The basic stuff, really, I used to take karate (but lost interest after a while), and last semester I took a self-defense course in College. Now I wanna take up kickboxing...

I've taken Akido, Boxing, Muay Thai, Krav Maga, Judo, Capoeira, and CDT in the past. I don't practice any of them currently. I have found that in the case of self defense it is best to take what you excel at in each form and apply it to create your own style. If you want to stay in shape and spar a lot, something like Muay Thai, Tae Kwon Do, Kick-Boxing, or Karate would be best. Just remember, there is no one true way of fighting, every style has it's merits and weaknesses.

I'd love to know Krav Maga. But for now, my technique involves a lot of shouting and flailing at empty air.

Even if I don't hit my assailant, maybe they'll think I'm crazy and not mess with me.

I'm thinking about starting Boxing soon and possibly doing Krav Maga next year and I was wondering what experience my fellow Escapists had to offer or any advice regarding these two or any other forms of martial art also general discussion thread regarding it.
I've studied Tae Kwon Do a little. As far as advice is concerned, train hard. If you are doing any kind of competitive sparring, or in boxing pretty much at all, do exorcises to reduce your sight-to-action reaction time. You can probably find some online.

US Army combatives up to tier 2, which is mostly Brazilian Jiu-jitsu... and a few months of Krav Maga. The rest of my training involves weapons. A little bit of kenjutsu, a little fiore, and a lot of firearms training with tactical movement thrown in.

My self defense basically amounts to "kick em in the balls and run".
Not the best line of defense to live life through.

I personally really wanna learn kick boxing though. :I
I will watch this thread, as I am quite interested.
That's actually the worst defense plan ever. A person balls will shrink at the first sign of exercise because the blood is needed elsewhere, and adrenaline can go a long way in making that hurt less. Trust me, a kick to the balls is barely noticeable if someone is expecting it. Your best bet would be to find a weapon or run.
What? For some reason I want to test that statement, but if you're lying, that'll suck.

Any links or vids?
Actually, ill verify this. Its due to the testicles retracting towards the body when the person is alert. And as such, when you perform the kick, it comes out as more of a slap than a blow. And since it doesnt crush the Scrotum against the body, it does very little.
Depends how you deliver the kick. Slamming the foot straight up the groin isn't ideal. On the other hand, scooping your foot back towards you as you impact ... well, let's just say that works quite well.

At least that would actually work.
Provided of course, that the other person allows themself to be kicked.

I reached about 5th kyu in Hontai Takagi Yōshin ryū jujutsu until breaking my heel bone (unrelated), so I'm horribly out of practice; I probably wouldn't stand up too well in a fight.
