Grunge. Grunge. And more Grunge.
Very good taste if I do say so myself.

I quite like any of the old school rock n roll stuff and new punkish stuff. This ranges from AC/DC, Nirvana, Metallica, Megadeath, Jimi Hendrix, Sex Pistols to Blink-182, NOFX, +44, Green Day (I know they're not exactly...well...new but still most people think they are), Sum 41.

Pretty varied though since I do like the occasional rap song, love the blues and even like some (not a lot but some) techno/house/etc.

And I say metal in the broadest form possible, because I listen to a pretty ecclectic set of bands.
Check out this band: Into Eternity. They are Death Metal, so you hopefully will like them. AHEM They are good Death Metal
Hmm, not too sold on his voice, his singy voice that is. It's a bit too cheesy for my liking...
If you like Death metal, I assume you like melodic death metal, yes?
Plug time anyway! :p
Personally I think Predator's portrait by them has much better songs, but it's impossible to find good quality links on youtube.
Colony and Clayman by In Flames are also insanely bitchin.

Mostly metal, but also apreciate jazz, some classical stuff, also like some DnB and ambient music.

Actualy I simply prefer instrumental music in general (with exception in DnB, though I dont listen to that much), anything with nicely done instruments can catch my ear.

Genre Nazis...how so? So far the response has been fairly diverse. I expected very few people to actually list classical music as it seems to be more of an academic experience than a popular genre. I did expect the overwhelming amount of metal fans, but my main goal was to see the diversity of the crowd.

I tend to latch on to various artists rather than genres, for example I LOVE Less Than Jake, but wouldn't say I was a huge ska fan, same goes for Rammstein or Turisas and metal.

But I supposed my favourite bands tend to fall mainly into classic rock (Floyd/Beatles/Who/Zeppelin) and folk-rock (Frank Turner/Dropkick Murphys/The Pogues/Levellers).

I suppose as an exception to what I just said I'd say I like trance as a genre (hence the avatar) but that's because compilations are more common than albums by individual artists due to the club scene, so you tend to only know a handful of tracks by each artist.

There is a whole host of other shit too (some EBM, some hip-hop etc...) but the above bands are probably the favourites.

I mean the people who spend their entire time differentiating the "core" bands, death metal to black metal and electronica to pop

It is nothing but trolling and no one likes it

Experimental, mainly, but into post-rock, hip-hop, contemporary compositions (Schaeffer, Ligeti, et al) piano works by Eric Satie and Morton Feldman, black metal, garage rock from the 60's, soul and northern soul...

Wells, into quite a bit of music (I should be, I'm a music producer/researcher after all)

Heavy Metal. Metallica, Disturbed, AC/DC......shit like that. I realise a lot of people do not consider AC/DC to be heavy metal but regardless.

Old School Alternative and AltPop are my 2 favorite.
What on earth is "altpop"? Surely that's an oxymoron.
Just because music is popular doesn't mean it's pop genrewise and vice versa. I would be happy to PM you some if you're curious.

So it's music that sounds like what we might describe as "pop", but less mainstream? I think I get it. So like... Imogen Heap?

Yeah somewhat. The hush Sound, Jukebox the Ghost, and The New Pornographers are other good examples as well.

As a side note, most Pop(ular) music today is actually dance or club music, not genre Pop. It's pretty confusing
