It runs on many things, but mainly this guy. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/profiles/view] And bacon. Delicious, delicious bacon.
Man, that guy is a dick. :p

OT - It's mainly down to the people and the hard working mods.

An intricate system of pulleys, levers, pistons, hamsters and the occasional bottle of wine.
In all seriousness?
It's a mix of quite a few things:
A brilliant moderator team that actually knows how to moderate without coming across as either lazy or over-the-top (you can disagree if you want, I'll respect your opinion)
The staff that work tirelessly to bring up site updates, content and news day in, day out.
And finally, you. Yes, you, reading this.
You've helped, in your own special way, make the Escapist what it is.

Why, it's me off course.

Ask anyone. Before I joined, the escapist was a barren wasteland of bad jokes and terrible puns.

These forums have zero accountability in the sense that you could say the stupidest, closed-minded and ignorant things around here and get away with it. Just as long as you don't call anyone any names[footnote]Not always true.[/footnote]. The more time passes, the more sick I am of that attitude within the community.
I think that went out the window with the "Pedophilia is fine as long as there's no sex" threads...

Well, assuming the Escapist DOES work, I would be obliged to say that only those on the inside know how it all works. Given recent histories, I would also be obliged to snark that the Escapist does some rather distasteful things to get by, or is profoundly negligent, or both. Even then, I am not very optimistic about its future. So, for now, I offer this explanation in lieu of anything definite: Inertia.
This. In addition I would snark and say it works with javascript and probably php on the server which creates some of the html.

Really really picky pedants who cant stand badly written posts and require good spelling and grammar as mandatory before anything is going to taken seriously.

Want to know what makes the escapist work?

An overbearing sense of self-importance, smugness, and liberal beliefs.
Which would be exemplified by the sort of person who mindlessly kibitzer's his way into a thread with a half-arsed accusation that typifies the very things he is accusing people of, wouldn't you agree?

It's almost comical though. Just in every single way, from the militant atheists slapping down anyone with any spiritual belief with condescending almost-insults, to the sheer overcompensating liberalism that can be copy-pasted as a symbol of "superiority" on to any subject.

....God, I hate these forums.

Well, in an "almost everyone believes this" kind of way.

Why are you still here then?

You're not one of these people who watches a TV show just for stuff to complain about are you?

The sheet magnitude of how handsome I am.
And how that in turn innately draws people to this site.
You're welcome.
This is true.
When all members share a common interest, such as our's in Pimppeter's dashing looks, the community is bound to this core which keeps it from breaking apart and fighting among itself.

However, when topics of controversy surrounding this core are brought up, they are likely to incite a more violent infighting than in forums that are not bound by such a core.
An example of this would be the, formerly frequent, discussions on whether it is morally right to use Pimppeter's childhood pictures for private purposes.
In the past, these topics were discussed under the guise of paedophilia.
Due to their inflammatory nature, such threads are now banned in the forums.

The mods then, and their strict enforcement of the rules, are a necessity to keep the community in line and immediately crush any trolls and spammers that may try their hands in the forums.
