What kind of story would you write?

Having written my own fantasy novel (not yet published), I've sometimes wondered what other people would write about if they wanted to make a story.

So I ask you, fellow escapists, if you were to write a story, what would that story be about?
Would it be gritty-grounded-in-reality, or fantasy?
Would it be romantic?
Would it be poetic? (just assume "poetic" is in whatever context you're familiar with)
Would it be a simple story or a confusing mess of plot twists and betrayal?
Would there be a message or moral to the story?
Would it be based on real events, or just stuff you made up?
Would it be light hearted, or tragic?

What would you write?

EDIT: no, you don't have to explain everything about the story, just what kind of story it would be.

My last attempt, and still rather current is based on the fall, and shattering of the Mongol Empire, as seen from the eyes of an outsider as the individual factions break apart and vie for power. But instead of returning to their own lands, the major two vie for supreme power within the vacuum.

A tragic, non-romantic, non-poetic piece of nonsense I made up filled with random twists in a fantasy world that makes no sense with no moral, because moral is boring.
It'd be about a turtle with magical powers. Turtles are cool like that. Yeah.

High fantasy. I'm currently writing a trilogy very slowly. Confusing plot, with a love triangle, and magic.

My working NaNoWriMo title is "The Freedom of Snake Plissken." I've already worked out the key plot points, so it should almost write itself. I hear John Carpenter already has a script for a prequel film, but I think I can do better.

My follow-up would be totally unrelated novel about an incursion of ancient religions upon the modern world. Its a story that I've been wrestling with for some time, because I know jack about the occult and I really don't care to just make it up. The first book has a trippy cliffhanger ending where I go insane.

Edit: I had the idea of writing a Star Wars novel, but Lucas Arts has that all sewn up with who writes what books, and when.

Using your list:
A grounded-in-reality fantasy tale based on contrived real events, with a tragic romance and a confusing mess of plot twists.

I typically write in a narrative style that many would consider unnecessary and confusing, with frequent shifts of perspective and a general feeling of doom that hangs over the protagonist's head throughout the entire story. I also like to open a story from directly beyond the fourth wall and segue into the actual story, not unlike the old Twilight Zone episodes.

That's not to say that the entire thing would be one long depressing grit-o-'thon. Most of the time I insert a fair amount of dark humor into my stories as well, when they happen to be "tragic and gritty" or whatever else you'd call it.

If I were to write a novel, it would be a somewhat romantic fantasy novel ending in tragedy. It wouldn't be a huge mess of twists and betrayal, but there would most certainly be some of it. I've always wanted to write about the extremes we go to for love... and it's easier when there are wizards involved.

I'd write my first series to be painfully bad, ala Twilight, just so I can sell millions of copies and get a lot of fans. Then I'll pull some 'Atlas Shrugged' philosophical shit on them that'll make them more intellectual. Or make my sales bomb.
I'd probably pull something like this.

Floofy, unrealistic, a bit of wish fulfillment...

Then I'd pull a twist ending that would be a total slap in the face for the kinds of people who fixate on that kind of stuff.

I don't mean to, its just that whenever I try to come up with stories, they all go out of control and end pretty dark...

English major here. Currently with 70+ stories started.

The ones I have open in Word are:
- a high fantasy with magic, a tad bit of romance on the side, and a metric hell ton of plot twists and betrayals
- a historical novel based around the conquests of Alexander the Great, as seen by one of the Companion Cavalry
- an epic poem in iambic tetrameter

...You could say that I like to dabble.

i am in the middle of writing something; it's about the relationship between the main character, the rest of the story, and me, the author.
it's science fiction.
not romantic at all.
define poetic.
mostly simple, at least one small plot twist each chapter.
it plays with the concept of free will from various perspectives.
considering the premise, that's actually a really complicated question. it's a story about me writing the story, and the main character trying to validate his independence from me. so i really am writing the story, and everything that happens in the story really was written. >.> though everything that happens inside the story is all made up.
light hearted, for the most part.

If I wrote something, I certainly wouldn't talk about it to total strangers on the internet, because someone better at storytelling than me might be able to publish a derivative work.

And, I have written a few things, and submitted one that was rejected for publication.

Today.

Amazingly though, I'm not crushed about it.

Kind of writing one already (been a while since I decided to write anymore of it).
It's kind of a sci-fi/fantasy story in a really loose sense.

Inspired by 2 or 3 anime, and I'd really love to finish it eventually.

Probably a Fantasy story. I did actually create a few original characters years ago and did start writing a number of stories about them that I never did actually finish. I really should take up writing again. Reading too, for that matter. I could write much better when I read.

Gritty-grounded in fantasy, unromantic and non-poetic, a confusing mess of simplicity, amoral made up, and I guess I'd play Cerebus Rollercoaster with it. (tvtropes be your friend)

Assuming I could write an original story. I can't for shit. When I get an assignment in school to write one, I just cheat, and read other peoples' stuff, then throw something together. I'm pretty good with essays and criticism though. Or at least all the teachers lie that to me.

Something quirky. Like an intergalactic battle between breakfast foods with tons of technobabble that uses food puns as terminology.

It would be fantasy.
It would be a romance in both senses of the word.
Probably not poetic.
It would be simple.
Indeed, there would be a message. By the way, I think the word you're looking for is 'Aesop'.
It would be made up.
Definitely light-hearted.

It would be about a hunter, jaded and skilled in the art of combat, and a princess, pure and gifted with her words, exploring the land. The jaded hunter learns how to not be jaded and the princess enjoys herself a bit more.

That's it in a nutshell.
