So what is it that makes someone a good video game player? What about them makes them good? I would like to know what you think would make you or anyone a respectable, and likeable video game player.

Well see there is a limit to this, I know some people aren't as good as me but I don't say anything or make fun of them. But then there are the guys who get a lucky kill and then teabag me and I just have to go out of my way to kill them 20 times before the game ends. Doesn't matter how much you swear at people or rub it in their faces when they win, you do actually have to be better at them to be able to boast.
But I see a good player as someone who works as a team, as I mostly play quite team dependant games. (L4D, TF2, CoD4 SD, Quake CTF)
If a player could save another player but take his life for the benefit of the team (jumping on a 'nade when he had 1hp to save someone with 100hp for example), and one that doesn't just worry about his stats looking good, a player who gives covering fire, doesn't just go solo every game and works with the people around him.
They are examples of a good player, there are millions more, but I don't think it comes down to anything that you say over a mic. (that comes under what makes a dickhead)

Most of the responses seem to be multi-player based. Since I'm more of a single-player kinda guy, I guess what makes a good player is someone who can learn and execute complex maneuvers, and not simply 'button-mash' their way through a game. A good sense of strategy and planning helps too.
"Come on guys, let's all follow the rules and have a nice friendly game."
A good player needn't necessarily be someone as upbeat as this, but certainly someone who does not talk trash, does not conduct themselves in an unsporting manner and is to curtious to others in both victory AND defeat.
