A lot of people call themselves gamers, but what does it take to earn that title? Or does it need earning at all? Are casual gamers such the disgusting race that people claim they are? Does being a Gamer require an amount of experience, number of games played, devotion to games... I'm curious, what do you think it takes to be a "Gamer?"

Someone who immerses themselves in the videogame culture....I don't really care, I'm just making something for my happy 1000th post.

Somebody who plays games. That is all.
This. However I don't like the term and never refer to myself as a "gamer" because I don't define myself by my hobbies.

I would think that there would be some sort of passion involved, but I also agree that the term "gamer" is a very misused term in the mainstream media.

Someone who takes an interest in the games they play. And who has some idea of the consoles they happen to be using.

Not those, sit down and play for two minutes types. That when you ask, "oh wow, you play games. What console do you have?" answer "ohhh I have a Playstationbox or something".

There are obviously people who take it ten times more seriously, but if you play games, then you can be called a gamer. Not as if it really matters though, and people who get angry over it are wasting valuable anger.

If you play a game on a semi-regular basis then i'd say you're a gamer. The thing is, I think everyone is a casual gamer unless they truly believe that they have to be the best of the best of the best. People who spend all day playing TF2 or Halo3 in some sad attempt to get all the badges and prove how hardcore they are are not gamers to me, but are more like the scum of the universe. It's the same for tabletop gaming. I see people who only play warhammer to win tournaments and show how good they are at being the cheesiest of the cheese, and it's silly because it's a fucking game.

See, I agree with that as well. I play games whenever I can, and I enjoy them. Do I refer to myself as a "gamer?" Not really. But what upsets me are the people who use the term as some sort of achievement to lord over other people. That's fine if you're "hardcore," but I think it's unecessary to be an elitist about it. I do agree that using terms and stereotypes that way is also unecessary. But I personally have caught my share of flak for being either a "casual gamer" or a poser, etc. I don't claim to be a "gamer," so I just find it juvenile for people to feel the need to demean the fact that I'm not overly addicted to my gaming hobby.
