I don't get why people get all pretentious about "being a man". You're a man once you stop developing physically, if you want to be technical.
Physically someone can be a man, but mentally they're still a child.
Quite a few guys are like this.

I don't mean still liking cartoons or something.
Then they're still a man, just immature.
When we're talking about being a man, we're talking about having the mindset of a man, not being physically a man.
What I'm saying is that I don't think you can define who a man is, because people are different. What might be manly where you are, may be the opposite where I am.
I think you have no idea what you're talking about. Manliness has roughly the same meaning in most parts of the globe, and people like you want to screw up what has worked fine for thousands of years.

What makes a man a Man?

Imperfection. Flaws. Character. These qualities are found in every single living person, and there is no human being alive in the world who does not possess at least one of these qualities.

Flaws and imperfection define the average man, woman, and child, and without them, they wouldn't be human. Even if they make an effort, and succeed in correcting their flaws, and eventually better themselves, they will discover more flaws about themselves. It gives them character. It makes them more aware of themselves, and as a result, they become better people.

What makes a man, is it the woman in his arms...
just cause she has big titties?

Or is it the way, he fights every day?
...
no it's probly the titties!

DVDA is a funny band at times. =]

Though personally I must say the whole question is arbitrary and subjective =/

I've got a question for you, fellow Escapees.

A while ago I made a thread about some personal problems. One poster suggested that I should join the Marines as 'they'll make a man out of you, some can live their entire lives without being a man.' And that got me wondering; what is it that makes a man a Man? What separates the men from the boys, so to speak.

Is it a ritual, is it a certain rite of passage, is it an achievement or a state of mind, and is it important to become a man? Do discuss.
Well, Joseph Campbell had some interesting things to say about this in The Power of Myth. He decried the gradual stripping away of rites of passage in Western society - he used something entirely from his age, that children wear trousers now. That was a symbol of growing up in his time.

We hear often the term 'little man' and see kids becoming more and more precocious, simply because their parents want 'best friends' and not children. Being a man is of course entirely subjective, and I would rather use the mark of adulthood instead.

No, it's probably the titties.

EDIT: Goddamn it, Ninja'd!

EDIT 2: Goddamn again! Ninjai'd!!

Anyway, what makes a man is probably the strength to stand up and hold your ground, physically, mentally and emotionally and progress forwards in doing the right thing.

That was wasn't needed. I stated my point of view, if you really have that much of a problem with someone on the internet (to the point where you need to insult me) having a different opinion than yourself, then maybe you should stay away from topics like these.
I do know what I'm talking about, so if you want to continue what I thought was a civil discussion, then please, keep the insulting to a minimum.

Also,
and people like you want to screw up what has worked fine for thousands of years.
I'm not sure where that came from. What is it, exactly which has "worked fine for thousands of years"? You didn't explain what that was.

How do you know? Have you studied the cultures of every race and people on the planet?

Biologically speaking, a penis.

But in all seriousness, a man is defined by two things: His courage and his word.

Courage, in the words of Clint Eastwood was "Being scared to death and saddling up anyway."
A man's word, well - that's his bond. If he breaks that bond often, then he ain't worth spit IMO.

Bravery isn't just confined to the armed forces, take a look at the Emergency Services for example.

Look, think whatever you want, I'm done with this little argument. I did too much arguing over in the March Mayhem forums, I'm getting tired of fighting with people who won't listen.

I somehow feel what actually we are talking about is being a stereotype of a macho man. I defenitly would never want to be that as despite their masculanity they resemble the mentality of a 5th grade bully boy.

I agree with this. Get a place, get a job and rule over your own life.

So you attack me without making any sort of argument, I counter by stating my argument yet again, and then you respond by attacking me again and still not making an argument against mine, and yet I'm one of the "people who won't listen"
Hmm...
It seems a bit like the pot is calling the kettle black.

A penis is generally a good indicator.

Seriously though, I'm not sure. At the minute I feel its just about your ability to bottle up and get on with things.

You want to be a man, or do you want to be a pussy and have all the men laugh at you and beat the shit out of you on a regular basis? Take your pick.
If you're the definition of a 'Man' then I'll pass. I'd rather be a pussy than a dick :)

A man is someone who meets a nice girl and helps her. He erases her insecurities, he makes her feel loved when no one else will even talk to her, he supports her when things get tough. He starts a family with her, and provides this girl and his kids with not just emotional support, but financial support, gives them a shelter over their heads and puts food on the table. He protects them, from bullies and poverty alike. That, that is a man, in my opinion.

So a man who takes care of his family, as in takes care of the household etc etc, while his wife brings in the money is not a man?

Wasn't my point. Not saying you gotta be a dick to be a man, but you gotta be tough to stand up to the dicks rather than be the pussy that gets fucked all day by them.
