Well I'm only going to buy Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Dishonored 2 this year, so I'll keep you posted.

So far, DOOM for sure.

I haven't even played that much of it though, to be honest. However, what I have played of it is amazing. It looks fantastic, runs VERY well, and the amount I played was so much fun it actually took me out of my gaming slump I've been having lately.

I'm still eager for No Man's Sky. I really hope it ends up well...I should know by now not to get my hopes up too high for any game, but I just can't help myself. Space exploration is a dream of mine, and this looks as close to the experience I want that's not just space combat.

None released have overly impressed me yet although that is not to say I have not got some fun out of games like Overwatch and SFV ofc among many others. It could be Nioh for me but I wont know until its released but the demo really gripped me.

GGXRD Revelator is also a possibility. I havent played the (PS4) game yet (intend to do that tonight) but when I played it in Japanese arcades it was incredible. I am hoping a game comes out that blows my mind but I am not holding my breath.

I'd definitely say XCOM 2. It's been amazing.

Reading the thread posts, did no one ( myself included) buy any games this year? Holy shit.
Which thread did you read? The following were mentioned up to your post:

Total War Warhammer
Uncharted 4
Overwatch
Mirror's Edge
XCOM 2
Star Fox U
Stardew Valley
Dark Souls 3
Doom
VA-11 Hall-A
Sakura Dungeon
Ratchet and Clank

Mentioned as games people have played, that is. Or are you suggesting that people didn't buy them yet played them?

Can think of a new nominees, with no real clear winner.

STARDEW VALLEY - Probably the closest thing to a clean "GOTY" candidate, held back only by narrow scope. A game that really showed the power of clarity of vision and design. I find it very difficult to complain about any element of its construction. Reeks "labor of love" all over.

XCOM 2 - Ambitious sequel with more meaty/entertaining XCOM game play. Hampered, to some degree, by some questionable design decisions and the removal of depth and complexity from the game+expansion it followed, to say nothing of the heavily played Long War mod. Needs more time in the oven. Lousy DLC hasn't helped it.

BANNER SAGA 2 - Really just the second chapter in an ongoing saga...this would be my choice were it not for the fact that it's a middle chapter swimming on its own, with no clear beginning or end. Fantastic story telling and world building.

OVERWATCH - Like Stardew Valley, very difficult game to fault in terms of its design. But whereas Stardew Valley is a single player exercise and relaxing/peaceful, Overwatch is a multiplayer exercise and thus its quality is often contingent on the strength of the matchmaking...which is whimsical at best.

HONORABLE MENTION

Total War: Warhammer - Fun game, needs more time/expansions. Not quite on par with the above.

'XCOM 1' is called XCOM: Enemy Unknown. There was another Enemy Unknown in the series, but that was called UFO: Enemy Unknown.

Also, what would you consider interesting end game and weapon choices? XCOM 2's ending was a teaser for a Terror From The Deep expansion. As for weapon choices, I thought the proving grounds and DLC added a ton of cool weapon/armor variations. I get it's your opinion. I'm simply curious as to what you would have wanted.
Oh your right, I had forgotten that it was called EU, still hate renaming stuff, like DOOM.

As for weapon, I haven't played it since release so it might have changed, but all you had were straight upgrade, ballistic to laser to plasma with no choice in between, no side upgrade or anything like that. Once you research it you just equipped it on everyone and didn't really do anything. I think it'd be more interesting if all three line were viable and had there own upgrade so that there's a real choice involved. Same for armor, you ended with maybe two possibility at end game for armor (the one you could become a ghost and the heavy armor) with again not really any other choice, everything else was just an inferior version. You had lots of choice for the accessory to bring, that was cool, I just wanted something similar for weapon/armor.

By lack of interesting end game I mean the game became cake once you got close to the end, psychic were overpowered (even more than EU squasight sniper) and you could easily manufacture a ton safely in your base. The final mission was interesting (although a bit on the cheap side sine if you were unlucky the boss would just port super far away from you).

None.

I've had fun with new games, but nothing has stood out as anything special

- Uncharted 4 was pretty great, but doesn't hold up too well over multiple playthroughs.
- Ratchet and Clank was a fun, but only reminded me how stale and shitty the humor and characters have become over the years.
- Dark Souls 3 was so boring I just stopped playing.
- Doom was great, but after 4 hours of shooting and melee-finishing the same enemies while running through the same environments without anything to break up the monotony, I got a bit tired of it.

Here's hoping the holidays will bring some real fireworks.

Hasn't really been a great year for games so far, sadly.

I guess I would say Doom because that game was a pretty awesome, solid experience, or Battleborn because it's held my attention since it came out, and I haven't been able to say that about an online multiplayer game in years.

Okay, you know what? I'm in a bad mood and have some time on my hands so let's do this.

Given that the post you quoted was number 22 on the list, let's do some counting shall we ?

Post 2: "Uh...Skyrim? I don't think Ive gotten many new games in 2016. I got Street Fighter V...but that isn't worth GOTY even in 1991."

Post 3: "Uncharted 4.Mostly because its the only game I have bought this year so far"

Post 6: "You know, now that I think about it... I'm not sure I've played many 2016 games. And the ones I have played have been pretty... not good."

Post 7: "The best game released so far has been Dark Soul's 3. I really hate to admit it, though, because in my opinion...

Dark Souls 3 was the most disappointing game I've ever played."

Post 8: "I don't think I've played any games that released this year."

Post 10: "Well, I started playing Witcher 3 this year, does that count?

So far out of the games that I started (this year), Witcher 3, South Park: the Stick of Truth seem like winners to me. Honourable mentions go to Styx: Master of Shadows and Ducktales remastered, though I haven't finished either of them. " ( this poster implied he didn't play any games released in 2016)

Post 12: "Probably cheating cause it's a game that's not out yet, but Monster Hunter Generations is shaping up to be absolutely fantastic. I think it will be the best game of this year (at least for me).

But from the games I've played this year, probably Rise of the Tomb Raider and Destiny. I know, I know - those two are not from this year, but I only played those two this year, and both have been fantastic in their own ways."

Post 16: "I haven't picked up many games at all this year, so I'm going to have to say Uncharted 4."

post 20 : "Uncharted 4 for me, definitely. Granted... I haven't PLAYED many releases this year"

Post 21 : "Are we basing GOTY on games actually released this year? Or games that we ourselves played this year? Because I generally don't play any new release games, so I'm always a few years behind the curve on that front."

Alright, so as you can see, 10 out of 20 ( because post number 1 belongs to OP) if we are the to take them at their word, either haven't bought any games this year or played few games this year. So half the people before my post said they didn't play that many games if any. Which lead to me being surprised that people ( along with myself) didn't buy a lot of games this year given the number of releases that has come out since january.

Of course you could have probably taken my post literally,as in i really thought that no one bought any games this year, which i guess would be reasonable since this is the internet. However my response right after would disprove that because i stated 3 games that i did play, which was Street fighter 5, Salt and Sanctuary and Enter the Gungeon.

Given that your claim was a
PRETTY BIG EXAGGERATION

I felt the need to clarify. When you start shifting the goalpoasts, it makes it sound even funnier, though - you decided to go from "none" to "maybe some" AND had to exclude one post in order to even make it to 50% justification of you emphasising to make a point.
hyperbole
You are literally single handedly destroying any credibility anyone might have when using hyperbole.

I haven't had a lot of time for gaming this year, but so far I'd say it's a toss-up between Uncharted 4 and Doom. The former might just be in the running for prettiest game of all time on top of being generally really fun to play, and the latter nails the power fantasy idea so well it might as well rename itself 'Catharsis: The Video Game'.

Duh. You're a smart guy. Did you have any doubt that it was an exaggeration given this is a videogame forum? I mean really. People on these forums buy videogames. No shit.

Also i excluded the op because it made no sense to include him. Since i was talking about replies to HIS thread.

Yes. Yes, I did have my doubts. Admittedly, it wasn't very likely, but still.

"Dark Souls III" - finally a Dark Souls game I actually got invested in. With the exception of the earliest zones it's easily my favourite world of the bunch. The linearity is a bit of a shame but at least that stops it from feeling like so much padding, and at the end of the day I'm in these games for the world. I actually like the boss fights in this game which is a joy after all that tedium in the other games.

It's not "Bloodborne", but it's the closest "Dark Souls" will ever get to it.

Er, does Elite Dangerous count? ED:Horizons, at least, was a 2016 release on console, so that's by far and away my GotY. Unless another mind warpingly ambitious space-sim comes out on console before the end of the XB1, it'll also be one of my favourite games of the gen, too.

...it's probably the only 'new' game I've played this year, of course, so it's not exactly a fair contest for the arbitrary crown of GotY thus far.

Evonisia said:

That's more or less the reason I've not gotten it yet, as it happens.
