I can't discern why it's awesome, it just... is. I think it's the melding of settings that does it for me. That and I'm a sucker for the time period, with Sherlock Holmes and King Solomon's Mines, and all that.

The cachet of sci-fi with the romanticism of the victorian age? What's not to like?

I've always liked the idea of the Industrial Revolution occurring in a world of magic. There was an RPG released several years ago called Arcanum that dealt with that very idea, and I liked it a lot. One of the main ideas was that the technology of guns and steam-powered-what-have-yous clashed greatly with traditional magic, and things went haywire when two powerful people from opposite ends of the spectrum fought each other. You had the option of pursuing the path you wanted, with an in-game meter telling you which side you favored.

I'm starting to ramble. Check it out!

I've always thought that this premise would make an excellent MMORPG.

Badass steampunk webcomic if you've got the time to spare.

The creators prefer to call it 'gaslamp fantasy' because it fits the tone more or something, but bottom line this defines for me why steampunk is so spiffing.

Is Final Fantasy VI considered Steampunk? Because if it is, then I think Steampunk is awesome.
It sure is. In places anyway.

I personally love steampunk because it shows how technology might have evolved if fashions never changed. Like Fallout use of 1950's America, but using Victorian England instead.

Plus you know, seeing gears, pistons and valves always looks visually stunning when it's done to power something. To hell with practicality, polished brass is where it's at!

I like to think sometimes that if Britain was still the worlds super-power, we'd be living in a steampunk age... *sigh*

Because it's history.. but badass.
I couldn't not make that picture my new desktop.
I assume you would have it as your desktop on THIS computer...

Does anyone remember The Chaos Engine?

That game made me love Steampunk even before I could appreciate what it was.

At age 13 I wasn't aware of the term or anything else Steampunk, but there was just something about the Victorian/Sci-Fi theme I loved, despite not being a big fan of 2D shooters.

This is a game that I'd love to see a remake of, maybe as a 3rd person shooter, but with richer storytelling and RPG elements.

I also think it would make a pretty good film, if handled by a talented director and story writer.

Its a validation of superfluiuos things.
In a world run by steam and brass, everything needs to be bigger, darker, and bulkier. And then, you throw in a time period in limbo between modern day thought and relatively archaic technology in order to make it feel more feesiable.

I don't know, maybe you could also tell me why the Railway Rifle from F3 ISN'T pure awesome.
I've only played Bioshock, but then, it has some tech elements to it as well.

Steampunk is so awesome because the elements of the genre are things we love on their own, and when they come together... well I don't think I need to say how good it is, do I?

It's the love of clockwork, simple enough for you to be able to mess with it with a novice's ability but complex enough to amazing things.

It's the effect of things being made for practicality only but still giving off a sense of fashion. You see it in the way a clocks gear work together when it is working properly, you see it in a steam train waiting at a station with it values bellowing steam and smoke. And you, definitely, know what I talking about when you see a hot girl with bulky googles and a tool belt strapped on whilst she messes with some engine.

It's the idea that you create something amazing with just a brass, pistons and some bolts, and you done have to care how it looks as long as it works.

It's the idea that every machine around can easily be tinkered with (come on you mad mechanics you know you want to).

It's the risk that steam and gears can harm you at any second and that society isn't caring enough to add health and safety features, you can be killed by whilst working here, you can be hurt if you don't stay on your toes and figure out how things work.

It's the industrial revolution effect, massive changes are happening, technology coming into a world where no-one even seen it before. The Crossing of two completely different worlds.

Steampunk is the beauty of practicality along with crude and simple things, and how they come together to make Amazing things happen!

And I sincerely hope developers can pay proper respect to this otherwise I coming for them with a wrench and a revolver!

....

( I edited the girl bit sooooo many times as, well, this isn't a Fantasy thread!)

It's elemental, it's turning water and fire into power.

It harkens back to the early days of self-powered engineering.

It's largely infeasible, and is often fantastical in approach for video games.

It's a quaint and underused alternative to high tech.

There are lots of reasons it's popular.

1 part Bronze.

4 parts Bolts.

1 part Steam.

1/2 a part The chugging of an engine.

These are the ingredients needed to make something so blatantly awesome you stop and stare.

Mix in a bowl, stir while picking out what your recipe will end up as (Batter is very versatile.)

Pour and mold, work fast! Work diligently!

Sit back, nod. You have created a masterpiece that transcends time lines and imagination. Something that is both possible and impossible. Something that could have been given imagination and innovation in the face of technological progress.

All hail the bronze bolted steam machine.

I find that it can be done really well or just generic and bland. Some books do it but without any innovation, but Necromundia in the GW universe was pretty cool. I prefer straight up medieval fantasy though

1. Steampunk just looks cool. Its got a crazy awesome feel to it that drags you in.
2. Top hats and coat tails kick ass.
3. It has a feel to it that kind of makes steampunk a little creepy. While its beautiful and often very elaborate you also get a sense of some kind of mad scientist being around the corner and some guy with a big curly mustache running at you with a coal powered tommy gun.
4. Watch "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack" and "Wild Wild West"

I don't know but i wish it would go back to were it was.

I've seen the steampunk computer some guy designed and that was pretty tight i must admit, but now everybody seems to be getting into it...steampunk bracelets, watches, blah blah blah.
