Are video games art seems to be a big question here, I want to know what definition of art people are using when they say this or that is art. I looked at the definition at http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/art and according to some of them anything that is man-made or ARTificial is art. The best way of deciding if something is art for me is anything that only services the propose of being pretty, which would remove games from the category as they are used to tell stories and teach morals.

To each their own.. Oi. You speak for yourself. Just like everyone else does. I see art in games, don't care what others see.

If we went by your definition, we couldn't call books and movies art anymore either, as they do the same thing.

I see art as anything that evokes strong emotions. By that definition, to me, games are more of an art than paintings ever will be, but that's just cuz I don't get paintings.

Don't forget music, one of the greatest and oldest art forms out there.

True, that one must have slipped my mind.

Firstly I don't know why it's so important that snobby bastards don't scoff down on you from their self placed mantels, allowing you to call your hobby an art, but I digress. I personally think of art as anything created by man that moves you without you really knowing why.

On that note, there are few to no games I see as "art". Sure, there are pretty games, there are really fun games, but besides a handful maybe (Tetris?) I don't see any as art...

Edit: That said, I could see games very easily becoming a great way to make art, I just haven't seen much of it yet.

I believe art is something that we have to interpret somehow. Most video games don't fall into the category of art because they don't give us a profound sense of something.

Hmm... I am going to have to think on this a bit...

I guess my definition is anything that is created to produce emotion or reflection in the person experiencing it, but that still does not feel quite right to me as a definition. Oh well, I will go with that.

Video games can be art as an interactive experience rather than a playable action movie e.g. flower, okami and ii would consider half life 1/2 art in its own way.

Art is a product or process that influences and affects one or more of the senses, emotions, and intellect, be they stories, music, movies or paintings.

Video games encompass stories (plot), music(soundtrack), movies(cutscenes) and paintings (graphics). If there was ever a game that made you laugh or cry or get angry (by something other than 'Damn this crash/bug'), it's art.

1.
the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.

I like that definition.
This one.

Or none.

I don't like defining things that are incredibly "fluid".

I'm aware of that fact thats why I use the word entertainment is most cases. I could use other definitions but those either alway everything to be art or are subjective, so I use this one by default.

I'm going to give you an oppurtunity to refine your definition, as of now, killing someone's grandma falls under the category of doing art under your definition.

"An opinion that expresses personal, often emotional attachment, involvement, or commentary about any given subject. Being an opinion, it is entirely subjective in nature."

That's my take. Love it or hate it.

Nice hyperbole. Emotion is the only link I can see between games, movies, books, paintings, dance(another art form I just don't get), and all the other stuff our society calls art. But fine, I'll play your game and refine my definition.
Anything created to convey emotion. Happy now, I made it a thing, not an act.
Edit, i already called it a thing, so the act of killing a grandmother wouldn't fit into my definition. Your premise is rejected.
