1) It used to be Weezer. Why it isn't is what I'll talk about in the second question. Now I'm not so sure. Toss up between Moby, Radiohead, Ratatat, and Mumford and Sons.

2) They used to appeal to losers like me, having crappy jobs, dicking around in the garage, and just having shitty luck with the ladies. Now their ego has grown so high that they've lost all sense of what they used to be, especially the singer, Rivers Cuomo. Rivers, seriously, man... what the fuck happened?

The other stuff? It'd take too long to explain.

3) Say it Ain't So by, you guessed it, Weezer.
4) Good question, I have no idea.
...
Okay, if I had to choose, rock, electronica, a little hip hop/rap here and there, anything indie.

5) I used to really love rock, but now there are hardly any good rock bands out today that aren't metal (and I hate metal [small](no offense to those who love it)[/small]). I listen to a lot of electronica, though. It's pretty damn easy to groove to and there's a lot of easy to miss details in most electronica songs that I love discovering. Hip hop and rap ain't too bad, but my problem with those genres is that it's become way too self absorbed. I also like a lot of indie stuff, that can be pretty damn interesting.

Just to create a survey and then write an essay explaining the steps we took, our results, etc. I chose to do this because I figured it'd be far easier than going out and asking 30 random people in person (30 is the minimum amount of people we have to survey). And of all the forums I frequent this one tends to have my favorite community. And with that I'm off for the night, hope that answered your question well enough.
Ah ok. makes sense. I was just curious. I look at the more sociological aspects of humans rather than psychological so it intrigues me when someone looks more psychologically at people.

Hello everybody, I have to conduct a survey for my psychology class so I decided to make the people here at the Escapist my target group. As you may have guessed by the title I'm looking at what genres of music are the most popular around here. So here are the questions:

1. What's your favorite band/artist?

2. Why are they you're favorite?

3. What's your favorite song?

4. What genre/s do you tend to listen to most often?

5. And why?

I know the questions kinda suck but I'm not great at thinking of questions for stuff like this. Lol
1. Favorite Band: Electric Light Orchestra.
2. Why? Because where I thought the Beatles were merely okay in the pantheon of British Bands, ELO had a sound that was unique (still is), and every song they do is magic, and if it isn't, it should be considered close to it. Also, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City made me love them.
3. I literally cannot think of one song I love over the other. I really can't. If I had to say something:
It's actually two songs, but they compliment each other so well, they should be considered one.
4. I guess people would consider me indie rock, but In reality, anything that sounds like ELO is good by me. So Rock (Classic Rock Sound, for more modern bands), and sometimes rock with bombastic sound (My Morning Jacket's "If You Touch Me I'll Scream Part 2").
5. Because the sound is enough like Classic rock that if I turned it on for my parents, they would have thought they were great bands.

1. David Bowie.

2. The effect "Space Oddity" had upon me the first time I heard it (Aged 13) simply cannot be quantified.

3. Space Oddity...Or maybe "A Farmer in the City (Remembering Pasolini)"?

4. Metal, punk, folk, electronica, prog, punk-cabaret, dark cabaret...the list goes on and on.

5. Because varieties the spice of life? I listen to different music to suit different moods/activities. Although, in general I'd say I listen to metal 60% of the time and everything else the rest of the time. \m/

1. What's your favorite band/artist?

The Cramps

2. Why are they you're favorite?

I love the old rockabilly sound and the way Lux Interior sings gives the music a whole new edge. It's unique and awesome.

3. What's your favorite song?

Either Creature from the Black Leather Lagoon or Bikini Girls with Machine Guns

4. What genre/s do you tend to listen to most often?

I listen to a whole host of genres. I grew up in the 80's so it was all metal all the time but then I got into punk (actual punk like Bad Brains, FEAR, the Germs, and TSOL, not that pop punk bs). I've always liked and enjoyed classic rock, Mo Town, industrial and so on. There really isn't any specific genre I don't listen to. Hell, I even listen to some rap (but more sarcastically than anything else).

5. And why?

I suppose I listen to a large variety of music because I get bored of one genre too quickly. It used to be I could listen to metal day in/day out for years, but after a while I just got bored with it. I suppose it could also be that the genres have become so diverse and have changed quite a bit. Take punk for example: There are very few true "punk" bands anymore. They are all like AFI and Green Day who claim they are "punk" and are the furthest thing from it. See "Decline of Western Civilization" for true punk. Anyways, I guess I just have become more interested in "unique" sounding bands lately. I suppose I'm tired of the same old Pop sensation bs that is piped onto the radio non-stop (I'd say that plays on MTV but that would age me more than I'd care to admit).

So yea. I'm old. New music blows. Get off my lawn.

!) What's your favorite band/artist?

Modest Mouse

2) Why are they you're favorite?

I draw a lot of inspiration in my bass playing from Eric Judy and I love the words that flow from Issac Brock's mouth. They also have a great way of making albums feel like cohesive wholes and the songs themselves explore topics that I'm really into, such as despair, death, (absence of) God, angst and ambiguity.

3) What's your favorite song?

4 & 5) What genre/s do you tend to listen to most often? Why?

Chillout the most since I'm a very passive relaxed person;
Indie Rock because it really speaks to me;
80's/90's Alternative because the music is so darn good;
Dance/Electronica since I can absolutely adjust my mood with it as if the song I choose is a Batch script for my brain;
Comedy Rap because I like two types of feelings: one is jovial and comedic and the other is somber, bordering on depressed;
and finally Punk, particularly more melodic Punk because it sounds great, not as aggressive as hXc and is politically charged, which is good because I am really passionate about politics.

1) A Day To Remember.
2) Their blend of pop and metalcore is perfect and all of their songs are full of energy.
3) So many to chose from but probably Come What(ever)May by Stone Sour.
4) Metalcore and Hardcore but I enjoy artists from most genres.
5) I like heavier music with a mix of clean vocals and screams.

1. Lucero
2. They are THE hardest working band in the industry today. 300+ shows a year, all on a wage slightly less than a substitute teacher makes every year. They do it, not because they want to make money, not because they "love the music", but because it's what they were born to do.
3. At the moment?
4. alt.country or Metal. Strange, I know.
5. As a guitarist, I appreciate how technical metal can be. As a blue collar southern boy, I appreciate country music, as long as it's honest, real, and not pop-country. I appreciate good songwriters.

1). John butler Trio (pre new band, not a big fan of april uprising)
2). John butlers music just resonates with me, on top of that he inspired me to become a musician, even though I have influences from many different artists (from periphery to George Benson) I always draw the most inspiration from JBs music.
3). Probably Ocean by John Butler... first song I ever learned how to play, took me months but I eventually got it. Birdcage by Gackt runs a close second.
4). At the moment a whole mix of stuff, if I looked at me top 25 most played it consists of Paramore, Animals as leaders, Jaco Pastorious, Antonie Dufour, Opeth, Gackt, Newton faulkner and some Katy Perry and Coheed and Cambria lol.
5). Because I refuse to limit my listening to one genre, I find I get influenced very easily (in terms of writing music) by whatever I listen to at the time, so I try to listen to as many different artists as possible.

1. Streetlight Manifesto

2. Those horn parts always get to me. They just sound incredible to me, plain and simple.

3. We Will Fall Together

4. Ska, Rock, Jazz, Blues, Big Band

5. I tend to prefer music that has instruments that require you to play. I know that technical devices used today count as instruments, but I just prefer what could be considered more traditional ones.

1. What's your favorite band/artist?
I don't have a "all time favourite", but mostly "favourite at the time". And right now, I gotta say it's Opeth.

2. Why are they your favorite?
(Fixed your grammar there, "you're" means "you are")

Their newest record is just fabulous, and I do like more or less everything they've made (Watershed probably being my least favourite). They are ever-changing, they're complex while being atmospheric, the lyrics are poetic, they are very talented as players as well as composers.

3. What's your favorite song?
At this moment I've been listening to this one a lot:

4. What genre/s do you tend to listen to most often?
Progressive metal and progressive rock. Some genres I listen less often are Death Metal, Jazz and Folk (as in Neil Young etc). I know, kind of lackluster.

5. And why?
I don't know, I like Prog because I like complexity without sacrificing atmosphere, and that's how I see progressive music.

1. It's a tie between Blink-182 and UnderØath, most of the time.

2. Blink-182's sound and song-writing has probably matured and evolved more noticeably than any other band I've listened to, and while most people would say UnderØath is the very definition of "mainstream" "post-hardcore", that's part of why I like them so much. Just because they're "mainstream" doesn't make them bad, and I like the way they layer their instruments. There's more going on in their songs than most people typically pay attention to.

3. That's hard to say. I can't really pick any specific song, but I'll pick a moderate list of the songs I've listened to the most in the last few months:
"In Oceans" by Agraceful
"CAFO" by Animals as Leaders
"An Ocean Between Us", "Parallels", and "The Blinding of False Light" by As I Lay Dying
"Neighborhoods" (Album) by Blink-182
"Me and my Enormous Spiritual Erection" by The Color Of Violence
"You Be Tails, I'll Be Sonic" by A Day To Remember
"Unomia", "Eingya", and "Caesura" (Albums) by Helios (Moniker for Keith Kenniff)
"Bullet" and "Pour Me" by Hollywood Undead
"Blue" and "Clockwork" by Hourcast
"Faust", "Holographic Sight", and "Antebellum" by The Human Abstract
"Moonlight Sonata - Adagio Sostenuto" and "Fur Elise" - Ludwig van Beethoven
"Ø (Disambiguation)" (Album) by UnderØath
"Mowgli" by Veil of Maya
"King" by Weezer
"Yoda" by 'Weird Al' Yankovic
"Alla Turca" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
"Casanova Rodeo" by The Word Alive

4. Though I despise the current method for categorizing musical genres, I would say that what I listen to most often would be "Post-Hardcore" or "Metalcore", closely followed by "Hard Rock", "Alternative Rock", "Ambient", "Instrumental", and the various sub-genres of "Metal" that are simply labyrinthine in nature.

5. Why? Well, because I enjoy music. I like to attempt broadening my horizons and the only genres that typically give me pause are in the vein of "Rap", "Hip-Hop", and "Country". There are other genres that I don't actually actively listen to but do not mind, such as "Jazz", "Pop", "Blues", and many others that I can't be bothered thinking of this late at night.

as of current, my favourite is a solo artist named Origa. Shes a russian singer, whose signed to a company in Japan. She sings, and speaks fluent Russian, Japanese and Latin. I love the sound of her voice and the power behind her music. I feel a strong attachment to her music, although its for unknown reasons. My favourite song is currently Обещания or Obeschaniya or Promise.

Дa, обещания, обещания..
Только обещания, обещания, обещания..
Oбещания, обещания..
Только обещания, обещания, обещания..

included for no other reason than to mess with peoples browser text display :p

Mostly, my favourite genre is trance. I love the beat and the hypnotic tones, my favourite thing to do is light a couple sticks of incense, put on some Armin van Buuren and take a nap, it produces some trippy dreams for some reason and i absolutely fucking love it!

1. What's your favorite band/artist?
Yes. J/k but that changes about every week. There are waaay too many. So...Coldplay?

2. Why are they you're favorite?
Can listen to an entire album without thinking "meh, wish I would have bought the couple songs I wanted individually."

3. What's your favorite song?
Viva La Vida. No, Talk. Stop asking hard questions!

4. What genre/s do you tend to listen to most often?
Adult alternative, alternative rock, techno, some indie, instrumental.

5. And why?
Usually not offensive, all have a good beat/rhythm to carry the song. If I can't tap my foot in time, bob my head, and I don't get goosebumps then it has no place on playlist.

1. Arctic Monkeys

2. They know how to write some amazingly catchy tunes, Alex Turner's lyrics can be both hilarious, true and heartbreaking all at the same time. The drummer is a beast and like me, they're from the UK.

3. Still Take Me Home - Arctic Monkeys

4. If I'm not listening to guitar bands (Arctic Monkeys, Libertines, that sorta thing) then I'll probably be listening to electro, the louder the better. (Noisia, Chase & Status, Daft Punk, Circus Records artists). That said my iTunes ranges from things like what's mentioned above to underground American hip-hop, game soundtracks, alternative music like the Gorillaz and relatively unknown solo artists like James Blake. Most of my music interests depend on an interesting beat (being a drummer myself).

5. When it comes to electro I enjoy having something to dance too and with loads of the artists these days expanding into fields like House or Dubstep there's more and more unique sounds coming out. Plus there's nothing like being in a field with 60,000 other people listening to the Chemical Brothers.
