I think I'll have to go with Gran Turismo 3. Yeah, I love some of the kart racing games like Mario Kart, MK64, MKDS, Crash Team Racing and what not, and there are more simulation based racers which have surpassed GT3 (even GT4 was far better in just about every objective sense, though GT5 was sadly a pile of poo).

But GT3 was the first racing sim styled game I ever really played and I not only loved it, I played it religiously for months. I even did many of the hours long endurance races because I was so into it. It was an incredible experience for me and one I'll always have a soft spot for.

Nostalgia-wise:
Jupiter's Masterdrive (Amiga 1990)
NFS 2 (1997)
Colin McRae Rally (PC 1998)

Favorite racing games now:
<color=purple>DiRT 3
Shift 2 Unleashed

Codemasters is the master.

Yes. You do need a racing wheel & pedals.

DiRT 2 was probably my favourite.

It had an amazing soundtrack, and the tribute to Colin Mcrae at the the end actually made me cry...

Without a doubt every Forza out at the moment :D
I've put a stupid amount of time into each game. They keep getting better and better. It gets scary addicting when you start racing with rewinds off, assists off, and do one or two hour races.

gran turismo series, g4 and 5, but old enough to remember and have owned gt on the ps1.

5 is the clincher for me since its got ferraris FINALLY. really hope they do 6 proper and either redo all the standard cars or at the very lest redo the physics on them so they are not ezy mode vs premium cars, some of them are stupid you can take turns so much faster than any similar premium car because they never redid the physics from scratch.

test drive unlimited was good fun, great cars, nice mix of arcade and sim, i played the heck out of that also for a good long while, owned every property and car you could.

rfactor had some really good stuff, just the graphics already seemed dated when the game came out. but some of the mods for the game were great, the porsche touring series especially was an epic mod. some of the formula one mods were amazing for that game also.

Crash team racing was godly. As was Need for speed: Underground 2. I also have a soft spot for NfS: Carbon as I love the Muscle cars in it.

Since pretty much every racing game ever has been said, Ill go with KartRider. It was actually a pretty solid kart racer and the fact it was free was pretty sweet.

This is the best way to play racing games. I play F1 2011 (and every F1 title ever released on the Playstation since 1996!) at 100% race distance, full damage and rules, no assists and no flashbacks/resets etc.

It's the only way to get the full experience that the developers had in mind, makes the racing far more tactical (especially over a full season) and the sense of achievement after winning a closely fought race over a full distance is equaled only by the crushing sense of defeat when you have an off late in a Grand Prix - like my penultimate lap crash at Monza the other day when I overcooked it into Lesmos 1 on worn tyres and managed to spin it into the inside Armco...

Kudos, my friend. A fellow Forza addict.

Forza 4, followed by Tokyo Xtream racer 2 for Dreamcast
I've recently started getting interested in the Tokyo Xtreme Racer series. A while back I got Tokyo Xtreme Racer: Drift 2 (or Kaido Racer 2 here in the UK) which is really fun and quirky, although it's pretty hard. The other day I also bought Import Tuner Chanllenge, which is basically Tokyo Xtreme Racer 4, on 360. I did notice it when it first came out but I thought it looked like crap, but since doing some research more recently I thought it looked pretty cool so I went for it.

Me too. People give Carbon a bad rap, for good reason, but I still think it's a good game. the muscle car customisation in that game is really good. It also helped me discover one of my favourite muscle cars, the Hemi 'Cuda.

LEGO Racers. The powerups are funny and the car building is intuitive. The tracks are pretty and creative. I still play it frequently even now.

Second place comes for Mario Kart Double Dash

NFS: Most Wanted followed by Burnout Legends on the PSP. Loved that game. Great music, great gameplay, and portable! Wonderful!

Pretty much only the Mario Kart and F-Zero series (I'm not a fan of racing game in general).
