I think I already posted in this thread. I don't know I've slept since then I'm sure. Tales of Vesperia is freaking awesome. Everything a JRPG should be and then some. I hope they make another Tales of game on the 360. Only JRPG I've been able to play through more than once and not get bored.
Yeah I suppose I should say a bit more about Vesperia seeing that it is my favorite console game atm, I mean I pretty much bought a 360 just for this one game.

Characters: This game has some really good characters, there's Yuri, who despite having long hair and being an anime male hero (which tend to look a little androgenous), is acted out as one of the most masculine and macho characters in a JRPG I've ever seen. In a genre where lead heroes are often whiners and full of doubt, Yuri is confident to the point of being outright cocky, decisive, and has a well developed personality from the moment you start the game. He is a vigilante, a chaotic good hero, who does what he knows is right, disregarding the law because he knows the law won't accomplish what is needed. His voice acting is great (in fact most of the English voice acting is really good in the game, which is apparently not that common to find). You can pretty much sum up Yuri with him about to get into a fight with an enemy saying "You want to fight then? Okay, bring it!" and leaving the battle saying "Yeah, I just beat you into next week"

Repede:
Repede is Yuri's dog. He's intelligent, carries a pipe in his mouth (but doesn't smoke), and fights using a dagger in his mouth. Yes, he's an animal in a JRPG, but he's not anthropomorphized, he doesn't talk, he's just your ordinary dog who happens to kick ass at fighting and despite not talking, he gets the gist of what's going on. Woof!

Flynn:
Flynn is Yuri's childhood friend and is an imperial knight (which Yuri left after being jaded about how restricted he was in being able to dole out justice, too many regulations and laws, criminals getting away because they're nobles, knights not caring about the lower quarter residents because they're poor, etc.), Flynn is also an idealist like Yuri but has stuck to trying to do things the lawful way (lawful good). Flynn agrees with the motives Yuri has but condemns his methods of dealing out justice, as it breaks the law and forces Flynn to try and arrest Yuri at some points in the game.

Raven:
Can't say too much about him because he's just loaded in spoilers, but he's awesome, he's a decade or so older than everyone else on the team so they call him "old man", which sometimes he resents and other times he brings it on himself. He's also a womanizer, he's generally really amusing to bring along as he flusters the ladies (especially Rita).

Estelle:
Some hate her because she's moe, and she is, but she's not a moeblob.. there's more to her and she's essentially the focus of the game (so far as I know). She's a noble lady who has never seen the outside world, been stuck in a castle all her life. She ventures with Yuri to find Flynn early in the game, and then well, she likes traveling so much that she keeps finding excuses to keep traveling rather than returning to the castle. She's a very talented healer (best one in the game) and frankly that talent makes her the focus of a lot of hostility and she ends up being very torn and indecisive (which some people really dislike, it sorta bothers me too but I can sorta understand why she's like that). She also has an obsession with high fives after being shown what one was by Yuri, and an obsession with Repede, who dislikes her in the beginning of the game but gets along with the other party members.

Rita:
She's the tsundere character, very brash and young, but a "genius mage", once you start getting her more powerful spells she really fucks shit up. She also has a mean backhand and likes to use it against Raven and Karol.

Karol:
I hate him but some people like him. He's an annoying kid that grows up during the course of the game, starting out as a coward but finding courage and responsibility along the way.

Judith:
she's a Krytian (just call it elf and be done with it) who fights with a spear. She's kinda emotionally distant but she likes to tease the men by wearing skimpy clothes and she's got a big rack (which is brought up several times). Her main draw for me is that she's an amazing aerial fighter. She has multiple jumps and can do a lot of her skills in mid air, which will juggle enemies for 50+ hit combos.

A few other things about the game that are awesome (aside from the combat system which I mentioned in another post):

Resource caches you find on the world map for synthesis materials (to create new stuff), sometimes you can find some rare stuff in the nodes and craft a sick weapon or something.

The item based skills system. You equip an item that has a skill on it, and you get the skill, after you earn so many Learning Points (from battles) while using that weapon, you'll permenantly learn the skills and can equip them while using another weapon. It allows for a degree of customization with your characters without making all of your characters essentially the same (the problem with materia and guardian forces in FF VII/VIII)

No random encounters, you see them all on the map (as with most tales games). If they catch you from behind they do a surprise attack on you, making your party members random. In dungeons you can use a tool to stun enemies and get a surprise attack on them, as well.

You can earn various titles for your characters, some of which give them alternate costumes. There are also attachments you can find or synthesize for your characters, you can give Yuri a black pimp hat (which he wears cocked slightly to the side which looks pretty pimp) for instance or Rita a pair of bat wings.

There are secret missions in boss fights, if you can figure them out and pull them off, not only do you get an xbox live achievement and a boost to your GRADE for the fight, but you also get additional rare items from the boss.

The GRADE shop is a thing in Tales games that adds replayability, allowing you to start a new game plus and then you buy certain upgrades (or downgrades) like either 10x experience gain or 50% experience gain, you might keep your artes, titles, recipes, skills, expand your capability to carry items from 15 of each type to 50, etc. You get GRADE points from doing really well in battles, like performing a burst or mystic arte or fatal strike will add to your grade, doing 10, 25, 50, 100, and I think 150 hit plus combos will increase your grade too, finishing a fight in 20, 10, 5, and 2 seconds or less will give bonuses to grade. Dying, using items, getting hit, and using elements the enemy is resitant to will decrease your grade.

Anyway, brilliant game.

erm not a big fan of them to behonest but out of all of them i would have to say kingdom of hearts because it was a cool idea missing disney characters with some of the characters from final fantasy and also because when you fight its in real time that prefer so much more than the take turns thing they normally do

I have only recently been getting into JRPGs. I've played a few Final Fantasy games, but not all the way through yet. I've been working on Final Fantasy VII which I have been enjoying quite a bit. I've also played Dragon Quest VIII, but it seems very generic, maybe it goes somewhere I don't know I'm not far enough. I am very fond of the Pokemon games and their simple yet effective "Start from scratch and work your way to the top" style.

Septerra Core is probably one of the best RPG's I've ever played, simply for the originality of its story. However, I'm not sure it's Japanese...
It's either American or Canadian (I can't figure out where Valkyrie Studios comes from, but Monolith is an American company, so...).

Even though it's not Japanese, though, it still follows many of the same gameplay and storytelling conventions, so it can be rightly called a JRPG. And I agree, the story was excellent (except the ending, which aside from the Selena and Doskias part, I hated).

Tales of Symphonia.
As you can tell by my avatar
Ah yes. Damn I hated fighting him. That was the only fight in the entire game I actually had to grind towards (I know winning the fight was optional, but still).

Still, it was all worth it when I finished him in simultaneously the most appropriate and inappropriate way imaginable: summoning Volt. Seriously.

Chrono Cross is a great game if you don't expect a game similar to Chrono Trigger. The first time I played, I wasn't particularly excited by it, so I quit. A few years laters I decided to play it again and now I love it. But really, your mileage may vary. There are really too many characters and most are not developed. There are a few awesome ones, though, and the soundtrack is fantastic (that's something I guess everyone can agree with).

Golden Sun is also good. Something I liked about it is that I never had to grind at any moment. Maybe I simply was having too much fun to pay attention, but I don't remember ever having to fight dozens of enemies to level up for a boss fight. I haven't played The Lost Age yet, though, but the data transferring feature is definitively nice.

I've only played a few JRPGs. I forget the name of one of em. You basically were invited to do (I think music) at a wedding or ceremony. The twist was every time you got to the wedding the time line got restarted all over again by the man who hired you. You had this one companion named Remy but I can't for the life of me remember the games name.
That's the exact one I'm trying to remember. If anyone knows please PM me or reply.
That game is called Ephermeral Phantasia, it wasn't all that great, the load times are awful, but it is an early PS2 RPG
THANK YOU! I was rather fond of that game in the 8th or 7th grade :(.

The world ends with you, it was very different, and I played before the ZP review. But the greatest RPG of all time in my opinion is the Disgaea series, it is funny, original, and has depths which most people can only dram of. Level cap of 9999 and a world in every item is just scratching the surface!

Not a big fan of JRPGs, so I'd have to say none. But that's my opinion. A lot of friends recommend the Final Fantasy series though.
As of some recent pondering I wouldnt call Final fantasy a "series" I mean None of them are Directly linked cept maybe FF7-FF7 derige of something or other and FFX-FFX-2(doesnt make sence to me its like saying last year i was 18 now in 18-2)

I like to think that each one is its own final fantasy

(speaking of whatever happened to the first fantasy? maybe evem the middle one =p)

More Recently for Me is Persona 3 some already said 4 but I haven;t played it just yet. First game in a long time where I've adored the characters and loved the combat even if it gets a little repetitive, it's immersive, also It's the only game in my recent memory where I have dropped 40 hour not even realizing it.
i have to agree with you on that one whole-heartedly. fantastic game. i'm playing it for the second time because i got the FES edition. the new campaign and new personas are well worth the price and even the effort you might have to go through to find it. it's not my favorite game of all time, but i can't remember when i had this much fun with a JRPG (i don't think the first Brave Fencer Musashiden counts as an RPG)

Two of my favorite JRPGS are Baten Kaitos: Origins and Skies of Arcadia: Legends.

Baten Kaitos: Origins has you, the player, take on the role as NeutralDrow put it, the heart of the cards. The player's relationship with Sagi, the protagonist of the game, affects what card comes next, and trust me when say this; it saved my characters many times over.

The difficulty starts pretty high because the amount of cards (the battle system of game has you using cards that have numbers on the lower right hand corner to attack, to make a combo, start with one number card and increase from there. Cards without numbers on the lower right hand corner are items. They cannot be used in a combo, start a combo, or combine with other items.) in your hand and deck are kinda small. But that is remedied by the fact that you can purchase upgrades that increase your deck and hand size. Special attacks are flashy and quite effective.

You also have a 6 cards that can be used in the field, and again, that amount will be upgraded to 18 when you pass certain milestones in the story.

The story is pretty interesting, filled with quirky characters and funny dialogue.

Skies of Arcadia: Legends is a port of the original Dreamcast game, with extra content. Kinda like Fable: The Lost Chapters for two different consoles. The game follows a group of pirates named Vyse, who wields dual cutlasses, Aika, who wields boomerangs, Fina, who attacks with her upgradable pet Cupil, Drachma, who attacks with his mechanical hand, Glider, who wields pistols, and finally, Enrique, who wields rapiers. The battle system is nothing special, but the way it's presented is interesting. When a battle starts, your party is lined up and the enemies are too. As soon as the first action is chosen the line are broken. Some of the in-game magic has the ability of hitting multiple targets depending on the enemies' position on the map.

The story is great with many twists that will make some people do a double take on their first time through. It happened to me, at least.

Final Fantasy 6 for the SNES is the best Final Fantasy I have played. It is amazing!

There is a GBA version with an extra dungeon and you can continue to play after you beat the last boss, in case you don't have an emulator, a SNES, or just want to play the extra dungeon.

JRPGS have far too many morales for me to get really into them.

FF series always seems to be about saving the world while you learn a valuable lesson...

Star Ocean however has enough stupid and weird things in it to actually be really good :D
