Arcanum was a revelation. Everything that was great about Fallout 1 and 2, in a kind of historical Shadowrun world, with dialogue trees that almost rival Planescape. Who owns the rights, and how can we convince them to start work on a sequel?

Did anyone else ever have so much fun playing Dark Sun: Shattered Lands? Planescape: Torment still hands down most awesome story ever, but DS was a lot of fun too. Shame I've never really been able to get into Wake of the Ravager, and now it's a headache to get running.

Diablo II by far,

then at a distant, but still awesome second there's Knights of the Old Republic

KoTOR, Diablo II and Final Fantasy Tactics are my top 3 for older RPGs, and I have yet to see a current-gen game live up to any of these.

EDIT: Forgot Baldur's Gate. Damn. Now it's a top 4...

Baldur's Gate II. Especially with a decent imported character from BG1.

It's even more awesome with BGTrilogy or BG1Tutu. And a widescreen hack, for modern resolutions.

Fable 1, I've been playing this game ever since it released. It still has a quirky charm about it that I love dearly.

The only game I haven't seen mentioned yet would be Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. It's all about the atmosphere and story.

I probably spent the most time overall with Neverwinter Nights. The module system and editor were sheer genius. KoToR, BG II, and Planescape were brilliant as well.

Even though I played through both I really don't consider Fallout 1 or 2 that great. I just couldn't get into them. I consider the Elder Scroll line of games to be mediocre as well.

Meh, even if it were "including this generation" it'd still be Planescape Torment. That, and Bloodlines. I'm still waiting for another game, if not RPG, to match the atmosphere, storyline and, most important, dialogue. Argue all you want, but I've yet to see anything at all resembling the incredibly fleshed out characters in Bloodlines. Mass Effect possibly excluded, because I haven't played it yet, it could be up there.
