It's because of all of those tools buying iPhones when they could have got a proper bloody phone instead. Cretins.
Er, what? Oh, I see - you're one of Those People, who sit about telling people they suck when they buy things you, personally, t have a problem with. You're in the same crowd as people that mock anyone that buys a particular brand of phone, or TV, or console, or clothing, pretending you're some kind of superior creature because you didn't.

You little rant above is just depressingly pathetic. You sound like just another little hateful person who got it into their head that something is shit and decided to keep on hating it when the word around them were loving it. You're the same kind of guy that ranted about Harry Potter, Twilight, Spore, Mirror's Edge and anything remotely popular simply because people around you liked it and that shit you right off.

Let me let you in on a little secret: I bought an iPhone and I fucking love it. After several months of checking out reviews and technical specs, performing play tests with other phones and researching, I settled on the iPhone over any other device, based on educated decision. The iPhone suits my needs perfectly in every way. And that annoys the living fuck out of you.

You seem to think that I'm a hater of things because they're popular. You're way off the mark: in this case, I hate the iPhone because everybody's proclaiming it to be the Second Coming, when in fact, it's missing elements of smartphone design that have been around for years. More accurately, I hate the iPhone because it has the potential to change the smartphone, which was becoming stagnant and stale, and that potential is a good thing. What Apple are doing with the iPhone, making people think that a hermetically-sealed philosophy is a good thing in an era where more can be done by opening the phone up to electronic and software tinkerers.

Apple seems set to tell smartphone designers that omitting basic elements of the smartphone (expandable memory, easy transfer of data without a proprietary software package, interchangeable batteries and SIM cards) is alright, as long as the phone is flashy. That it's perfectly acceptable to force users to use their proprietary software if they want to do anything with the phone, instantly locking out Linux users and frustrating Windows users. As an open-source advocate, hermetically sealing your device is a one-way ticket to pissing me off.

So, no, I don't hate the iPhone just because it's popular; I hate it because they have such potential to change the smartphone, and yet waste it all on a device which has, as I see it, a lot of failings.

By the way, I don't hate other things because they're popular either. In terms of the examples you raised, I actually liked Harry Potter. I haven't seen Twilight, so I'm not fit to comment on it; I don't like what I've heard about the general aesthetic, and the "sparkling vampires" thing doesn't make any sense at all, but then, it's made for teenage girls, isn't it?

Spore was a case of a potentially good package made unremarkable by hype - not rubbish, just unremarkable. The thing which really nailed the coffin for that game was its draconian DRM; again, as an open-source enthusiast, that's just a way to piss me off immediately.

Mirror's Edge is the only one of those things that you've listed that I have a strong dislike for, and even then, it isn't because it's popular. It's for completely odd reasons, because I just really dislike the protagonist. I don't like the tattoo on her face, I think she has a peasant's name, and I don't like the shoes either. Apart from that, I'd say that Mirror's Edge was more remarkable because of its potential to the games industry - more an elaborate technical demonstration of the potential of first-person perspective games past the clichéd market - than its potential as an actual game.

Again, it isn't a case of disliking it because it's popular; it's what that popularity represents.
So you essentially hate the iPhone because it's clearly shaking up the stagnant industry, and you hate something that's good because you believe it represents or is related to some kind of techno-moral mumpsimus? Whilst I agree on open source software, and I also agree that the method of sealing the phones just makes replacing a battery more effort than it should be, that's really no true purpose for irrational hatred for a device which people clearly like.

And even if you want to keep your silly little hatred, do the rest of society and avoid ultracrepidating those of us that have made the decision to make the purchase. It's not your place to sit there and insult people that make the educated decision to purchase something you dislike. That doesn't make you some form of superior being - it just makes you a dick without valid opinion.

Funny, though - you're just like this woman at work. She hates homosexuals and foreigners because the bible tells her to out of some odd morality and not because she has any genuine experience. She also hates people that don't hate what she hates. Striking similarities.

what you're essentially saying to me is, "The open-source model is rubbish and I'd much rather have a device which is tied in to a proprietary software package which runs slowly and unpleasantly on Windows machines, and not at all on Linux machines. Also, I don't like having tactile or even haptic feedback, so I'll annoy everybody else by helping the adoption of touchscreen-only phone models into the market."
What I'm actually saying is that I don't give a fig about whether or not the software or hardware are open-source, or if I have to take it to an Apple store to replace the battery. Though you keep mentioning speed in your various rants, and there's no such issues with my iPhone. Perhaps you're imagining it? There's also no issues running it on my Windows machine, and no less than two Linux users at work have them too.

I also don't need tactile or haptic feedback. Oddly, I've got sufficient enough intelligence and sense to know when I'm doing something on my phone.

I have an LG Vu, and words cannot even describe how much I love it. I found a site dedicated to hacks for that specific phone, and went wild. I throw my micro sd card in there and I can watch movies, tv shows, whatever I want. I have the Iphone slide theme on it, with Mario backgrounds for each page. The streaming TV is nice, but the antennae seems like it's going to break off soon.

Some cheap Nokia something or other.

Which despite all the hype and bugging my friends keep throwing in my face I will never switch out for anything high tech like an iphone or a blackberry simply because I don't need all that extra stuff.

So until I have a more complicated life my phone serves it's two purposes that I really need it for: making calls and checking the time.

I retract my previous statement i am now highly amused by this thread.

I'm really supprised more people haven't said it but, iphone 3g. I bought it because Steve Jobs brought it down from the heavens himself...

Really I got it because it is a great combination of a blackberry and entertainment device. I had the Blackberry Storm when it first came out and hated it, most buggy phone I've ever seen. The best cell phone choice I ever made was switching to the iphone.

I've got the one that flips long ways, and side ways. Sorry, not sure of the name.

It's pretty convenient for texting and all of that.

There is an app that does Word and Excell, quite well in fact. As far as e-mail yes, it leaves room for improvement. It is also nice that it doubles as my GPS for free. If I learned anything from my blackberry storm though, (yes, I know that it is not a regular blackberry) it is that I would kill anything for stability in the OS. The storm crashed on me at least 4-5 times a day and took a good 5-10 minutes to restart everytime. Plus, I wasn't a fan of the clicking on the screen.

Edit: Also, if you explode with rage everytime someone mentions that they like it, maybe you should get a hobby to vent a bit.

I have a Samsung Hue 2 from Alltel

What I like the most about this phone is that it's cheap to purchase, it has nice big number buttons, a Camera that you can use the front screen to take self portraits on it, the battery lasts for about 3 days when you leave it on and it fits in your pocket, you can customize the color of it with interchangeable plastic Faceplates and Battery covers, but most importantly it's pretty rugged, I've had it for over a year and only had to change the faceplate once, now it looks like new!

Now... on to the negatives... I can't seem to figure out how to lock the phone even when it closes, even though it's a fucking flip phone, whenever I pull it out of my pocket to make a call, I find that it tends to take ass pictures of nothing but black, last I checked i had to go back and delete 400 of them!! and it also winds up doing something like being at the browser window which I don't even fucking use on those phones... thank god I don't get charged for being there when my phone is closed...

The newest Nokia 5800 Express Music.

Why?
Touch screen (I wanted that, ok?), high memory, good music player.
And the fact that I think it looks good, and yeah, I like that.
And also because Sony Ericsson has gone down the drain, nothing but trouble with the last 2 I had (W880 and w890 if you're curious).

There's a reason why people haven't said it on this website; it's because I explode with rage every time anybody claims that it's a good device.

But even if I weren't horribly biased against the iPhone, I'd be hard-pressed to call it a competitor to the BlackBerry. The whole thing about the BlackBerry is that it's a business device, especially good at the e-mail department. The iPhone lacks a lot of the business features of a BlackBerry, including the word-processor and office applications as standard. Where the iPhone excels, if anywhere, is the music-playing abilities. Apart from that, I consider it sub-par.

You're saying that I didn't do my research before disliking the iPhone? That isn't the case either.

I just think it's hilarious that people go "Oh, I hate DRM in games", yet, when it comes to a device laden with it, they have no qualms whatsoever. The DRM in Spore led to a widespread internet protest against it.
There's a big difference between Spore, which lets you buy the game once, install it a few times and then you have to buy it again (essentially renting it) and an iPhone, which is practically as customisable as you like with apps. Fine, so it's sealed up and needs to be taken to a store for a battery, and doesn't have expandable memory? So what? As you can plainly see, there's an incredible number of people that like the iPhone. To date, the only people I have come across that dislike the iPhone are people that seem to have some kind of irrational hatred of Apple or Steve Jobs, a hatred of all things popular and yourself. You, Sir Ragealot, are a minority wallowing in a sea of useless and petty hatredy for something that has brought the world at large a feeling akin only to that of kittens and candy.

Make love to me, Steve Jobs! Oh wait, there's an app for that.

Hey I just said they're military grade MATERIALS. But that actually surprises me, I've taken the thing and just whipped it across my apartment and the only side effect was that it started ringing at me when noone was calling.

I have no freaking clue what a model number is, all I have is a brand: Motorola.

If forced to guess at a model, I'd say something along the lines of the "Cockroaches-will-use-this-after-nuclear-holocaust" model.
