I can see a lot of people probably wanting to lynch me for this, but Assassins Creed.
Yes, I know the games aren't perfect, but ever since I played 3D GTA games I really wished I could actually get up onto those buildings and climb around. Jumping from rooftop to rooftop. But no, all you get is the opportunity to awkwardly make your way up there using a helicopter or something, and then all you can do is kinda stand there...
Then AC came along and I could gracefully make my way accross the rooftops, stabbing guards and diving away. And whilst the story seems to have stagnated the gameplay always feels a little tighter each time around. Yeah some extra unnecessary shit sneaks its way in (a tower defence game? really?) but the combat and movement always seems to improve.
Ultimately, I just think the AC series is an absolute blast to play.
Another series I love (and on a weirdly similar theme) would be Hitman.
So many games tout that you have multiple paths to your goal, but I never felt I had as much choice in a game like Mass Effect or even Skyrim as I did in Blood Money.
Ultimately most games just give you a variety of ways to kill everyone between you and the exit (not that this is always a bad thing), but Hitman gave me the choice as to who to kill.
Yes, I have a target in a hotel room that has to die, but how? Do I disguise myself as one of his security team, walk right into the room and poison him? Do I wait in the room opposite, eliminate the current occupant and wait patiently with my sniper rifle and give him a bullet between the eyes? Or do I just calmly approach with my assault rifle and eliminate everyone in the building?
All are viable options, and I find myself playing missions over and over, just testing out the multiple paths, and seeing what the game will let me get away with.
Needless to say I am very excited about the upcoming game.
