I like RPG's where you don't have to watch your characters summon some stupid monster for three hours. Or travel endless miles of terrain with your only direction being some incredibly vague map, and some bullshit hint a wizard gives you about "following the trees".while having to constantly fight random battles every five seconds.

I'm just not a big fan of JRPG's in general. (Although I adore the Paper Mario series and Chrono Trigger.)

What a revelatory thread, I'm inspired.

EDIT: I posted this when your statement said (no text).
ok so thats def a lie... cause this is the first thread i have ever posted on and to me rpg games are the core of what all games should be based off of.

what i mean is the basic elements that make up a great rpg. 1: epic story (should be the focus of every great game) 2: Gameplay (and yes folks i know most rpgs are lacking in this department aside from the late demon souls and earlier titles like the zelda series actually i could go on and on... anyway there are good things and bad things in every game even the ones i luv but the great things that made me love them ,even if it is just one really awesome thing that sets it apart from every other game like the story line in FF7 yes i know pretty much everything else was mediocre and im probly gonna be branded a fanboy the rest of my life cause i said it but damn it man it was the first rpg that actually put a tear in my eye. 3: freedom the sense of freedom with a bit of do whatever the fuck i want when i want thats what i luved about oblivion although i am one who thinks the story is weak because of this aspect it kinda spans the story out so much that it is dull and hard to follow...yes it also had some bad voice acting not to mention a few other flaws but like i said every game has got its own thing that sets it apart from the rest be it a storyline that touches you like your gf never could or a challenge that takes skill and bit of know how with a lotta damn im good after its all said and done. theres lots of other things i think make up a good rpg but thats the 3 i think that matter the most.

For most people it's pretty GRAPHICS, closely followed by much sentimentality within the story.

For me, an RPG can be good if the game is a decent enough compromise between
character build options, tactical complexity, encounter design, narrative choices, puzzles and overal challenge.

Combat in RPGs usually sucks, so it typically falls to messing with the statistics, encountering varied monster designs and picking some choices with consequences, to keep me entertained.
I also like a good presentation, but I have some tolerance for primitive graphics, generic music and cheesy voice-overs. I don't mind bad, cliched plots or I wouldn't be playing at all.

RPG needs a good story, backstory, world, characters, good means to progress through the story.

It basically needs to become a good game, and then improve on every aspect of that.
