I don't know what made it so great but I think the fact it was the first game to truly master the whole 3D concept, it burrowed its way into our brains and will never leave. To this day people still compare modern games to Ocarina of Time, to me this is a testimit of the best game of all time, we are still trying to find a game that's better. It is the bar we set our sights on "If this game is half as good as Ocarina of Time..." this is what i say in my head so often. I personally don't think the a game will be able to beat it until we have the first virtually reality game that truly masters it, like Ocarina of Time did with 3D.

At the time, everything about the game was revolutionary...mainly the game's scope. Prior to OoC, no game(could be wrong) had as expansive, realized and alive a world. That may have faded in hindsight, but the game also represents a huge part of this generation's childhood. Looking back, the world isn't as impressive and the story is standard, but for me (and I'm sure many others) the early memories of OoC of time can never be taken away. It doesn't hurt that the game has outstanding level design, and wonderful music and boss fights.
Can't think of much to say beyond this, it was simply the best game of its time.

Mainly nostalgia and the fact that it was many fan's first Zelda game that they've played. You can also add the fact that it was the first 3D Zelda game.

The fans.....that made it popular....because they wont give up on the gorram franchise
Well said. Fans are essentially what makes somethbing popular.

But for the game;s defense, it did have many revolutionary ideas and took a few risks that turned out to be for the best. And people wonder why Miyamoto is a god

Open world game play, Great level design, tonnes of hidden areas in said open world, originality, being able to fast travel, traveling, side quests that are actually fun, good story line, perfect atmosphere and immersion, and it didn't have to rely on cheap novelties like blood, gore, sexuality, swear words, or crude humor to be good.

I don't know. I tried playing it once and couldn't get into it. It seemed pretty average to me, but then again this was years after it originally came out.

Still, I think Super Mario 64 was the best game that came out on the N64.

For its time, it had a deep story, good graphics, an expansive world, etc.
It became more free than the original Zelda games, while retaining that sort of puzzle/strategy feel.

I would have to 100% agree with anyone who says it's the greatest game ever.
I myself have beaten it 15 times, going on 16, and planning to beat it annually UNTIL I DIE.
Somehow, I never get bored of it. I don't know why.
