To be honest, I don't really know what the first thing I came across was.

I've read lots and lots of discworld novels in libraries over the years.

The first one I owned myself was 'equal rites', which was quite old by that time (it's is second discworld book)

It's not often you see someone who is genuinely, and consistently funny, but the discworld books were both funny, AND insightful.
A rare combination indeed.

Well, just to be a little pedantic; Equal Rites is the third in the Discworld series.
OK, so... What are the other two? I know one of them is "The Colour of Magic", but what's the other one?
The Light Fantastic is the second Discworld book. It's a direct sequel to The Colour Of Magic.

Ah. That makes sense... I guess I remembered it incorrectly. It's definitely one of the earliest ones though, so I wasn't completely wrong...

First time I ever heard of the guy was when I was in middle school. I can't remember the reason, but my class and I were shown an old 90's animated version of his "Soul Music" story. I found it interesting, but didn't realise until later that it was based on a book. My parents got me that book for Christmas the same year and I instantly loved it. Afterwards, I just couldn't get enough of the guy's Discworld novels, and I still read all of them today, with "Wyrd Sisters" being my all-time favourite.

I read Mort at age eight as it was on the bookshelf with a bunch of other book and then started reading them in the order they came out as my dad had them ordered. My personal favourite is probably the guards series.

A friend recommended The Colour of Magic to me, was reading stuff like Eddings and Douglas Adams at the time. Read it in Swedish and found it funny but not amazing. Picked up another couple of early books in Swedish while I waited for the next book in the Wheel of Time-series to come out but it wasn't until I was traveling in Asia and started reading them in English that I truly "got it". For those that haven't been dirty, "poor" and fatigued from sleeping in crappy hostels(ie "backpacking")there is one Truth - wherever there's backpackers there's also a used book-shop and you go there and drop of your old, dirty books and put in a couple of hundred Bath or whatever currency is popular and pick up new dirty old books. And there was always a lot of Pratchett to be picked up and enjoyed in the hammock or on a bumpy buss-ride.

Now I must admit that I kinda lost touch with the Discworld these last couple of years. Picked up most new books but it´s hard to keep any passion alive and it´s been almost 20 years now since my first trip to Discworld so for me it´s been more like reading about a distant friend on Facebook then diving back into that marvelous world I went to then. Still great fun, but not the thrill of new adventure if you know what I mean.

But nevertheless I am so very sad that he´s gone. With him goes an entire world, great characters that I have followed for so many years and realizing that there wont be a new Terry Pratchett-book coming out soon like there's always been feels a bit like the world ground to a halt and changed direction a tiny bit - its just not not the same anymore.
