"Well played, my horribly twisted friends. Well played, indeed."

I'm going to go with Clannad and Clannad After Story. I went in expecting a normal slice of life anime. I ended up with something so much greater.
