I'm a pretty big film fan and I'm looking for something good from outside of the states. It's hard to find films within the states that aren't the big money blockbusters. I don't even care if what you recommend as a non-US film.

For a bit of reference, here are some films that I absolutely love from outside the states:
The Killer - John Woo
Bicycle Thieves - Vittorio De Sica
Run Lola Run - Tom Tykwer

EDIT: It takes looking for films and me actually deciding to go out on a limb and watch something i've never heard of. all the recommendations here are fantastic. thank you all! and keep them coming!

Well there's Red Cliff, Mad Max, the Monty Python films, The Twilight Samurai and Taegukgi: The Brotherhood of War.

There are probably more but those are off the top of my head.

EDIT: Wow, how could I forget the Lord of the Rings trilogy?

Flame and Citron. Great film from Denmark about a pair of anti-Nazi insurgents who operated in Denmark. Really cool.

Reign of Assassins. An awesome kung-fu movie set in ancient China.

Les rivières pourpres. A french murder mystery.

Both excellent and worth the watch.

After that, I wonder what you like about Red Cliffs... it was very... *meh* to me. *shrug* (comes with growing up with a Chinese history buff)

OT:

If you want Chinese nationalism that's actually both 'real' and not inflammatory, then Assembly (even though Ip Man is an enjoyable watch...)

Downfall, Stalingrad (both in German) are solid films (along with the DC of Das Boot, though I prefer the mini series thanks to being fleshed out and the extended Vigo sequence).

And there's Copenhagen, if you're into the history of physics...(!)

The thing is I'm a big Dynasty Warriors fan, and I liked to think of Red Cliff as "Dynasty Warriors: The Movie.

Don't worry, I am aware of the inaccuracies of Red Cliff and there were some scenes that felt completely unnecessary but in the end it was a fun and epic action romp.

As for The Twilight Samurai, I loved that film for completely different reasons.

In fact I don't really like this thread for that. :)

Let's just take one...
