Hello there! Hope you don't mind, I'll be taking shelter here in Gaming Discussion for a while to avoid the abundance of drowning topics in my usual domain of the Off Topic board.

While I'm here, I decided to ask a question that I was surprised to not see in this board. What is your favorite video game ever? Explain why, if you feel so inclined.

Personally, I'll go with Majora's Mask. The controls might feel a bit sloppy at times and I'm sure there are quite a few more problems, but they're all dwarfed by the feels that this game makes me feel. I felt depression, joy, and curiosity all at the same time while playing it. My first full playthrough took place only one or two years ago, and once I finished it, Ocarina of Time was immediately knocked off its throne as my favorite Zelda game, but blind nostalgia made me still consider it my favorite game. It was only after a second playthrough that I acknowledged just how beautiful the game was and placed it in my "favorite game ever" slot.

So what about you, my fine-feathered Escapist pals? What would you consider to be the magnum opus of the video game world?

This question pops up every now and then. I think even I've asked it before lol

For me it's Legend of Mana for the PSX.

I mean the game isn't without its flaws, but I just absolutely love that game.

It's gorgeous, it's fun, it has a decent co-op system, TONS of customization options, plenty of new stuff to discover, kick-ass soundtrack, great replay value, I could go on and on.

So yeah, Legend of Mana for me. Absolutely love that game. I have been waiting for a Mana game that I enjoy half as much as I did Legend, and while it doesn't seem like it's ever going to happen, I like to stay hopeful.

Mine is either Shadow of the Colossus or Okami. I have been debating between the two games for years and I have yet to pick my number one.

I guess its SimCity 4 Rush Hour with the Network Addon Mod. That game just doesn't get old to me, probably because half the game is played in my head, what with all the planning and all.

My personal favorite and what I consider the "magnum opus of the video game world" are two entirely different games. I actually know what the former is.

My all-time favorite is the original Devil May Cry. The combination of the creepy atmosphere, awesome sound design, intimidating enemies, (then) relentlessly stylish and fast-paced combat, and the cool, collected protagonist who ventured into the darkest depths of hell with a grin and a one-liner all won me over like no other game had before or has since.

Morrowind. It's got a massive open world that's actually worth exploring. Also, levitation. Also, magic mushroom houses (no, not that kind). Also, lots and lots of awesome mods.

I love a lot of games. But there is one game that always made me come back for more. I've beaten the game countless times and I've never gotten tired of it.

That game is:

I'm torn between two unusual choices: Rayman 3 and Epic Mickey. I'm big on platformers, and both games have great music, vibrant colors, interesting worlds, and...just amazing atmosphere in general. Close behind them (but vastly different) are Fallout: New Vegas and Spec-Ops: The Line.

Final Fantasy VII still not really going to expand again its just nothing has ever surpassed it for me. Its also the only RPG I have been able to play through multiple times and not get bored.

While there are a few games I think are better than it, far, far, better than it, I couldn't say, with a straight face, that my favorite game is anything other than Kingdom Hearts. Mock me if you will, but I have so many wonderful memories playing that game and its sequel (note the use of singular), that no other game has or ever will be able to match it. Am I blinded by nostalgia? Definitely. But it's a blindness that I love.

Yeah, my answer will change depending on my mood sometimes. I had been playing some action style rpgs lately... so my answer would have been Secret of Mana. But had I been going thru a JRPG I might have just as easily said Chrono Cross. As it is, I bought Just Cause 2 during last weekend's Steam sale... and feeling sandboxey I might have to say GTA Vice City. I love the 80's retro feel in all of it's crapulance (who doesn't love a virtual killing spree to "Your Love" by The Outfield.) But had I switched to a shooter, I would easily have said Perfect Dark N64. Or adventure type... SotC or Zelda OoT. I need to pick up another copy of freespace 2 so I can try out the Babylon 5 and Wing Commander mods, and then I might say WC3 or TIE Fighter. Or if a good survival/horror game ever surfaces again I might play it and say Silent Hill 2 was the best...

It really just depends on what I'm playing, but any of those work. I can't really say any one of those is better than the others (in my enjoyment of them anyway.)

First post with new avatar. Many internet cookies to anyone who can guess what the background is from and where I got the character I edited into it.

Morrowind. It is the single more immersive game I have ever played. I love the RPG mechanics, I love the setting, the characters, the cultures, the monsters, everything. Every glaring flaw that others might point just enhances the game for me. The only thing that sucks about it is the constant crashing that seems to happen with it. I don't know if I got used to it over the years, but it does seem to happen FAR less than when I ran it on my first PC.

A close contender would be Okami. What it lacks in the depth that I enjoy in Morrowind, it makes up for in bugless polish, art style, music, and overall sense of adventure. Adventure games are amazing in my book, but they will always have a hard time matching a really good RPG. Sadly, I'm finding it hard to find good RPGs or Adventure games these days. Legend of Grimrock was the best I've had in years.

Fallout 2 without any shadow of a doubt. It was so funny and I was uncovering little homages to films and pop culture through years of replay.
