I'm waiting for Skyrim to come out before I start making any judgements. But currently it's Portal 2 if only because it's the only 2011 game I've played so far I enjoyed.

Portal 2 and Dragon Age 2 are my current top contenders. It's likely going to stay that way for the year now since Mass Effect 3 was pushed into 2012 and I have no interest in Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3, Deus Ex, Arkham City or Skyrim.

Skyrim. Trololol.
Seriously though, that, Portal 2 and I have yet to play Catherine, then there is Dark Souls.

I'd humour the Diablo 3 idea but I don't have that much faith in a 2011 release.

Bastion also deserves mention.

I understand the purpose of the thread, but it's impossible to think rationally about GOTY given the massive potential of this year's particularly dense fall/holiday release schedule.

I think it'll be pretty hard to top Skyrim. I also think Dark Souls totally fucking will.

Edit: to clarify, Skyrim, Saints Row: The Third, Gears of War 3, Battlefield 3, Batman: Arkham City, Bioshock: Infinite, Deus Ex: HR, Dark Souls, Rage, Resistance 3, Uncharted 3... it's pretty fucking silly how much money I'll be spending on video games this fall/winter. And yes, it's pretty severe sequelitis, but these aren't exactly Madden/CoD-level abuses; these are all games from quality devs who work hard to deliver polished and entertaining products.

I really hope Skyrim doesn't disappoint, I'm sure it won't but there would be a lot of unhappy gamers if it ended up like DA2.

I don't have a favorite this year, nothing has me super excited yet either, maybe I'm just jaded but I believe the games industry has plateaued a bit in the last 18 months or so, we are all waiting for the next golden era.

I must say I was really into LA Noire. But I am really looking forward to Arkham City as well. And I also enjoyed DA2.

Of the games that are out now it's definitely Portal 2. By the end of the year I think Skyrim and Assassin's Creed Revelations could be serious contenders. Especially Skyrim.

At the moment it's L.A. Noire, but I'm confident that will change once I get Gears of War 3 and Batman: Arkham City. :)

Well, there are a lot of games to come at the end of the year and until then I can't really decide.
Yet, due to popularity I guess it will most likely be Skyrim, but Batman or Deus Ex could be good candidates, too.

edit: but if I could choose right now it would be 'Cthulhu Saves the World' or 'Bastion' - didn't have that much fun with any other game this year :D

And no one on the "not out yet" bandwagon mentions Uncharted 3?

So far this year I'm not sure. It's been a bit bland and the more unique games weren't good enough to warrant GOTY. Portal 2 probably so far.

some one should explain to me this game of the year thing.

does it go on reviews or units sold. is there more than one game of the year award there always feels like there is. I don't get it. or is it like the oscars, if so whos on that panel. why do open worlds seem to always have game of the year on the cover. and when did borderlands win a game of the year thing. do indie games count, I've never seen one displaying such an award, wouldn't they do that they obviously would like the money.

Hmm probably portal 2(skyrim/Deus ex isn't out yet) since it was fun all around, even if I got an hefty headache around chapter 5 and 6.

I haven't even played it yet and I know it'll be Skyrim. Know why? Cause I'm a bit of a Bethesda fanboy... hey at least I'm honest with myself!

Its been a very dry year for me, and Ive spent it catching up on games from yesteryear that I never got round to playing.

however this q3/q4 is looking very promising, with at least 3 games that look fantastic (just no Skyrim, Im already sick of hearing about it).
