Look at my profile.

For the lazy people, it's "You don't need a reason to help people." It's Zidane's motto from Final Fantasy IX and it fits me.

"Everyone is an idiot, this includes you. Try and be less of an idiot than everyone else."
Everyone is an idiot relative to what?
To the established notion of how some people are "clever" and some people are "stupid". People say "oh such and such is clever/stupid" where as my life has shown me that "clever" people are capable of acts of extreme stupidity. As a result its easiest to assume everyone, including me is an idiot until they prove otherwise. Given that, what I feel I have to do in order to succeed in life is just be less of an idiot than everyone around me.

It won't save me from stupidity and being an idiot all the time, but I can at least try and be less of an idiot. Hope that clears it up.

Also this reminded me of another of my mottos/maxims or whatever you would call them.

"Everything in moderation, including moderation."
I think your confusing being an idiot with accidental cock ups. Everyone makes mistakes sometimes. Although that does clear up the issue about relativity.
Kinda apart from the fact that most "accidents" are down to someone making a mistake, be it a missed judgement or any number of things.

I read somewhere once that 90% of car "accidents" are down to driver error. Given my experiences fixing computers for people I have always experienced problems being caused by peoples ignorance, accidents do happen but most of the time its someones (quite often mine) fault. People often blame things they don't understand for problems, be it demons blighting the crops or the computer stealing their data.

Randomness is a big factor but often it is blamed when the fault lies elsewhere. "I crashed because there was a patch of ice and the car slid out" not "I crashed because I was going to fast despite the fact I knew it was icy"
Ignorance doesn't make you and idiot either, it's mostly just laziness or the constant distractions of life that make you overlook things which then lead to an accident. Still though you can't blame people for that, if everyone took every single factor into consideration then people would never make decisions, and you still need to take risks sometimes. Mabye the hypothetical person was driving fast on the icy road because he was in a hurry and desperately needed to get somewhere so he took the risk and blamed the ice on the road because he couldn't pay for the damages himself.

I choose to term someone who makes mistakes an idiot, or at the least a bit stupid, idiots are lazy and prone to distraction, thats almost the definition.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming people, I accept I'm as fallible as anyone, the way I see it the trick is to try and make mistakes through distraction or laziness less than those around me (easier said than done).

I'm all too happy to take risks, see "everything in moderation..." but to my mind there is a difference between taking a reasonable risk and being stupid or "an idiot".

If the hypothetical person was in a hurry it was his fault for getting flustered and having to rush, there is a reason every clock/watch I own is set between 5 and 10 mins fast and that's before I compensate for conditions and Hofstadter's Law. I have never been late for anything important, or had to defend my mistakes since I started living by "Everyone is an idiot etc" once you accept things going wrong, work out the true cause and work to avoid repeating that mistake I have found life to get a whole lot easier.

I admitted to a well off friend of the family that the reason I did badly in school was not down to any number of factors (bullying, my parents break up, my attempted suicide) I could have blamed but because I did not work hard enough. That friend is now sponsoring me through university as a direct result of what I said. In her own words "That was surprisingly mature coming from a young man" Once you accept you are at fault and stop blaming other things for your mistakes everything is easier to fix.

If you are going to be late don't risk yourself in a rush, just accept the lateness and make your apologies when you get there. Apologies, not excuses. And plan better next time.

A couple of my favorite EMS sayings:

"When dealing with patients, supervisors, or citizens, if it felt good saying it, it was the wrong thing to say"

"It is generally bad to use the words "holy shit" on scene, in reference to the patients condition"

I have a couple on my profile, but recently I said this to a friend and laughed, so I'll post it here:

I suppose mine would be one word: RESPECT

To me, respect should be the foundation of any human interaction or relationship. In many cases, even enemies have some grudging respect for each other as enemies. Respect is a large part of what prevents even those enemies from wiping each other off the planet in the absolute most psychotic and humiliating of ways. It's also a big part of the solution to resolving conflict over differences among races, religions, genders, etc. If we all can begin to just respect one another as people, that's a good start.

Anyway, that's what I would consider to be my motto. RESPECT!

Don't take this as me disregarding what your saying, I agree with it. I just think that you can't put blame on just yourself all the time, there are other reasons for bad things happening. For example in your case you can't say that was all your fault, it's hard to work past deppression.

Kudos to you for getting past it and going to uni anyway.

Yea I know you can't blame yourself all the time hell, that was a big part of my depression. I just like defending the ideas behind my "everyone is an idiot" maxim because I figure if more people in this world lived along similar lines humanity would be in a better place, its not a case of always blaming yourself, more like being willing to shoulder the blame when you ARE at fault, no matter the circumstances. I don't hold other people to it, I just wish they would work like that themselves. Which is why I take any excuse to explain it to people.

Cheers though, even if uni won't stop me being an idiot it should help :p
