Number one spot is Little Lord Fauntleroy (1980) whenever kids are present. It's got Captain Picard and is a sweet, sweet thing if you don't fall for the 16:9 crap and can manage to find a proper 4:3 version. There have been quite some remakes of this one, but they are all crap and abysmal.

With youth and friends around, National Lampoons Christmas Vacation still works like a charm.

Scrooged (splendid performance by Bill Murray) and the iconic Die Hard with fellow movie aficionados who can tolerate the thought of not going for an all cheese pre-Christmas. On Christmas itself, we like not to turn on any electrical or electronical gadgetry.

It got to be Santa Claus: The Movie since I have seen that film so many times now.

Runner up are- Die Hard 1, Scrooged or The Muppet Christmas Carol.

'A Muppet's Christmas Carol' and 'The Wizard of Oz'.
The latter just always happened to be on tv when I was a kid so now I feel wierd if I don't watch it over Christmas. It's just tradition.

All the Bass and Rankin cartoons followed by Tiny Toons and Animaniacs Christmas specials, followed by Mickey's Christmas Carol, sadly admitted I love Care Bear's Nutcracker. The Grinch cartoon

As for actual films, Its a Wonderful Life and Scrooged, and the Christmas Carol with Alistair Sims

Also I forgot The Muppets Christmas Carol with Michael Caine, god its great. And the animated Nutcracker with Kiefer Sutherland and Meagan Follows = Awesome!!!

Both Groundhog Day and Scrooged because Bill Murray is awesome and if you don't shed a tear during his impassioned speech at the end of scrooged then please consult a mortician as you are quite obviously dead inside.
If you watch Groundhog Day on Christmas, what do you watch on Groundhog Day?

So, to answer the question. In my family, it's Muppet Christmas Carol. Michael Caine is amazing.

And also The Santa Clause, because it's surprisingly really good. Watching it as an adult, I realized how perfectly paced it is...Like, seriously. Few other movies I've seen can match it in terms of pacing.

Of course we also watch How the Grinch Stole Christmas and A Charlie Brown Christmas because you have to (usually as background noise while wrapping presents), and also A Christmas Story and It's a Wonderful Life but both have become kind of overplayed for us somehow.

I just saw Elf for the first time after being told by many people that they hate both Will Ferrell and Christmas comedy but just love Elf. It was exactly what I'd expected and I wasn't impressed. Sorry.

OH, Hogfather. I forgot about that. Death's speech at the end about how humans need fantasy to be human is so brilliant, and it fills me with joy every time. It's kind of too long to watch most years, though.
Holy crap I agree with everything on your list, I had forgotten that I watch all of these every year with my family. The muppet christmas carol isn't so much a movie we watch as it is a staple, like the christmas tree or christmas dinner. While some years I may not watch some of these movies, We always watch the muppets. Michael Caine is fantasic as Scrooge, I still laugh at Gonzo and Rizzo... whoops I mean Charles Dickens and Rizzo. And props to Jim Henson productions for giving us a seriously creepy ghost of christmas future, he still sends shivers up my spine (He has no face... It is a movie for kids BUT HE HAS NO FACE!)

As for groundhog day I can't really explain that one... We don't celebrate groundhog day in Ireland so I guess it just got lumped into christmas movies by virtue of the film being wintery... and funny as hell.

Bernard and the Genie. When I was a kid it was tradition to watch it while we put up the tree. If we had it on DVD we probably still would. It's such an under-rated film though. No-one I know has even heard of it.

It's true, Groundhog Day really is a great movie. And more than that...Did you know that a lot of Buddhists use it as an example to explain what they believe? I thought that was pretty cool.

Also, I always had to run out of the room for the Ghost of Christmas Future scenes. I still get creeped out by it. I think it's his long arms that really push it over the line for me. He's like proto-Slender Man.

And I don't know what I'm talking about anymore since I just woke up, so I'll stop here.

I don't really have one. I mean I always end up watching Christmas Story, if only because it's on all day. But if I were to start a tradition, I'd pick Scrooged and Love Actually.

My favorite movie to watch around this time of year is The Ref. It has to be my favorite twisted Christmas movie and this reminds me that I really need to track down another copy of it.

after typing that I found that the movie is uploaded in sections on youtube. here's part 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=th9YhAva0Ss
