Command & Conquer Generals: Zero Hour. Generals was pretty good, but the addition in Zero Hour of 3 variant armies for each of the forces makes for such an awesome game. Maybe a little unbalanced, what with a small force of Emperor tanks upgraded with gatling turrets being a massive ***** to take out, but it's a bloody good game that I still play today.

Nothing wrong with WC3, personally I seldom play the normal maps, I love the shit people made for it instead. Some great RPG's and whatnot.

No other RTS allows you roleplay. It's badass. Oh and the game is fun too.
What do you mean allows roleplay?

Indeed. I hear Starcraft 2 can make custom maps way better then wc3 though so when I get it in a month it better be like discovering masturbation, your first horror movie, and... I will think of rest later.
Also look at Youtube video of Starcraft 2 custom maps :p

Well, me and a bunch of friends LAN it up, effectively create characters, and do scenarios. Usually one person'll be an enemy, or someone to be assassinated and it's the other guys' job to kill him. Due to every unit having an inventory, a name, and the detail of the game (destructible environments, bullet penetration, isometric direct control, etc. this works better than in most fps.

Huh, and are random games like that accessable, or is it just you and your friends who have it set up? (I don't have any friends who do roleplaying, atleast not real life ones so it would be nicer for me if I could just join a random game or w/e) Sounds pretty damn cool.

I've got SC2 and so far my only problem is that when I press to join a game it shows what maps are popular rather than showing me servers/games to join. (I could press on a map I want to play and it will make me create a game instead of joining a premade one (because no game has been made, it just shows it anyway))

Company of Heroes, for it's somewhat realism and the pure amount of mods there are for it. It was also the first really good RTS I played.

Age of Mythology. One of the first RTS's I played, and still my favorite. I played the game to death back in the day. I am surprised my CD still works.

Galcon, because it's the only RTS simple enough for me to play. It's also an addictive, bite-sized RTS that can be simultaneously hectic and strategic.

Ive gone away from AoE type games. While I think that they helped build the genre, I think they are outmoded and poorly realised, almost always devolving into select all attack move here, or stalemate though resource starvation. I remember playing AoE online, you could actually get to a skill level where it was impossible to lose simply because you could always force a stalemate. The limit cap of 200 was also unrealistic considering a good economy required between 90 and 120 villagers. Leaving battles feeling very undermanned and somewhat lacking in epicness. Starcraft 2 has solved this to some extent, however I still dont feel that the AoE formate is the way to go any more.

There are 3 real direction I forsee for RTS. In no particular order:

Total War style. Civ style world building with set piece strategic battles with limited resources.

Supreme Commander (the first one). Massive scale wars with almost limitless units and a very large variety of units.

Dawn Of War 2 Style. Highly limited unit counts with a large emphasis on preservation of units, micromanagement and cover. The second generation of this format is currently being realised in Xompany of Heroes Online, which has improved drastically on DoW2 just because it doesnt use Games for windows :p

All of these give an intense and epic feel I feel is just lacking in the standard AoE format, and imo, are the way forward for the RTS genre.

I enjoyed AoE 1 and 2, and I enjoyed C&C right from the first up to RA3. I just thing the boat has sailed on this format unless something radical changes. Im still getting to grips with SC2. It might change my mind yet. But certainly you need to feel like units are worth more in these games and promote ding something other than spamming one or 2 units.
