I know everyones going mad for the Walking Dead, and I'm sure everyone who's raving about have very sound reasons, but I won't play it for one simple reason:
I don't play zombie games.

So my GOTY?
Mass Effect 3
lol you are missing out on what is one of the best games ever made. walking dead may have zombies in it but the zombies are actually not the focus of the game at all. i dont know how to explain to you but please dont have the mindset that you wont like it just because it has zombies in it. please try it atleast once and am sure you would love it.
everybody who has a heart and has emotions MUST play this game. hell everyone who is a HUMAN BEING should play this game
Ok, ok, next chance I get I'll have a go,
(Could ring me ma up now and tell her I'm skiping Christmas!)

walking dead and i doubt anyone who played it will ever argue that. story did fall apart at the end a bit which i would prolly blame on being rushed and the moral choices didn't really count for shit - like that time i told one guy to fuck off after spending the whole game trying to win him over and he ended up my best friend but even at it's worst it still beats "the princess is in another castle"

im pretty sure we have to wait for walking dead season 2 to top that story and even then it will have an up hill battle

special mention xenoblade chronicles cause you fight on the bodies of 2 giant robot existential gods

Even more Spec Ops.

Spec Ops is a story that's actually about something deeper than the events occurring on the surface, it actually has a theme which it addresses with a combination of gameplay and narrative, demonstrating how videogames can actually be used as a format to tell stories far better than anything before, without undermining its message with negligent design like Bioshock did.

Katawa Shoujo(that free interactive story that came from a 4chan picture about the disabled girls), Hanako's storyline or To The Moon (indie game). Probably the former because that story is so powerful it's made me really start to reevaluate my life choices and aims.

The Walking Dead had a great story, but it was elevated hugely by the gameplay, without it, it'd still be good, but To The Moon and Katawa Shoujo have stories that would have renown in any medium. I genuinely feel that it was almost a One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, To Kill a Mockingbird style moment. The Walking Dead would just be a fairly cliche story as a book.

Apart from anything else, they've incredibly furthered my understanding of disability and autism respectively and their impact stayed with me a long time after finishing the game. I wasn't in the same mood for hours after. The ending of The Walking Dead just made me uninstall the game from my computer (I'm okay with sad endings, I wasn't okay with how forced it ended up being for me. Particularly the bit where the balcony breaks. And not guaranteeing safety even in the teaser was pointlessly cruel) and ultimately I learn a little about parenthood and keeping strong in horrific situations, but that's nothing on the scale of the gut wrenching twist to the Hanako storyline
