Americans will never lower there ego.........
no,we never will. you know why? because we've never lost a war,and fought through some of the worst wars in the last 500 years. revolutionary,1812,civil,WWI,WWII,korean,vietnam,gulf,and right now iraqi/afgan. i believe we're the best country in all history, but that's just because i'm quite a bit ignorant. i love my country. and that's that.
You never lost a war? lol. You lost 1812 (invaded, got pushed back, had the White House burned, and only went back to the old borders because the Brit in charge didn't want to risk any losses in battle so he pulled back), korea (you won, then decided to push towards china, who pushed you back...that's a loss), and vietnam (ran screaming from the country pretty much). Iraqi/afgan, yeah, those are largely a loss too. You entered WWII at the end of the war, like little self interested cowards you only joined the allies when you yourself were threatened. Ever since WWII you have continued to fight not for what was right, but only for what was in your self interest. While your individual soldiers have often been admirable, the American military strategy and success is spotty at best.
Agreed.
Agreed... and I'm American.

I'd say an average american is obese, believes that more guns equal less crime, and has very strong opinions based on very little knowledge. Sees stubbornness as a virtue and admitting mistakes as a weakness. Overly patriotic and blames anyone for hating america if they criticize america for anything whatsoever.

Believes in god as a symbol of americanness rather than caring what the religion actually contains. Thinks with emotion and shouts a lot when cornered.

As you may well know england is about one street, we are all called or know someone called john smith and we pass the queen every day in our stagecoach before sinking our awfully dentisted teeth into tea and scones what what!.... oh and we all wear bowler hats
Man, I love different stereotypes sometimes, I think of football hooligans, and my horrifying chav family over in England, as stereotypical English people.

It's all based on experience, I guess.

For me, as an Australian I find the outback bush tucker crocodile hunter stereotype hilarious, considering Australia is one of the most urbanised countries in the world. I think it's something like 90% of our population live in our capital cities.

Country Australia: Don't ever go there. It doesn't exist.
I agree, although the french stereotype is a thing of beauty, beret, french bread, a terrible thin moustache, hell practicllly a mime artist who has just come from eating some poor horse/frog/snail and who runs away a lot
And reeks of garlic can't forget that.

Starting that first post with a bang? Welcome to the Escapist.

I know when I was in China I was considered the 'average' american by everyone. I have blonde hair and blue eyes and I'm about 6'6 1/2' (about 200cm). So, I really wondered what was going on in china where they think we're all that tall. And yes I stuck out of any crowd I was in pretty much instantly.

I love the French's interpretation of America from The Triplets of Bellville: Loud, giant blobs surrounded by more loud, giant blobs; all with hamburgers in their stubby hands.

Not that it's true, but I couldn't help but laugh.

There are a lot of Americans that are great people, many of whom I speak to on this forum. The individual is fine by me.

However, I draw the line at America as a collective race, the culturally self-righteous and high-and-mighty attitudes that you see all the time on TV and, in fact, used by many people on this very forum as well. Pride is the worst of the Seven Deadly Sins, and it seems as though they have no shortage of it.

Put simply: There are great Americans, but I dislike the collective.

I'm impressed by the civility of this thread thusfar. I wonder when the trolls will get here and start flinging poo.

One thing I'm curious of... just about all of the posts here have said americans are fat/obese. I'm curious as to where this comes from. Sure America might have its fair share of fat people... but they're not the majority. Fat people stick out of the crowd (literally) as much here as they do anywhere. They're certainly not the majority, at least not where I live, and I was under the impression that I lived in one of the top 5 fattest cities in America.
Actually it's something like 58% or 68% of americans are considered 'overweight' by medical standards which is more than half; the majority!
Those same "medical standards" consider professional athletes overweight because they have too much muscle mass. However, I don't believe its that high, lets see a source on those numbers.

Okay, I know, that yes, I am American, but I don't really identify myself in those terms. In fact, I don't really identify myself in terms of race, gender, ethnicity, nationality (obviously), or religion. And besides I don't really like living in America all that much anyway. So, to answer the thread poster's question... I KNOW bloody well that the "Average American" is an idiot.

an overweight, gun toting hick, yelling at the tv from his beer stained arm chair and flecks of dried on condiments on his chin, fried chicken in a bucket on the floor and a cross nailed to the wall of his two wide trailer while his seven, equally obese, children loll lazily about; suffocated by the weight of their own flab.

The most current government stats can be found here, including a really cool graphical display of the increasing problem with weight: http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/Obesity/trend/maps/index.htm
Wow thats worse than I imagined America was maybe yanks should invest their economic stimulus into treadmills?

i believe we should.
ya, why let facts matter lol
I think the question is never the amount of wars you win by why you fight them, while america has won many wars its almost always been because it picked on a weaker, poorer or much exhausted opponant. Im british and we have been in many war and won many... this is often because we had guns and the other side has sharp sticks. So a wins a win but its hardly aything to be proud of especially if nothing changes. Besides i think that winning a war isnt the reason for the american ego, until recently it was the complete control over the world economy as well as its nuclear dick off with russia, to which the only looser was the taxpayer cos nobody ever uses the bloody things (luckily). You wanna know whos a truely inspiring country, belgium they been buttraped so many times and they still make good beer!
