Usually it's games that I was REALLY hyped for that fail to deliver that get under my skin when everyone else finds them amazing-the most recent example being Fallout3. I was a mnassive fan of the original games and was also a big Elder Scrolls fan AND am not averse to FPS either so when Bethesda picked up the reigns and promised a mash of genres with my favourite WRPG world I was totally up for it.

I watched all te trailers, picked over all the news for months on end leading up to release gettin more excited by the minute about the choices and the combat where you could use VATS or FPS aiming.I was completely convinced of it's greatness. What could possibly go wrong?

Well, I KNOW Bethesda so I was NEVER expecting it to, you know, WORK on day one so the bugs and glitches weren't what killed it for me. No, the fact is I found the FPshooting terribly stiff and unwieldy and plainly NOT fun and VATS so arbitrary that it even seems to me to ignore it's OWN percentages!! Add in an unsatisfying main story arc and a game way too simple if you find the sodding ray gun early on and the way Bethesda managed to lose 90% of the charm and atmosphere the originals had and you might start to understand why I feel puzzled at people declaring their undying love for the game.

Naturally, it isn't alone and I also fail to see what the fuss is about with Portal(1 and 2) as to me they're just very simple games based on a gimmick with one dimensional stories and no replay value. What's to give a ten/ten for there? I also, currently, can't understand the continued love for Halo. I USED to be a lover of the MC but I couldn't keep it up after bungie decided it was time to make the SP te simple, backwards relation to the MP aspects of the series. I only really liked the SP anyway so we kind of grew apart I guess but I still find myself at odds with my peers over it.

Anyway, Fallout3 is definitely the one that annoys me most when people can't believe you don't agree that it's the bestest thing ever. It led me on for years and I got no closure on my dreams-it left me with blue balls for s series that I know will never be back in a form I can love. It was cruel.

Dead Space, Uncharted, Guitar Hero, Resident Evil 5, none lived near up to what i had heard from friends but the biggest dissapointment of all is Halo:Reach, after not playing the series since #2 I figured it would surpass that game easily, nope it just fell flat on its face whith the story characters being copy pastes of the most popular action genre stereotypes.

My vote goes to Call of Duty. Very generic game. It might be a very well done game, but its been done before and it will be done again. I need something at least a little bit unique.

God of War series.
Fun, skillful...but boring and tired to me
An amazing series in quality, but I just don't like it for an inexplicable reason.
I have no fun playing it anymore.
Also the fact that every Hack n Slash or Beat em Up is automatically related to it, despite it not being the first or even the best.

Probably Half-Life 2. But that doesn't mean I hate the game! I in fact enjoy it quite a bit. But of games that everyone seems to love, I feel like I like it a lot less than most people. Still, I admire Valve for crafting a very fine game. Its just not for me.

There are a number of popular games/genres that I've never really done much with - JRPGs, console FPSs, MMOs . . . I'd probably quite dislike playing one of these through but at the moment I'm really more indifferent more than anything else.

At the moment Mass Effect is driving me up a wall. The game is great but despite having far more computer than I need to run it I have to keep the graphics minimized and it still crashes constantly. The only fix I can get is "update my video drivers" but I'm using the most recent ones and this game still kills my graphics card after an hour or so. :(

It seems unfair to criticize a game based on stability problems like this, at least since they're not wide-spread. So I'd have to go with Half-Life. I really enjoyed Half-Life but the maps were mind-numbingly linear, the enemy AI wasn't everything it was supposed to be, and Xen was just awful.

I remember reading an article in CGW where the Valve guys discussed building atmosphere before the Gonarch - and how they didn't want to just throw you into an arena and have you fight a boss monster. And what happens in the game? The entire atmosphere section is cut and they just throw you into an arena to fight a boss monster. Half-Life is an excellent game, but it has plenty of faults as well.

Team Fortress 2. I just don't get the appeal. Partly to do with the stylisation, partly to do with the class based combat, partly to do with the MMO-esque loot / equip mechanics now making the whole thing much more unfriendly to anyone who has been outside of the community for some time.
You know they're all side-grades right? I can only think of one item that's a direct upgrade, and that's the Degreaser, and that's only if you have a specific item, otherwise it's still just a straight up side-grade. They really just provide you with different play styles, not better stats.

OT: In before CO- Oh, no? Ok then. In before Hal- Missed it again? Ok.

But seriously, I'm not much of a Mass Effect fan.

Fallout 3
Oblivion
World of Warcraft

While I don't think those games are 'bad' they certainly don't entertain me much beyond the first half an hour or so.

The SIMS. To each there own, but I don't get the game. Why would I want to spend hours playing a game doing stuff that I can largely do in real life.

I'm guessing a "side-grade" is an "upgrade that is so barely noticeable that it barely constitutes as being called such". But that's the point. ANY form of increased stat is still changing the meta-game, no matter how major or minor. And given some of the crazy weapons i've seen like "instant crit if you hit someone in the back", i'd say those side-grades as you call them are pretty impacting against someone who is walking into the fray naked. It might just provide a different playstyle, but at the end of the day you still have to earn the 'right' to play with that playstyle. You're not just given these weapons and items (or are you?). If you were, it would be more balanced.

I really, really don't like Halo. I can get why people would like the plot and story behind it, but I hate the games.

Demon's Souls. I just don't see the appeal. Combat is boring as hell even if you don't get killed every other minute. And to me, people getting excited about Dark Souls because it's "more challenging" is akin to self-mutilation with an ebola-infected rusted knife.

World of Warcraft. Not a bad game, just that they gave me a month free and no one saw me for that entire month, and I bathed maybe 6 times. It's like heroin, except I don't know how they made grind so addictive.

Gears of War AND Halo. I've seriously had enough space marines to last several life times.

Final Fantasy anything. The music just doesn't get me; the characters seem kind of lame; the story never really attracted me somehow.

It's fun just being an asshole, like making a family, locking the daughter, grandmother, and infant in the same room while the dad goes insane, then releasing the daughter and infant after the grandmother dies in front of them. Yes, I actually did this.
OT: I generally know enough about the games I play to not expect too much of them, so I enjoy the games I play to the extent I should.
