Doesn't surprise me, I am one! I'm 44 with three kids 18 years, 15 years and a ten month old baby. Of course my teens do say that their friends want to live with us cos I encourage gaming and their mums are 'boring'!
Awesome! There should be a group for you guys or something! You are a pretty rare breed. All my mates used to say the same thing about my mom.
Nothing beats sitting there while your mother points a light-gun at the zombies on screen screaming, "Die, fucker!" Yeah... I love my mom. Haha.
Why should there be a group?? Can't I stay here with you all ;-)? Women in their 40's want to talk about cross stitch and crap like that :-O
Sounds like your mum is my kind of woman :) Also gamer moms appreciate a gamer's need to game and tend to help out if this happens..
''That game is out next week, ma, and I don't have the money yet''! (cue sad, yet hopeful face of teen)

Ok, point taken. We'll let you stay here, but I think you should have your own website too! So you can talk about how your kids are pissing you off because they are hogging the consoles.

I'm a terrible "Gamer". I usually love every game, book, and movie I come across. Let me give you some perspective, I love both MW2 and Operation Flashpoint 2. I also enjoyed "terrible" games such as Gears of War and Crysis, which are often called shit by "Gamers".

I'm sorry but if you've never played pong
i have
and if you've never played a snes game with the console
i also have, the original zelda link to the past, and something weird called equinox
then you can call yourself a gamer all you want but if you go into a conversation about games with me without feeling anxious at the mention of battletoads/megaman/contra then you can gtfo. tbh I would consider someone a true gamer even if they've never played anything past the atari. I'll admit I'm quite the elitist old school or no school type when it comes to games and todays generation of "gamers" quite depresses me.
this isnt directed to you, tetron, but would people stop answering the thread based on the thread title?
im trying to discover what prerequisites, if any, people think a gamer should have to be allowed into the elitist club
[HEADING=1]I GET THE PICTURE, A GAMER PLAYS GAMES[/HEADING]
i dont need 20 people telling me the same thing, i am actually trying to work something out here
It's the truth, though. There is no such thing as an elite gamer and anyone who thinks of themselves as one based on the games they've played is fooling himself. What you're asking people to do is to identify their pretensions about gaming.

You are not a Gamer unless you beat HALO 3 on LEGENDARy with your TOES, beat all the MGS' on the highest difficulty, without killing anyone or ever being seen and tranquilizing all the bosses. Beat Megaman 2 without dying (lol), build the big goron sword in Zelda: Ocarina of Time MASTERQUEST, Got every achievement in WOW, AND finished Final Fantasy VII without using Materia.

In seriousness, you are a gamer if you enjoy games and make it a hobby. Buying a Wii and playing it once a month with the neighbors doesn't count. Basically, I would say if you have ever been to a midnight launch of a game and bought a game there (not just tagged along to make fun of all the nerds) you are a gamer. That's just a guarantee. I am sure there are gamers who have never went to a midnight releases.

Is it bad if one of my friends has actually done all of those (except the first). I attempted them all after him and failed, but had fun doing it. I never knew you could beat MGS1 in 3 hours if you skip cut scenes and he took less than 20 mins to beat Megaman 2, it took me an hour to beat the one boss.

I pre-order them and show up after I wake up, so much easier : )

I think it's more of a cultural thing than simply how many games you've played.
This. Anybody can play a lot of games, my opinion is that true gamers are the ones who can spew pointless facts about games to anyone who may be even mildly interested.

playing a variety of games AND enjoying gaming alone, not only with your friends. also not pirating games. if you pirate games you are a filthy pirate and nothing more.

If you find Halo bland, enjoy using physic guns, play portal and find it amazing, play old school games not because you are a fanboy but because you legitimately like trying new things!

People who refuse to classify other people as gamers because they don't like the games they like is just stupid.
On the other hand, being classified as a Gamer doesn't do you any good, so why strive to be one?

Anyone who plays computer games.

Now to be more then a causal gamer someone has to play games on a regular basis and have some sort of emotional investment in them (such as making them a hobby as opposed to just playing one once in a blue moon and not really caring about anything beyond one game).

it all falls into subcategories from there.
