What Makes PC Controls so Great?

I generally play RPG and RTS games, so keyboard/mouse does way more of what I want than a controller does for those game types. In general I find that I suck at FPS no matter which I use though.

The matter of preference argument only holds so much water though. People can certainly have their own preference, but the mouse is more precise than an analog stick and that is a fact. Someone can legitimately prefer Honda over Ferrari, that does not mean that the Ferrari isn't a better car.

Preference creates practice and practice makes perfect.

Apparently the mouse is better for more precision aiming.

Which is funny, Since I'm infinitely better at aiming on a console than my PC.
Most likely because you've had a lot more practice at your console than your PC. Would I be correct in that assumption?
Nope, Back in the PS2 era I would mainly play games that wouldn't involve guns at all, or if they did it would be auto aim. I played a shit ton of PC shooters before I got a PS3, I was actually hesitant to play any FPS on my PS3 since I knew I would be shit at it. But I do really well (with aim assist turned OFF)on a console now, To the point where I can't snipe properly on my PC now.
How are you judging your skill at aiming?

Mouse is far more accurate and much faster than a controller. If you're judging it by your skill in a multiplayer scenario than I would suggest it's because in multiplayer all players are limited to the functionality of either the mouse/keyboard or controller. That is playing with mouse and keyboard would allow for better developed skills in speed and accuracy than a console controller which limits the ability of the player. I'm not sure about in single player though. I've never bothered to test the difference between the same game on different platforms.

I am simply going off of my experience using both. I honestly can't imagine using a PC compatible 360 or PS controller in a PC FPS and doing as well as you would with a mouse/keyboard. You could always test it to prove a point though?

OT: I prefer RPGs so I would rather play with m/k. When it comes to anything else I don't really care. My computers starting to get on so I've taken to going easy on it and getting everything other than RPGs on 360.

Oh and I don't play RTS.

So how is it better?
Don't try and figure it out, find out through practical experience. Play Halo on an Xbox, then go play it on a PC.

Notice how much faster you make those headshots.

In high level FPS-play you would get raped using a controller in place of a mouse/keyboard. In RTS you would get raped so much it wouldn't even be funny. Imagine playing a game of starcraft with a joypad.

Some people think a mouse and keyboard is better and some people think a controller is better. It is all just preference, nothing more.

I don't like the whole W,A,S,D keyboard movement. I usually switch to using the arrow keys to move.

I don't know if I should even respond to this thread. It takes a pretty dense person not to see the obvious differences between keyboard/mouse and controller.

Aiming is only part of the things that are easier with a precision mouse. I don't care if you can "aim better on a controller". I guarantee I can do it faster with a mouse. I can go from directly behind me to in front of me in less than a second without pushing any extra buttons.

Then there's menu systems. No cycling through weapons. 1-0 gets me what I need. Grenades never get accidently thrown from a trigger, I know how to press g. Crouching and jumping can happen at the same time, making it possible to do a rocket jump.

I can't aim for shit with a console controller. It's just a mess. Some people have it sussed, me, I can spend a minute trying to get the crosshair on someone's head.

The thing with console controls is that they make allowances to make things that don't neccesarily work well on them work... in a sense. That probably didn't make any sense so I'll explain - look at auto aim. That's just one example of the realisation that aiming is not as easy on consoles so allowances must be made so they compete with mouse aiming. This I think worked which is great. Take however the console Halo RTS you had attempts to make moving around and selecting units equal to the ease of using a mouse and keyboard to do the same. Didn't work.

But in the end it is down to what you're used to. Maybe if I actually owned a console and played console games I'd master the fiddly little fuckers that have been my major reason not to spend money on a console for years.

You are used to them. Console controls are better, plain and simple. Unless you are playing an RTS they are always better. And that is because they are made for playing games, not typing.
Oh no you di'nt!

Plain and simple it is, but it's not just black and white like you said. You can't say one is better than the other, you might be terrible on a keyboard and mouse, but someone else might be terrible on a controller. It is different with everyone, it's to do with what they are used to and what they have practised most on.

Controllers are made for games, yes, but the keyboard and mouse game controls have also been established for years. You can get used to anything if you try it for long enough!

I don`t PC controls are better, it just depends on the game.

For example:Have you tried to play Devil May Cry on PC?

Its a matter of preference, don't you see, you can obviously be as effective at getting nails in the wall with a screwdriver as a hammer... :)

A mouse is a much faster, more accurate aiming tool than the knobs on a controller.

Other than that, they really aren't any better. At least with a controller, you know for certain where all the God-damn buttons are.
It's about the mouse mainly, you can't compare buttons. It's the aiming, and if you are like me you will suck at console shooters, because of the analog stick, like you said.

How do you intend to screw screws into the wall with a hammer

Full accuracy, more hotkeys, more fingers. See, when you're playing an FPS on the 360 and you want to jump, you have to take your finger off of a trigger to press the button which means you can't jump and look around at the same time. On the PC, however, you can jump and spin around completely. Also, on Bad Company 2 if you want to look around, move, and plant/defuse a bomb, then you have to contort your hand to make it work. Some games are just made for consoles, though. There's a reason why most console FPS games need auto-aim to help people while PC games don't. Of course, when I was growing up my house was a PC house.
