What makes Origin so terrible?

My 'hate' for Origin is the same as it is for Steam. Why the hell do I need this program running in order to play the games I've bought?

I have had Origin on my computer since day one and I haven't seen any reason to hate it.

Is it perfect?
No, but what is?

The whole 'scans your PC thing' was explained twice in a livestream and now users have the option to opt-OUT of that (funny no gaming sites covered that).
'Spyware' simply is an attack which isn't true.

For me the downloads are faster than steam, the offline mode works better.
My only issue is that the prices suck.

As a PC gamer I refuse to be stuck to Steam, Steam is great don't get me wrong but ONLY using Steam and nothing else is IMO a console mentality which makes many people who bash on consoles hypocrites.

The Origin team seem like good people and if you go onto the forums they do respond and they have done updates based upon what users wish.

The hate for Origin is pretty much just an extension of peoples hate for EA, while EA has done some terrible things in the past, I don't think they deserve all the hate they get.

I am sorry for those who have issue, but Origin simply works fine for me.

PS. The whole 'EA will ban you if you do X' thing is mostly never going to really happen.

EDIT:

Take Battlefield 3 for example, an Origin exclusive. I wanted an ingame server browser where I could click join and then start playing right away. What I DIDN'T want is a stupid fucking browser-based launch page (Battlelog)
I understand not liking Battlelog, but that's NOT an Origin issue.
That's something done by DICE and not really connected to the client.

Every time I hear "EA hate wagon" I think of Rush Limbaugh and other Republican's catchphrase "Drive-by media" or any other equally useless catchphrase. I mean shit look how many posters used it on the front page, I know a lot of people hate EA but now I guess we'll need a catchy phrase to define the haters of EA Haters. The fact that they're insulting those who got on the EA hate bandwagon when they themselves are just another bandwagon is laughably ironic, almost as ironic as Movie Bob calling out angry nerds.
Tu quoque
Appeal to hypocrasy.
Logical fallacy.

The point that a large amount of people quite literally dont have another reason to hate Origin other than "It is EA" isn't undermined that a large part is only pointing it out as a counter culture.
My issue is more due to the use of a crappy catch-phrase then their stance on the subject, it can be argued that the bandwagon effect in large part plays into the reason many attack the "EA Bandwagon haters" further demonstrated by their use of common catchphrases and reasoning. I do not attack the standpoint that many who hate EA just do so because it's what others have done, I attack those who argue this while bringing up the bandwagon effect while they themselves are in the bandwagon effect.

Again I was laughing at the irony, as well as the possibility of future bangwagon effects being coupled with my own given statement.

Here is the deal: Valve Solved my problems with their games a few years back, got me my steam account back after someone hacked it and this took only 3 days at the most. Besides nothing I have read matches my adventures with Origin... If you can help please do so, I have paid 1/3 of the monthly salary in my country for the stupid BF3 and its been an entire year and I cant play it.
Well, if Valve hasn't caused you any problems, it must be flawless.

I think it's combination of rabid EA hate, some mas fear of an EULA clause in the software that apparently is gone now, and the fact that its inferior to Steam (It's hard to beat something that's been perfect over many years with your new product). I also think that gamers are kind of lazy and would rather complain and not mess with some new and thing, even though Valve often seems to be building a monopoly and only by their good graces do they not screw over everyone with there almost unlimited power in Steam.

I have no problems with Origin, It's the constant switching between Uplay/Origin/Steam that bothers me

Only problem thus far was that the overlay would make my mouse lag in BF3, But I didnt use the overlay not even once so I just disabled it.

Because it is an extra complication that has been added in an attempt to be "competition" without actually being competitive.

Their version of competition is to only release EA games on their console. It's not competition, it's brand segregation.

I don't like needing about 5 different types of third party online retail outlet programs on my computer to access my personal game library. It's like the console wars have come to PCs.
You know what's worse? Only having one option. When I buy the disc based versions of Skyrim and Saints Row the Third and Dawn of War 2: Retribution, and they require me to register them with Steam, it bugs the shit out of me. Because Valve had nothing to do with these games, other than they require Valve's DRM.

The thing is, for all of Steam's failings they are less intrusive and far more streamlined than any other system while also possessing the largest library.

There is no barrier to entry in the market, it just comes off as a monopoly because it out-performs its competition.

For the record, I don't hate EA. Hell, I'm planning to buy Dead Space 3 day-one.

Now that that's out of the way. I hate Origin. I find it to be less stable than Steam, it has an abysmally small library of games, the prices are rarely competitive, picking up DLC is a pain, its customer service is typically unhelpful, you can potentially lose access to all of your games as a punishment for a first-time minor offense on the boards (like saying a swear word, or having any criticism toward Origin, EA, or EA products), and it's just one more program in an ever-growing list of bullshit programs (Steam included) that I'm forced to deal with if I want to play a game.

That said, I'd rather deal with Origin in its current state over uPlay in its current state any day.

DRM is annoying, legitimate consumer punishing, BS in all of its forms. That said Steam is one of the least intrusive and more easily forgiven forms due to the great sale prices and relative ease of getting it to go offline. I really wouldn't mind Origin so much if it at least offered some decent deals to sweeten the bitter pill of having to have a separate client just for EA games.
It's not being allowed the freedom to mod the game I paid for without risking my account being banned and losing access to all the other games I bought that's the deal breaker for me. And the only purpose that serves is to try make sure you buy EA's future dlcs instead of having free mods to enjoy.

Literally because it isn't Steam. The only purpose Origin serves is to get ME3 onto your pc. But since I already own the ME series on 360, I don't really fancy installing an entire distribution platform just to get one game I already have somewhere else.

Theres also the many many bad pr decisions that EA have made over the years which makes their service appeal to me even less.

Due to many reasons, but mainly due to it's customer service being shitty beyond human imagination. I would like to quote someone's story here:

The sad thing is, when you start a google search on this, you can see hundreds of similar incidents like this guy here had.

Heh... if I were a support representative, and I had someone on the phone calling me an idiot and using foul language, I don't care what his problem was, i'd hang up on him too. *Shrugs*

I mean, seriously, do people have no self control that they have to resort to such petty behavior? Yes, he got double charged. It happened to me once on Steam. It was a hassle to get my money back because their support ticket response time is DAYS.

And of course Google is riddled with it. I also Google Searched why "Origin isn't that bad" and got a lot of articles too.

Point being... you look hard enough, you'll find it, especially on the internet.

No, Origin is not terrible, heh. It connects faster than Steam, has a better platform than Steam, etc. I will continue to use Steam because their catalogue is so good, and I like the service they provide... but damn, I wish they would spend more time bringing their client up to date instead of working on a f***ing console.
