The only way I would invest in a games development is if I was being promised a slice of the profits, just the promise of a game itself isn't enough to get me giving a developer my cash (oh hooray, I paid you to make it and now I get to buy it!)
When you fund it you can usually get it for less than half the price with the money you used to fund it. All the games I funded I am getting for no additional cost (I funded what amounts to a fraction of what their retail price will be).
..and they may all suck and you never would have spent a penny on them.
What investment doesn't come with risk?

Oh, now it's an investment. I see, are going to see any of the profits?

It was always an investment. Investment =/= monetary profit. If I enjoy the game for a fraction of its retail price than it was a successful and sound investment.

$30 Doublefine Adventure, $75 Wasteland 2, $60 Shadowrun.

Really, the advertising got to me and I decided I would gladly like to be there for the whole development process. Especially Doublefine -- their first episode of the documentary came out and I really enjoyed it. I'm so looking forward to more. I like that there-for-the-whole-process feel, and as the Doublefine folks put it, either it will be a success or a fantastic failure. Either way I look forward to the journey. :)

$100 on Wasteland 2 since I want to see Black Isle Studios guys work together again and Chris Avellone&Obsidian deserve all the support. I think I backed the development because of the guys behind it, not as much because of the game itself.

Not mentioning I will probably rob a bank if there ever is a Planescape 2 kickstarter :).

That said I have no issues "abandoning" all new AAA RPGs and using the saved money for isometric RPGs created under the "classic" development mindset.

I funded the shit out of Shadow Run, I cannot wait for this game, so many many many happy hours spent tabletop gaming in that system.

Wasteland 2 and Shadowrun Returns. I'm really happy that Kickstarters are allowing these real sequels to old games to be made.

Maybe Age of Decadence could do a kickstarter. Anything to get that game to be released within the next century...

edit: nvm, apparently they're doing a sorta similar tiered pre-order thing on their own site, and the game's being released next year! Oh joyous day!

I happily splurged $250 into the Wasteland 2 fund. Nothing else has really piqued my interest so far (and there's always the option to buy them when they're complete), and I had the money since I'd changed my mind on an arcade PCB I'd been saving up for, so signed collector's box was an easy decision.

Definitely can't wait to see what Obsidian would offer if the Kickstarter craze keeps going, as I'll try to keep some leftover monies aside for them as well.

Pardon me if I'm misintrepreting what you said, but I'm pretty sure these projects aren't exactly going to be Crysis/Witcher 2 level (or whatever is the current benchmark in prettiest PC graphics) games.

Just $15 each on Doublefine Adventure, Wasteland 2, Shadowrun Returns, and $16 on Jane Jensen's Pinkerton Road.

I can't run pretty much anything. I have a laptop with an integrated graphics card.

I have yet to fund anything because there is no option to kickstart a project if you are Canadian. You can donate, but not put any of your own projects up. I recognize that it is not the users fault but I want to be able to put stuff up there too. I know many Canadians that feel that way and if we all send that message to Kickstarter then maybe that will change. Until then, I remain irritated.

Unfortunately the message has to be "make Canada an option and more money flows through you".

agreed on this. 15 bucks now? you betcha. i funded wasteland 2 after seeing some of the people they got working on it and what they want to accomplish with it, rather than having publishers stink it up, this game will be frickin sweet.

if not? 15 bucks is not a big investment, i probably got more than 15 bucks by far enjoyment out of it, so i'll be happy either way.

I would point out that in the case of both Doublefine, and Wasteland 2 they are developers that aren't just proficient at making games but they're masters of their field. Fargo founded and ran a little company called Interplay for 10 or so years which produced more then a handful of games that are still regarded as some of the finest ever, and are landmarks in Western RPGs.

None so far. There are some that i like to but fundings never seem to go well with college students.

Theres been mixed responses i thought KS "pledges" money until the goal date then everybody puts money in. Also having more options for otherwise dead ideas never hurt.

Speaking in a Video gaming sense many publishers wont take risks so KS is a nice ALTERNATIVE to that and help Developers get products that the targeted audience wants. Besides typically i see promotional offers for varying amount of Pledges and the typical $15-60 price range gives you the game with bonus to boot (equivalent of a Collector's Edition). From my understanding your just like others called it Pre-Pre-ordering the game.

I only heard the success stories of KS so it would be nice to have the whole spectrum on the idea of this website. (scam stories/failures/etc.)
