Own a DS? I'd really recommend either Elite Beat Agents or The World Ends With You if so. I've seen tons of Wal Marts and GameStops that have EBA sadly on sale for 5 dollars, so that's an easy one to get. Also, the Trauma Center games are fun and cheap, both on Wii and DS.
I recommend the Japanese version of Elite Beat Agents, Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan(Which translates into Hey! Fight! Cheer Squad. Awesome, I know.) Both it and the sequel are great, with fun music and comic-style narrative, they aren't region locked and none of the text is essential so it's definitely worth getting especially if you are already a fan of EBA.
I actually know of those games and have always wanted to play them, just haven't had a good opportunity to do so cheaply.

Fatal Frame ? any of its incarnations, but it would probably pay off to play the first three in order.

Tales of the Abyss

Tales of Symphonia.

Seriously, the Tales series never gets enough love and they're arguably my favorite series. I fell out with Final Fantasy after X and even before that I was never a big fan of them. I've always loved Tales games; their plots are interesting and the characters are intriguing and are developed. The only problems being that no one seems to know them very well and they can be really hard to find.

Disciples 1 and 2. It's high fantasy turn based strategy. They are excellent games but hardly anyone has ever heard of them. They're on GOG for $5-$10.
Seconded. Just don't play the 3rd one expecting the awesomeness of the first 2. Or just don't play the 3rd one at all. Forget I even mentioned anything about Disciples 3.

The Touhou Series...

Part of the Bullet Hell genre of games... Very fun and difficult...

I personally don't know anyone who has ever heard of it before...
I thought Touhou was pretty well known.

The Suffering. A pretty good third-person action/survival horror game with interesting enemies and a moral choice system that works better than most games that try that kind of thing.
Did you ever end up playing the Suffering 2? Your save from the first game effected the storyline of the second in many subtle ways. Yet to find another game that manages that kind of continuity.

OT: American McGee's Grimm, Call of Cthulhu: Dark corners of the Earth, The Discworld games, Impossible Creatures, Lords of the Realm 2, Majesty, Mech Commander 1 + 2, No One Lives Forever 1 + 2, Shogo M.A.D, Star Trek: Armada 2... The list just goes on

I've got an unknown one for ya.

Deadlock: Planetary Conquest.

I first played it when I was still in primary school, and I LOVED IT!

Then I lost the disk, years went by, and I forgot the name of it. Finally I remembered it again and got the demo. Happy ending!

As for the game itself, it's a turn-based strategy game set in space.

Look up Mount and blade: Warband.

One of my all-time favorites. Made by two people, is what really surprised me, though.

Oh, theres a demo too
Mount&Blade is hardly unknown. It's pretty well known now.

OT: Anachronox. No one seems to have ever heard about that old gem. Best RPG of its time so anyone sayin the FF games are good, they've obviously not played this one, or are complete r-tards.

Does ICO count? I loved it. More than Shadow OF The Colossus, in fact.
Those two games are so unheard of that they've become popular. Hipster :p

OT: Tomba for the PSOne, Digimon World 3 also. I don't know if Serious Sam is unknown but he is mentioned VERY RARELY.

Oh come on!
I'm not usually the one to do this but this thread has already been done, yesterday in fact.

*Sigh*
Iji, I don't know anyone that has played that game.
Indie metroid style game, it's free just google it.
