As soon as the music is so loud it actually vibrates the house and makes it impossible to hear anyone talk, THEN it's officially a party. As long as there's at least 6 people. Otherwise it's just a group of idiots sitting around being idiots.

I'm a total shut-in and even i know this.
Alcohol.
They only need to think they had a good time, get them so drunk they can't remember a thing that happened, they will assume that it was a good party, and you will in turn be recognized as someone who throws good parties.

Alternatively, a mass orgy.

Booze, hopefully some food, a good ratio of men to women (a sausage fest is no fun, and neither is a taco party), and good music that isn't overpowering/doesn't destroy opportunities for conversation.

At the bare minimum, you need one person.

Yes, you totally can party alone.

Shut up!
I'll second this. Party of one MOFO's. The best part of this kind of party is when it's your shout you only pay for yourself! It's great.

Well you're gonna need someone to hold the frontline, so a fighter, paladin, or warden would be a good place to start. Next you're gonna need someone to keep them alive, so a cleric or priest is a good idea. And since surviving isn't going to progress through the dungeon, some damage dealers are also needed if you want the party to get anywhere. A rogue and a wizard are the classic choices, but warlocks, barbarians, rangers, psions, and druids do the job just as well. If you want it to be bigger, you're gonna need more of everything but groups of 4 are the best to work with.

OT: A group of people, some entertainment, and something to eat/drink is all I figure. I've had tons of fun just playing games (anykind will do) or watching movies with friends.

My friends, some pizza and drinks, and Dj Hero 2. If we get bored of that we go hit each other with those Nerf swords, axes, maces, and shields.

Don't say that that's nerdy until you've actually tried it. Sword fighting is hilariously awesome.
You sir, are full of this thing people call "awesome". Although when my friends and I go at it, we generally play Halo or Borderlands, but any game really. We also use sticks (wooden ones you sick-o's (; ) instead of nerf, because we can't find nerf shields. But we are all extremely skilled at the art of blocking with our stick weapons...

OT: Basically I guess it depends on what kind of party? I dunno, there exist a lot of definitions for party. But I go with the one I stated above ;)

Super Smash Bros., Hi-C, and chicken salad.

Also, a cake with delicious gummy army men on it.

This describes a combination of two of my childhood birthday parties.

I make a party. Duh.

No, I think a collection of good friends, some food and some sort of media makes a party.

A good soundystem or 10, lots of various kinds of techno, the harder the better, drugs and at least 5 people, preferably a few hundred or more though.
