so i was playing FF13 and liking it, i have never bought a RPG before and i got it for 10bucks. (99SEK)
now the thing that made me go fuck no im not going to play this anymore is one thing, one attack:
DOOM.
doom is a BS attack that i found bosses could use, doom is a attack that once used will set a timer that kills the main charackter (thus game over)
it was annoying because i could slowly wither down the bosses health, then DOOM.
it dont want to look for a guide for every boss yust because they can insta kill me.

so what am i doing wrong? am i playing it wrong or is it yust badly designed?

I thought that when they cast doom it gave you a certain amount of turns in which to kill you. Other than that you could just grind like hell and become super high level in hoping you might survive it.

Well if you could slowly kill every monster easily, then the game would be long and boring and too easy. Doom is meant to force you to act fast and kill fast.

If you're talking about the Eidolon boss fights, you don't need to grind at all for that. Those battles are about finesse and strategy. Sure, the fights are a tad daunting at first, but it's really not that hard once you figure out the best approach for each. (protip: use scan).

So you know...

If you never bought a RPG and bought FF XIII...

You still have not bought a RPG. FF XIII is so far from a real rpg it's sad. And no just cause you can level up doesn't mean it is a role playing game...

I stopped play because of no party control, moronic plot, and cookie cutter characters made from all the previous FF games jumbled into mishmashes of cliche's.

If you didn't grind enough when they cast doom on you then it will be either impossible or take forever to beat them. You could just go for their weakness when you look at their stats, then it becomes much easier. But yeah, you have to be almost on their level when they cast that, welcome to RPGs and the fun ride of level grinding.

Actually, the only bosses who use Doom (if I recall properly) are the Summons.

Basically, the summon wants you to use certain abilities on it. You aren't supposed to kill these enemies, you're supposed to fill the guage to allow you to make the enemy into an ally. This means that you need to use that character's (whoever accidently called up the summon) main class feature. If it's healing, then heal your party even if they aren't hurt. If it's a Sentinel, then keep provoking and defending. Spam whatever that ability is until the guage fills and then press the button that ends the battle (I think it was Square on the PS3) by making the summon yours.

Those fights aren't real fights - killing the summons isn't a good thing, since you want it so you can summon it later. And ride around on it. The Doom is to prevent you from actually killing the boss, and to force you to use the correct ability (which may take a few tries to figure out).

If you can scan, try that - sometimes it will tell you what attack the boss wants you to use.

Final Fantasy XIII's combat is all about speed. The bosses will cast Doom only if you are taking too long to defeat them, and the timer gives you basically a kick in the ass and tells you to hurry up and try to kill me! speech.

..Also, you are probably not high enough level.

I wish I could have just watched it as a movie and knocked off the gameplay
Considering the gameplay within it was very basic and they missed out my favourite elements of an FF game.

edit: well maybe not that basic. But it still wasn't the best.

I ususally do this, just muscle through, besides it feels more awesome when you fight a boss and kill them first time. What usually happens is you've either levelled enough in the previous section to kill the boss first time, otherwise you die, and then have to linger around just before the boss, and go the next 1-2 levels up, retry, win or lose then if lose repeat.

I stopped playing because I got stuck and busy, but it was actually nice in some ways, ok ok, the way they tried to streamline the attacks might piss some people off, but hey, it was so much better than 12 or 11 or 10, maybe 9, but it'd be hard pressed to say it tops 4, 5, 6 or 7 (or even 8).

EDIT: Also, the party system of interchangable group types and leveling system is class leading, I love Mass Effect 2 for example, but the levelling in this puts that to shame.
