Final Fantasy VII, I think. I must have beaten it 20-30 times over the course of my 22 years of life, the first 10-15 of which were nearly consecutive. In fact, I only just got tired of it a couple months ago when I started it up again, but frankly to have lasted this long is quite amazing. No other game has managed to bring me back to it as many times as FFVII.

Final Fantasy IX

Because it's as close as anyone will get to the perfect game.

Legend of Dragoon. First thing that came to mind. I love it more and more each time I play it. I own two copies in case one of them should ever become damaged / unplayable. The story, characters, gameplay. I just love it all.

Planescape: Torment because it was the best story telling experience I think I had in any medium...

However, besides that probalby either Deus Ex. (yes I liked the second one and still found it to be a great game even though the areas were smaller and other problems.)

Silent Hill 2 - the story is well told and emotionally jarring; excellent atmosphere - a good example of what horror should be; characters that are interesting and relatable; thought provoking puzzles; great easter eggs, which add to the game's replayability; and an excellent soundtrack. It has hit me like no other game has.

It impossible to choose just one game, but Id have to say the mass effect series specifically 2, but it barely surpases Kotor, half life, bioshock, world of warcraft, assassin's creed, fallout 3 and portal.

I love ME for the immersive and beautiful environments and writing, along with almost unmatched character development (Okay, maybe beat out by the persona series in that category) plus it has a fun combat system IMO :D.

Oblivion. I bought it over a year ago and completed it several times, but I'm still finding new quests to complete!

Fun fact: I've mentioned Planescape: Torment in all but one of my posts so far.

This one too! Leaving aside the characterisation and the setting, the 'Good' ending gave me the best sense of closure I've ever had at a story's conclusion.

By accepting his fate and taking responsibility for the first incarnation's crimes, TNO can put an end to the torments afflicting him, his companions, and the planes themselves. It's the best example of a cathartic, bittersweet ending I've ever *known*.

*Know* that I will continue gushing about this game until I meet someone IRL who loves it as much as I do. None of my friends have played it...they think it's boring...

Gush gush gush...

EDIT: Honourable mention goes to Warcraft III, for creating a good storyline with sympathetic characters, in an RTS of all things! Shame the MMO killed off all the interesting characters, but oh well.

Devil May Cry

There are so many reasons.

Its gameplay was so goddamn awesome it essentially invented the spectacle fighter genre of action games, and experiencing it in the very beginning, when there was nothing else like it on the market, was glorious.

The graphics, the art design, and the atmosphere were just plain fantastic. The environments were consistently dark, unsettling, and exceedingly well designed. The enemies were varied, intimidating, genuinely disturbing, and a challenge to fight. All of this, plus the soundtrack, made this one hell of a dark and oppressive environment, which is what made its protagonist all the more endearing.

Enter Dante. This wasn't some grimdark, cigarette-smoking, gravel-voiced brute with nothing on his mind but vengeance. No, this majestic man-god ventured forth into the darkest corner of the earth and faced its vicious abominations with a grin on his face and books of one-liners up his sleeves.

The contrast between this hero and this world just made this game for me.

Half Life 2 or Majora's Mask, the latter being mostly nostalgia being my first N64 game. By the way this thread officially always will have a place in my heart ;) haha

All time? That's a little hard. I don't think I can just pick one.

Diablo 2 is up there. It was probably the first game I really was addicted to, and probably the first game that made me realize there was something really great about PC gaming. I must have spent so many hours on D2... clogging up the phone line playing in B.net. It's still a great game and as fun as it ever has been.

Let's see, there's Star Fox 64 and Super Mario 64, which were probably my first two games (I was a bit of a late bloomer... circa 1997 was when I got my N64). I still adore Star Fox 64, even without my nostalgia goggles on, and Super Mario 64 is a classic. Those two games are the earliest memories I have of gaming, and I do love them both.

Ah, and there's Star Wars Galaxies. It was my first MMO, and man was I addicted. That was middle school right there: SWG. In its glory days, it was probably the single best sandbox MMO ever created, and despite the fact I've almost been playing MMOs every year of my life since SWG, I don't think I've ever found one that topped it.

And finally, there's Demons Souls... a game I am willing to gush endlessly about. I think the game is pretty well perfect in every way, and the closest games have ever gotten to being art. I could write a fucking thesis on this game... that's how much I love it (the sad thing is I am only half-joking heh). It's beyond brilliant, and easily one of the most incredible gaming experiences I've ever had.

So, there you have it: Star Fox 64, Super Mario 64, Diablo 2, Star Wars Galaxies, and Demons Souls. I refuse to pick just one.

Portal series. Great dialogue, fun great gameplay, cool story, and lots of memorable moments. I can't say the same for a lot of games.
