Abes Oddysee is definatley my choice... It was the first game I ever actually played and it was unlike any other game at the time. Also, Abe was a very likable character so I was partly drawn into the story-line, even though it wasnt exactly detailed and in-depth...

The Darkness. Everything about it, the story, the characters, the powers, the soundtrack, and quite possibly the best atmosphere in any game I've ever played.

Knights of the Old Republic.
Best story in the history of anything ever!!
I like how talking is as integral to gameplay as combat.
And The characters are all interesting and insightful.

Probably TimeSplitters: Future Perfect

It may have worse multiplayer than TS2, but unlike TS2, for me remains very accessible even today.
A funny shooter, made by some of the talent behind Goldeneye. Great multiplaer, tons of characters and interesting weapons...

Whenever people ask me to describe it I'm like "What other game lets you kill monkeys with bricks in a chinese restaraunt whilst playing as a snowman that walks by sitting on a magic carpet?".

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
I got into gaming relatively late (First console PS2), so I didn't really get to play many "Classics". From what little I remember Oblivion was the first console RPG that really hooked me and it's been peachy since then. I just keep coming back to it and I always manage to find something new. Overall I've just not put as many hours into any other game.

Agreed its a great game, too bad the multiplayer was no fun.

OT: I have to go with Metal Gear Solid 4. This game left me in shock after I beat it, plus it made me go through and play everything involved with Metal Gear Solid/Metal Gear. But this year may change that, with Zelda and Skyrim coming out.

Legend of Dragoon. It's an RPG where all your characters can turn into badass dragon warriors, the story was magnificent *spoilers* with Rose (the carrier of the team in the beginning) being revealed as trying to kill Dart and destroying his town in the beginning (essentially setting the game into motion). Interesting party members get killed off and you can recruit a recurring bad-guy into your team. Also the only game in which it indicated how close you were to an encounter (green-yellow-red indicators above your character),

The game is incredibly varied with character development. But the battle system is what takes the cake - each time you attack you can press a button at a specific time to build up an "addition" to your initial attack. Once you complete the combo, a special is unleashed that decimates the enemy. Your attacks can level up when used (like in the Disgaea games)(also why Rose is so OP in the early game) along with normal RPG elements of elemental attacks, stat building, and equipment management.

Lloyd - the games antagonist - has probably the second-most interesting character development and storyline (behind Sephiroth). And you eventually get his Dragoon spirit, which comes from the Divine Dragon (easily the most impressive boss fight for an RPG to date).

So yea, character deception, amazing visuals for the time, combos, Dragoon-form, character death, amazing antagonist, and varied world (granted little linear) and a gameplay experience that lasts MUCH longer than today's RPGs - I can would easily call this in my favorites.

Also you travel to the Moon.

Morrowind. Captivated me so damn much. It's dated now and I doubt I'd be able to enjoy it in the same capacity - but it's still number 1 for me. Probably. Maybe not. COD 4 was pretty amazing too.

Kingdom Hearts 2.
For me, it nails the main things a game needs to be good; It's fun and it looks good. Put that on top of with and against Disney, you get a damn awesome game in my books.
I'll admit everything it has probably isn't the best, especially in the story department, but I think it does a good job of covering all the bases and covering them well.

Main reason I pick Kingdom Hearts 2 over 1 is that the combat feels better. The other reason is that you get to play as butt-whoopin' Mickey Mouse if you balls up a boss fight.

EDIT:
Tweaked so I'm not praising the story so much. Looking back on it, I guess it's not all that great.

BioShock.

Fun, does "no cutscenes" better than some other game (you know the one I'm talking about), fantastic plot, great plot twist, and was one hell of an experience.

Vagrant Story on the PSone (God, i feel old.)

One of the best playable introductions of all time IMO, which nails a cinematic feel that i've not seen for a long time since. Interesting characters (practically NO-ONE in the game could be seen as good or bad, all shades of grey in this game.) A beautiful game world (Ivalice, also appearing in FF12.) and an interseting story of Labarynthian depths and dialogue that blew me away at the time.

loveitloveitloveit.

Persona 4. Great characters and interesting story. Thought it was perfect, but then again, Persona 4: The Golden is scheduled to come out.

Team Fortress 2.

WHAT?! The game is good. It's the most balanced multiplayer game I have ever played. It has a steep difficulty curve but once I reached a certain skill level, I was hooked.

The characters are cool, the weapons are crazy, and the humor is mixed into the gameplay perfectly.

Also, it holds the best weapon I have ever used in a game...

I don't really have a favorite, as time flies by I tend to slightly forget about how fun games were.

If I look back I'd say Mario Kart DS. During class, 8 player epic racing while trying not to get caught by the teacher(We were so ridiculously good at the game we needed additional difficulty).

Those were the days.

Hey man! I was just entering this thread to give my bog standard answer... And I was just asking myself as I clicked on the link, should I say Abe's Oddysee due to the extra originality, or Abe's Exoddus due to the superior content?

Well lo and behold, the OP has already beaten me to it! Although honestly I'm going to have to say Abe's Exoddus rather than Abe's Oddysee, simply because features like the quick-save removed a lot of the frustration (even if it could be abused a bit). Other than that, the sheer amount of extra content and puzzle elements was great; the ability to possess a wider variety of enemies as well as the expanded speech system being the biggest examples.
