Windows 7. Because It works, and everything else is for douchebags, those hardcore nerds or people living in the past.
Windows 7 as the base operating system on my laptop, Windows XP as a virtual machine for access to all the features that 7 removed.

Windows Vista, I really don't see why people hated it so much. I've had it a few years now and haven't had too many problems :p

Edit:

Vista Ultimate 32bit

Vista 64-bit, though I wish I had XP. I hate windows 7, and intend to switch to linux instead of upgrading.

Server: CentOS x64 (will also virtualize at least another CentOS and possibly a ClarkConnect)
Functionality, stability, security and unbeatable price.

Gameing rig: Win7 x64 Ultimate
Only windows install I have. Will dual-boot with Ubuntu for media except games

Laptop: Fedora 13 i686
32bit to support my attempts at getting my coding skills back up and running. A few things I'm testing out don't support 64 bit yet.

windows 7 is miles better than Vista, and on the 64 bit stuff it's better than XP. So as soon as you push past 3GB RAM you want Win7 x64. Linux is great, but not really a system for gaming =(

Steam did this survey, check their site for lots of data.
True; but then there's people that, like myself, use one OS for most gaming and another for everything else and steam would only register the gaming OS.

Linux runs older games better than windows7, thanks to wine, but you just can't beat windows for modern gaming yet. It would be fantastic to see more linux friendly games but even ubuntu hasn't got the market penetration for it to be realistic yet.

People hate it cause the subsystems use way more resources than they need. Switch to Win7, and you'll have more CPU and RAM available for programs

Ubuntu 10.04. It's the most user-friendly Linux distribution and is good for dipping your toe in the water before you get one of the more `hardcore' distributions.

But without the Linux friendly software, Linux won't get the market penetration. There are a few other weaknesses in the software selection for Linux as well as games. Highend technical software (CAD especially) is severly lacking =(

But, most of the current generation Windows CAD software packages are actually ported Unix software =P

Windows 7. Because it came with my laptop and I couldn't be bothered changing it to XP. It works, I guess, but the backwards compatibility sucks. Most of my older games don't work on it :(

As mentioned earlier: set up a dualboot with Ubuntu and use wine to run the older games =)

I use Windows Vista Home Premium, not out of choice of course, it came packaged with my laptop and I haven't been bothered enough to change it.
