I bought it a little while ago after asking for opinions on here in this thread

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.870964-Is-Elite-Dangerous-worth-the-price-Also-whats-the-DRM-on-it#21834056

So you can see some opinions there.

Im finding it fun, strangely compelling but it needs work, its got more features on the way and it can feel a little bare on content. It can start to feel a bit slow at the start trying to get a decent ship and the learning curve is pretty big for how your ship works, the tutorials really arent enough go watch some youtube videos and google any questions you have.

I'm enjoying it. The game is very much a "Do what you want" type of game. Support one faction of the others? Can do. Go independent and forgo the main three? Can do. Pirate traders? Can do. Bounty hunt pirates and smuggles? Can do. Be a highly successful trader/miner? Can do. Successful smuggler? Can do. War zone fighter? Can do. Explore space to your heart's content? Can do.

You gotta set your mind to a task and do it, otherwise it'll get boring and dull.

Good example? I decided to go crazy and have a 3 Viper (type of ship) set up. One for fighting, one for exploring human space, and one for doing bulletin board missions. And it's working out for me. But I also have a Type-6 (another ship type) for explicit trading when I wanna do that.

One of my friends bought it.
So I looked into it.
Then I bought it.
I mean, I heard it likened to "Euro Truck Simulator in space," and I love Euro Truck Simulator... And space...
After a few attempts at being a space trucker, I tossed my arms up in the air and asked are there any better ways to make more space-money?!

And those prayers were answered when I uncovered the magical world of bounty hunting.

That aside, I think the game is phenomenal, but definitely the type of thing that "isn't for everyone."
If you think you'd enjoy it, you will.
If not, then watch some game play first and ask people who already own it (as you are now).

The overall presentation just really makes this game.

From what I've heard, it's EVE for people that didn't start playing EVE 12 years ago. Is that true? I'm upgrading my computer soon, and this might be a game I get once I make the upgrades.

Not exactly, as you can't really trade with people (well you can but it's a real pain) and you don't have that much control over the different areas. All you can do is influence them, but you can't control them.

It is more a space sim with a heavy focus on the flying around part, and it really nails that.
Also it's not a true MMO, and right now working together is somewhat hard as there is no real support for that until the next patch comes out. I expect people will start grouping up to make bigger things happen at that point and hopefully it evolves from there.

So no it's not EVE and it does not seem like they want it to be either.

Eh, I dunno, I think it has the potential to be like EVE, in the idea that the players can control sectors of space. Given the forums for the game, and the frequent posts about groups looking to form clans so they can go blaze a trail and control some sector of unexplored space, I think that the player base will move to something similar to EVE. I've seen people talk about being able to eventually build player made stations and stuff, and patrolling sectors, etc. So I think, depending on how patches and modifications roll out for the game, that it could swing that way, at least in spirit. Do I think it will become like EVE in the (economic simulator) aspect? No, probably not.

its destroying my life and eating all my spare time right now and has been for some time. ive joined a huge PVE only group and i just tool around in my massively upgraded viper looking for bounty's to cash in , freighters in trouble, wars to settle and interesting things to see.

its a space opera, theres not really much to do and you do it all a lot, but if you love trading , exploration, being the scourge of the trade ways or a gun for hire, you might be patrolling that nav beacon for a while before any bounties come by, and you might have to sniff out a new trade route as they dry up frequently and if you want to sit a few thousand LS from canis majoris and have your breath taken away by the sheer size of the thing you might have to travel alone for a few days outside of habitated space, but if sitting there listning to that strange space whale song of the stars solar wind as it pings your ship sends a shiver up your spine. then it might be a good game for you.

but its not for the meek. just getting to grip with the basic flight controls will take some time , but you really dont need a joystick i am amazed how well the options can be set up to allow mouse and keyboard flight.

I'm completely in love with the game personally but it does require a lot of patience. Everything you do takes time and dedication and most of it is technically a grind, but there's just something truly special and serene about it. It really feels like a simulation of life in space. I would recommend getting some podcasts or records you've been wanting to listen to ready and you'll feel like a proper space trucker in no time.
If you've got time for a rather lengthy description of the game, read this [http://frontier.us2.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=dcbf6b86b4b0c7d1c21b73b1e&id=734e572e4a&e=9be2fc8830]. The guy really nails what the experience is all about.

I'm not sure what to think about it. I just started, so I'm still learning how to fly properly, but it strikes me as if it's going to be very time consuming just to go between places and do basic trading, which is needed to start anything (I accidentally got into a dogfight with an easy AI and got my backside handed to me simply because the starting guns are rubbish, so even when I managed to keep him in my sights I couldn't do anything to him).

On the other hand, I think I'd like a game like that, as I used to love Freelancer (and Privateer way back then), I just don't have the time needed to learn how to play properly.

You are right, there is a lot of potential to swing that way if they decide to make it that way.
All I meant was that in it's current form it is not really like it at all, and what you are able to do with the world very limited compared to EVE. As I said, it does not even have any real multiplayer support until the 1.2 wings patch comes out.
From what I can tell they don't really want to allow players to trade either, but since the players keep asking for it they just might do it anyway.
I hope it do swing that way though, as I really like the idea of a player controlled world as in EVE.
There is indeed talk about being able to build things and so on, but it sounds like they are not too keen on giving the players too much control over the world outside their ships, at least that is the vibe I am getting.

Anyways we'll see how it all turns out as it is still a work in progress. At least 1.2 looks very promising and several steps in the right direction so once it enters beta (possibly next week) we'll see how that works out. It will be great to finally be able to chat with people around you!

Oh I agree, currently, no it's not like EVE at all. But having played EVE for several years, I definitely had a familiar vibe playing it. The vast expanses of empty space with distant fast travel points. The sense of apprehension when warping into a new sector for the first time. The feeling of exploration as you travel from sector to sector, exploring, mining, hauling, etc. It felt very much in the theme of games like EVE, and Freelancer, and Privateer. Which I totally dig. I'd like to see it develop some player controlled structures and systems, but they might not take it that way. I still like the game though, but I have stopped playing it right now, other games have captured my interest. Also I like to play it at night with the lights out, so I have a real feeling of being out in space. Which is really effective...until my damn cat jumps up on the keyboard and scares the piss out of me. xD She's jet black, so I suddenly have this massive cat shadow in front of me, possibly scrabbling up my leg to get to the table. It startles me every time.
