I'm not that good at fighting games, but I love them all! My most favourite 2D fighter is King of fighters '99! Also most well-known SNK fighters like Samurai Shodown 4, Last Blade, Garou. Capcom, Arc System Works and Netherrealms' fighters are not bad either.

For 3D, it's Tekken, Bushido Blade 2 and some Western sport fighting games like Fight night or UFC undisputed.
I love KoF 99. Back when King was an absolute Goddess.
YES!! Oh gosh, you read my mind! I was gonna put it there!
She has so many moves in '99, both close-up and range attack, and her super moves were a joy to watch!

She's my favourite character in KOF!! I'm glad they brought her back in KOF13.

I used to like Soul Calibur, but it's too easy for noobs to button-mash you to death. I prefer Mortal Kombat / Injustice now.

My cousin says he loves the Mortal Kombat, Tekken, and PASBR (Playstation All Stars Battle Royal) franchises. Mortal Kombat for the beautifully presented story in the single player, lovable characters, and its bloody Kombat. Tekken for its amazing free flowing combat, characters, and attention to detail. and PASBR for it's kick ass roster, fast paced gameplay, and mostly Sir daniel Fortesgue.

My favorite fighter of all time is still VF4 Evo for PS2. Mostly because it has by far the most robust offline single-player mode I've ever played in a fighting game, and that's pretty critical when you're a) way more interested/skilled than any of your immediate gaming friends, and b) not interested/skilled enough to play competitively online. It's a terrible middle ground that pretty much ruins the genre for me.

Tekken 3. The first fighting game I every played properly and mastered a character. I spent hours playing that game. The engine is classic Tekken so it's an easy game to pick up and play, which is always good when playing with friends. Plus some of the stories were bat-shit insane which made it all the more amusing.

While its definitely true you can win if your fundamentals are strong enough the whole point of combos is that it increases your chance of winning because of the fewer good reads you need thus reducing your risk obviously on the extreme side if you know a 100% combo you only technically have to get in once as long as you are able to execute it proficiently to finish your opponent whereas if you are doing single hits you would need multiple good reads.
Of course combos are useful. Doing more damage, gaining more meter, carrying your opponent further towards the corner and possibly getting a setup afterwards are all great incentives for knowing at the very least some basic bread 'n butter-combos at some point. I just don't think they're the first thing anyone should focus on as a new player. You need to get your spacing, movement and neutral game down before you'll even be in a position to land combos.
When I started out playing fighters about a year ago, I made that very mistake. I used a lot of energy on trying to learn combos in SF4(which has a horribly beginner-unfriendly combo system too), and got really frustrated that I had no chance of landing them in a real match because my opponents would either jump like an idiot(and let me kill him with anti-airs alone :V) or press some kind of normal whenever I tried walking up to him. Once I started figuring out that the best way to open someone up was to use normals to stop people from jumping and sweeping randomly, as well as just walking up and throwing people when they got too scared of pushing buttons, things got way easier, and I actually got possibilities to land some simple combos.

That's why I said that combos essentially is a non-element before you have your basic fundamentals down. That changes when you get to the point where you have a chance to land those combos, but you usually have a lot of work to do before you'll even be able to do that.

The Wykydtron said:
"Mitsuru starts the game at level 18 because she's Lee Sin, the Blind Monk. She excels at everything"

All her normals have crazy range and come out fast, her Persona takes care of full screen away opponents and her charge is safe for the most part and it moves her more than half the screen. Did they ever look at her kit when designing her and say "hey, Mitsuru can do everything incredibly well, let's tone that down mmmk?"
Well, she does have a couple of subtle weaknesses, actually. She doesn't build meter very well, none of her attacks are faster than 7 frames so she's susceptible to close range pressure from most characters, and she isn't as good as the other top tiers at opening people up. The last point doesn't say very much, considering Yu and Chie have vortexes that would make Akuma and Cammy from SSF4 go cry in a corner, Aigis has her sick mobility and Teddie is basically a Smash Bros-characters on acid.

Of course, that doesn't really matter all that much. I usually describe Mitsuru as "3rd Strike Chun-Li with an aegis reflector", and that's basically what she is. Sick normals, great damage once she gets a hit in, and ending any combo with Bufudyne gives her a free high-low-mixup after taking 3500+ hp from you. She fits my playstyle really well, because I can just...

I only have real trouble with Kanji most of the time for some reason. I can sort of get by Mitsuru if i'm lucky. I loathe grapple characters in general. Thankfully Kanji has some easy to exploit weaknesses. They all like to mash the air grab... I crouch under it every single time. I get wrecked in the first round just to acclimatise to how decent the Kanji is then get into what I call *sigh* "Zoning Labrys" and win the next two with barely any health lost.

You literally sit the fuck down and spam her Persona moves to keep him away including traps. The upwards wheel thing 1. knocks him out of any air move and 2. if it misses Labrys is still crouching so you dodge the dreaded grab anyway. That wheel is also the opening for the combo that does almost half his health if you end it with a super. The medium standing Persona attack needs no explanation. It's fucking amazing in any situation :D

Then go in when he's real frustrated, go in with the sweep into overhead into super. I learned that stuff from Mu-12 already. People get pissed at Zoning and Keepaway so they get careless and stop blocking.

It takes time to whittle him down because all her combo pathways require you to be close and if he's in range for the grab that does half your health (you know the one) as far as i'm concerned you're doing it wrong. It's why I can't play Aigis so well vs him without maybe spamming the anti air cannon.

I HATE playing Labrys like that. She's supposed to just not give a fuck and run in... Nope, how to get yourself killed in seconds vs Kanji. :S
..well, kind of like that, actually, only I'm not actually zoning. I just make people respect my neutral game and think "ah crap, I can't attack this guy, I'll just eat dat sexeh rapier and take unnecessary damage", at which point I just run up and throw them to mindfuck them. At this point, most people are scared of both pushing buttons and of not pushing buttons, allowing me to rush them down, and blow them the hell up once they crack a second time.

You haven't lived until you see an Elisabeth melt while trying to pressure you with keepaway with one Beast super. Y'know when you come out of a combo and she's on the other side of the screen? Super. She will be firing the laser the second you pop back up. It carries you full screen away and just goes through all the shit her Persona lobs at you. It also instagibs her because it's both an axe attack and is therefore improved by her stacking damage and it's a counterhit for even more damage. It works against Yukiko as well but Maagidyne is more tricky to predict since it can tag you on the way out.

I wonder who wins if you used Aigis' charge super and Labrys' charge super and they collide with each other..
Heh, I remember the first time I played Persona. I managed to get two autocombos in, and suddenly I heard the announcer go U R WINNAR. Both me and my opponent were like "uh, what?", as we hadn't paid attention to the health bars, and neither of us were aware that Liz had that low of a starting HP. :V

That last scenario needs testing. Gogo training mode!

Btw, are you playing on XBL? In that case, want to take a round or two sometime? I can't boast being all that good, but that shouldn't be relevant :V

It's probably a toss-up between Soul Caliber on the Dreamcast or, Guilty Gear on the Xbox. I put in a ton of hours with both of them. In general though I'm not a big fan of one-on-one fighting games...though I am having fun with Injustice and I remember loving Power Stone but I think Power Stone is more like a 3D Smash Bros...

Right now, King Of Fighters XIII (pss, that means 13)

I like the team aspect of it, gives nice open combinations of characters, some are better at being your second or third, some are better at being starters, it's very interesting. The rolls, the hops, jumps, I like it. The character color pallets are nice as well, not as much customization as previous titles (where you could change the color of their projectiles even), but very nice none the less, some characters do get the short end though.

Favorite characters - trying to wheen off of Terry, or get better with them, neither is happening. Joe, because Joe is fun. Andy, because some how I'm actually kind of okay with him, which I only remember have trouble when I tried to play as him years ago in kof 99 and 2000, and 2001, Andy just wasn't for me, and now he is. Iori, because he's freaking Iori, flames or no flames. I like most of the characters though, just not any good with half of them.

I just wish there was one more team in there, of Whip, Mary, and Vanessa, would have loved that. I miss Mary, need her back.

Street Fighter IV is fun as well, or should I say, Super Street Fight IV Arcade Edition, I'm new to Street Fighter. Played some of SNK vs Capcom but otherwise not much experience with Street Fighter. It's very nice, but any time I play it I miss having a team of three, i feel lonely, need my imaginary friends.

Favorite character is Juri, cause she's a little out there, and she reminds me of Kim from KOF (whom I need to learn how to play at some point), and her move's are fun to hit people with, possibly because she laughs when I do so. Also like C. Viper because she's not too different from Terry from KOF. Keep trying to stray from Ryu, Ken, and all the other Hadoken groupies, they just don't feel different enough from each other to me yet - kind of like Ryo, Robert, and Takuma, Yuri is different because she's Yuri, and she hits people with her butt, and will grab the biggest badass around that she can find, and slap him in the face again and again. Also I miss her Yuri Punch. Back to Street Fighter, um, I like...Cammy I guess?

Makoto has Corona Uppercut. It's a legitimate reversal with invincibility, use that lol.

(also hurray, Aigis main here too, Labrys is my sub too, what are the odds lol, as for BB, you can see my main above!)
Oi, get it right. Labrys comes first, Aigis in a firm second and Naoto can come too if she promises not to throw out her instakill when she's losing badly for a lucky win.

I don't do that by the way...

[sub][sub]Anymore[/sub][/sub]

Tell me that's Bang you play not Aracunte... If there was such a thing as being worse than Tager it would be him.

Average Arakune player:

"LOL CURSE LOL! LOL! GET REKT! I AM SO GOOD AT THIS GAME! LOL CURSE LOL!"

...

*sigh*

Fuck off you slimy twat.
Lol, I know, what I meant to say was that we seem to main the other's sub and sub the other's main. My third would probably be Yukiko btw.

Oh and yeah, I'm Bang, you can hear the announcer list my name as the matches start. Also, you can see me beat up that Jin scrounel after the Arakune matches too. :D

Btw, Arakune won't be like that any more. In CP each bug consumes a chunk of the curse gauge so he has to very thoughtfully use the bugs or he won't get to do any combos at all, he can't just faceroll on the stick and expect to do damage. Tager on the other hand...got an air 360 and better combos and a lot of stuff...he's gonna be fun. XD

I'm really not into fighting games. Only ones I've owned are Tekken 3 and Soul Calibur IV. Actually had a bit of fun with the latter, before it got old, so I'd say Soul Calibur IV is my favorite.

Yup I play on XBL, name is the exact same as the one here (space and all) but with a 7 on the end. Some prick stole my reference... Friend me it'll be fun. I have four characters I go between so just shout to switch if you're getting hella rekt by Labrys, Aigis or Shabrys. :3

[sub][sub]Rookie's blatant over the top self-confidence must be rubbing off on me...[/sub][/sub]

Naoto is my absolute WORST by miles though. I played her again for the first time in ages and I was like "shit, were her normals always this good?"

My Aigis is literally how many possible ways can I hit confirm into my autocombo. Still finding new ones out baybeeeeee XD

I have a quarterish health Labrys combo but it's a bit delicate unless it's in the corner. My Shabrys took a nose dive after I played Labrys because god they are like polar opposites. All the usual Labrys combo pathways are locked because Ariadne is your best friend and she's replaced by some slow ass high damage bull who has no easy combos and exists as some bullshit ludicrous damage mix up machine.

I play BB too but I'm not even half as good. I just play full arsehole Zoning Mu-12 forever. As my dear friend once said to me when playing vs AI Mu-12

"Oh fuck, guns, fucking barrier gah guns again stop it FUCK. ORIGINS! YOU PLAY THIS?!"

"Yup"

"Y-you're a DICK!"

BlazBlue and Persona 4 Arena, I just love the way ArcSys handles their games. I would have said UMVC3 a few months ago but really, fuck that game. I know everything was broken from pretty much Day One but that was a funny, endearing kind of broken. Now it's just tragic. Infinites everywhere, the online community is still full of complete cockbandits (technical term) and the mechanics themselves have been broken completely.

I've discovered I VASTLY prefer single fighters instead of teams. Because y'know teams are just begging to be broken.

I play Labrys and Aigis in P4A now. I'm actually legitimately good with Labrys now (shut up I am. I have a high damage Labrys combo that ISN'T autocombo spam! It ends with a super too!) and my Aigis is getting better. I can be that Aigis who is just goes high, low, high, low, high, low, low, high in one unbroken chain until you fuck up your block changes. Because Orgia Mode is hilarious.

I like how pretty much every character is designed with crazy rushdown pressure in mind but the games makes it fair. It gives you ways out of it and getting cornerlocked until you die is your own fault because you can actually do something about it if you're half decent. Full game cornerlocks are still BlazBlue's thing. Everybody needs an Origins dammit.

I had to give up Shadow Labrys because you just try playing Labrys and Shadow Labrys at the same time. Try. Shabrys is still the coolest but she has to be the most technical in the game because of how her Shadow works.

I play Mu-12 in BB and barely anything else. I would play Makoto if she had any range at all, really I would. Give her ONE good ranged/get off me move (Space Counter doesn't count it's hard T_T) in Chrono Phantasma and i'm there. I play some Tsubaki on occasion literally because her music is so fucking awesome. She should be easy to pick up in theory but no... Just no :/
Same. Love Persona 4 and Blazblue but boy, do I suck at fighters.

As for characters, Yu Narukami in Persona because of Ease and Ragna because well DEAD SPIKE

Soulcalibur II. Something about stabbing people with weapons is just so much more satisfying than punching people.

That and a somewhat interesting story (for a fighting game, that's saying something), AWESOME MUSIC, great characters with decent movesets (Also Link), one of the most substantial single-player campaigns in the genre and great versus modes (team battle, specifically).

Blazblue is a close second.

Yeah, Chronophantasma looks to be fun. Everyone gets new moves and the overdrive changes the game quite a bit. Plus Terumi and Kagura look interesting.

Storywise, there is going to be 30 hours worth so as someone who wants to see what the hell is Kushinada's lynchpin and what Celica has to do with the plot, I'm happy?

Bushido Blade series.

Best sword fighting games in the universe (deal with it Soul Calibur)

No health bars.
No 200 hit combos.

Precise striking is needed. If you got slices in the head you were dead.

Stabbed through the chest? Dead.
Arm cut? Arm unusable for the rest of the round(making 2-handed sword users much slower)

Legs cut? Slower movement.

All it takes is on good strike. Any character could use any of the multiple weapons.

Best fighting game series of all time.

A close second is the Tekken series for just being all around more enjoyable to play than most other 3D fighters.

Close third is Soul Calibur 3 for being the last good Soul Calibur and the most balanced.

Close 4th is Power Stone for being one of the best arena fighters out.

5th is Tobal, which everyone should play.

Killer instinct 1 for the SNES and Arcade. Couldn't get enough of it. still play it on occasion, I'm psyched about the new KI, but a lot less excited that its a console exclusive since I'm a PC gamer and have been since about Unreal 1 showed up.
Couldn't look back - but now I will have to buy a xbox one for KI 3 and only that game ;_;. Also a wii u for SSB :/ hopefully new metroid games for that... anyway off topic.

Do wrestling games count? I like WWE games. Here Comes The Pain was probably one of the better ones in terms of mechanics thanks to fights beeing able to go from area to area. The "other" gender was awesome in that I could take my female wrestler into the endless story mode.
Generally they let you create a wrestler regardless of what installment of th WWE game you pick up.

I had a soft spot for DoA a while, but it felt like DoA 2 Hardcore started to let the AI Cheat a bit too much for my liking, which ended that as far as playing the game goes. I still like Helena as a character.
Tekken, bossfights aside *mutters about azazazel or however the hulking crystal bastard's name is spelt* is pretty nice in light of my falling out with DoA. I dunno if DoA stopped letting the AI block kicks with punch counters, and vice versa. If they did, it might be worth taking up again.

As much as I like some characters in Soul Calibur, like Tira, I didn't get along well with the series.

King of Fighters has always been a solid like for me in the 2d arena, and even in the 3d arena thanks to large casts of diverse people that are generally well designed. Most SNK fighters fit into that category, too, so I like SNK in general.

Bushido Blade definitely is worth a mention, and needs a new installment.

Ehrgeiz was pretty awesome. One part arena fighter, one part dungeon crawler, plus the ability to unlock Tifa from FF7 as well as Zack, Red XIII, sephiroth, and Cloud as combatants?

Darkstalkers is nice. I'll always be a Hsien Ko fan.

I know I'll prolly be lit on fire for saying this, but Evil Zone is a game I liked.

I liked Gundam Battle assault. Espcially 2. I always wantd to see Altron vs Dragon Gundam, and a few other matchups that the game made possible.

I can't do it, the dpad feels so weird. I tried downloading some fighters trial like Garou and the old SF but it was so awkward for me.
3D fighters are alright, but 2D is just so...
