Empire Earth - I just loved how I could load it up, go from caveman to spaceman and whoop some AI ass in skirmish. Ha got nukes first and your still in medieval times losers! Send in the parachute troopers!

Age of Empires, because it introduced me to the genre. I first played it when I was like 5 or 6, and loved it, despite sucking at it.

Although, I haven't played Starcraft yet, so AoE might get kicked off it's throne.

Homeworld 1 and 2. Epic space battles, three dimensional space.
And we have a winner!
No other RTS keeps me as enthralled as Homeworld. Just the vast emptiness of space around you, the great sizes of your fleets, the 3D space movement...the game is just so freaking awesome. Easily my favourite, hands down. Nothing else even touches the Homeworld series.

Command and Conquer red alert. It had the best death noises for its units and everyone loves a bit of hell march.........

Ah, the amount of nostalgia I feel is amazing. Loved playing this on Playstation 1.

Anyway, my favorite would be..... Hearts of Iron II (if that counts) Just so much to do there

Total Annihilation. It came out in 1997.

It had many firsts, including being the first to have full 3D units and terrain. It also has a physics system which determines whether or not missiles, rockets, gauss cannons and other ordinance will hit or miss.

The sound track is great and the gameplay is frantic, frenetic and awesome.

I loved jacking lone destroyers and cruisers vs the AI with my salvage corvettes. So damn fun :D

Medieval II: Total War, and Empire: Total War. For all of their glitches, the battles are suitably epic and all of the faffing around, managing your finances and construction is streamlined into a turn-based system, leaving real-time gameplay for the bits where it mattered, namely the battles. Each one did a good job basing the gameplay around the style of warfare at the time in which they took place.

Company of Heroes, for it's somewhat realism and the pure amount of mods there are for it. It was also the first really good RTS I played.
Agreed. There's so few games where your units feel like they're actually doing something other than staring at enemies until their health bars fell off. CoH's units felt real, like your riflemen were actually standing there picking away at the Nazis.

It was an amazing experience.

Age of Mythology. I played so often it's ridiculous. I liked having godly powers over the innocent denizens of my civilization. Plus, it had "educational" information on the myths and whatnot, which I found interesting.

I also liked the cheat codes. o_~ Flying purple hippo that trails rainbows and can destroy anything (except possibly the Canadian bears)? Heck ya!
Still remember some of them, even though it's been years since I mucked around on that game.

Dawn of War. ....because it's freaking Dawn of War.
I loved the original and its expansions (especially Dark Crusade). The game really captures the brutality of the 40k universe. Although I enjoy DOW 2, it failed to capture the quintessential 40k 'brutal and epic' feel as effectively as the original.

Warcraft 3. So much hours put into it...
I feel like such a nerd...
Really? Warcraft 3 (and CS 1.6) is played by cool people in my country. It is my favorite RTS too. I don't play it anymore though. Everyone moved on to DoTA and WoW. I don't really like that stuff.

I like WC3 because it has a good story and great gameplay. Everything is perfectly balanced and it requires skill to play.

Probably Rome Total War.

WarCraft II has a special place in my heart, alongside Total Annihilation. I should also mention Powermonger, that should not be forgotten!
