There is no single gamer archetype. There are the despairing ignorant sadists (the Call of Duty kiddie), the indie hipsters, the hedonists who want to experience everything, the apocalyptic saving the world through games, the casual time-wasters. Games are a plastic medium where wizards (programmers) create "worlds" from "nothing". They are perhaps the ultimate postmodern artform, well suited for a world where bad people who think they are good people are so eager to "build a better world", at the mere cost of anyone who stands in the way and at the expense of improving traditional reality.

To me, a gamer is someone whose hobby is gaming and plays them on a regular basis. Simple as that.

" That's not to say I've never gotten into heated arguments where I lost my cool before. Just that the first thing that tends to come to mind when I hear the word "gamer" is the people who flipped their shit over the pre-release images of New!Dante, or the people who claim that Call of Duty or World of Warcraft are killing the industry, or the people who spitefully throw bile at EA regardless of whatever the news actually is, or the people who elevate simple threads into massive flame wars because PCs are obviously objectively better than consoles and anyone who thinks otherwise is just too stupid to build a PC, or because of the endless aforementioned 'reasons' " -ShrekFan247,2013

Couldn't have put it better, bravo.

Gamer is such a wide term that it's not really worth defining outside "person playing games".

I play basketball, but I'm not really basketball player becouse when we say "basketball player" we usually mean person that plays basketball for his livelyhood or at very least on some cometitive level. No such defining term is applied to etr gamer or "game player" yet, so it's kind of pointless.

Same as required to be a film buff for movies or a hunter for... err, hunting. You have to participate, have passion for and return to it with at least some degree of regularity (Hard to call yourself a film buff now if the last movie you saw was 5 years ago? I think the same would apply to gamers).
Note, that this says nothing about what types of games, how much is paid, how much time is spent every day, how involved in the communities or anything else. To be a game you just have to play games, have passion for it and participate every once in a while. In that regard, I think the classification is no different then any other hobby.
Well, film buff would be more aking to hardcore gamer or pro gamer as we use term now. Film viewer is more akin to gamer. And amost everyone is film viewer.

Any of the following:

Leveled a character to 50 (pre-Kunark) or 60 (post-Kunark) in EQ 1, at latest during the SoV period of EQ1.

Beat Demon's Souls NG. NG+ is a bonus.

Beat Dark Souls NG. NG+ is a bonus.

Completed at least 5 Bioware RPGs.

Completed at lesat 3 Mario titles prior to Super Mario Galaxy 1.

Completed Tobal No. 1 Infinite Dungeon (qualifies you for Uber-Gamer Status).

Completed Battletoads (also qualifies for Uber-Gamer Status).

Played Dragon Crown for something other than "BOOBS!"

Compared actual Dragon Crown playing time to ACTUAL Golden Axe playing time.

Completed at least 5 game's worth of achievements at 100%.

Completed "Through the Fire and Flames" on Expert on GH3 (just because I like this one and decided it should be so).

How to become a gamer in three easy steps:

1. Play a game of any kind.
2. Self-identify as a gamer.
3. Defend yourself from endless accusations that you're not a REAL gamer because of reasons.

For me, gamer means someone who is actively interested in my hobby themselves. No direct personality pops into mind but usually it leans more towards "fun spirited" considering that games are meant to be fun. Now, if you then tell me you almost exclusively play CoD AND other FPS's, it shifts - just as it would shift if you told me all you play is RTS's. However, both of those tend to shift to a similar area. That is, to a place where you don't really have a focus on games so much as you have a cubby hole you stay in and explore 1 game type. This can be a hindrance on me as I don't care for FPS's or RTS's so if that is your cubby game type, we have little to discuss. I see your gaming habits are competitive in nature and mine aren't so while I enjoy competitive games from time to time, you pretty much get your "fun spirit" from being competitive. No problem, to each his own.

Now, suppose I find out you play mostly city/empire builders or simulators I don't see you as competitive, I see you as constructive. I do have a strong link to those types of games myself. I have plenty to talk about with you once we have found a game we have both played and probably liked.

This goes on for many genres. Each tell me something different about you. Most often I find out that people are interested in a large sample of a few genres. Like RPGs, Action Adventure, and FPS's. Perhaps Racing, FPS's, and Fighting Games. While they are always disappointed to hear I don't care much for FPS's we bond over the other genres and the few FPS's I actually enjoy sparingly. Everyone loves them some FPS's and I let people down a lot on that one. FPS's, Fighters, and Puzzles just arent for me. I don't mind puzzles if in an adventure game or something but like Tetris? Zuma? Even Plants vs. Zombies? Yeah - I'll pass.

SO for me, being a gamer just means you are fun spirited and not as dull as people who (IMO) just want to sit around and stare at other people do stuff (TV).I am happy to sit my butt down and break out the Monopoly board with others over going to sit in a movie theatre and watch the same tropes get told to me in a different way. There are movies I love, but I would rather spend my time interacting with my entertainment and I assume others are the same way. It means you want to be involved which to me means you want to be part of the fun.

As for the whole "play a game, you are a gamer" thing, I wouldn't call someone who plays Solitaire a gamer. That isn't me being a douchebag elitist, that is just me requiring your lifestyle actually involves gaming, not a game. Old ladies who go play Bingo on Friday night aren't "gamers", they play a game. If all you play is CoD, you aren't a gamer, you happen to play a game. A gamer has gaming (at least a genre) as a part of their lifestyle. You play a lot of card games? I see you as a gamer. You play board games? Gamer. You played a game one time in your life? Sorry, but you don't qualify, the bar is low enough as it is.
