I usually watch something, a TV show or something. I require further entertainment through long loading screens. If pressed, I usually shove 'folk rock', 'hardcore' or 'speed metal' into Last.fm when PC gaming.

Depends on the game, I usually have a varied mix from death metal to dance/trance/hardcore. But when I play UT, its hard trance all the way. You cant beat Armin Van Buuren for that.

Rob Inglis] Sorry if this is boring, but I usually listen to the in-game music.
Same, most games I play have music worth listening too.

But if it is multiplayer or a game with little story and crappy music (i.e. Quake 2):

Radiohead
Tool
Muse
Placebo
Cog
The Mars Volta
Queens of the Stone Age
Chemical Brothers
Joy Division

EDIT: Danm Quote for Inglis won't work.

Slayer. I pretty much listen to Slayer all the time. Throw in some occasional old school thrash, early Metallica or Megadeth, maybe some Sacred Reich.

Dude, check out Porcupine Tree on youtube, they have metal roots and great musicianship - you might like them.
Nope.

My neighbors hate me when I play this at night, I'm not sure why.

It might be that the bass in the song plus my stereo is enough to knock shit off their walls, and as you all know, that's the best thing to have happening at 3 am. :D

E: This thread needs this as well.

When I'm not listening to the music in the game, Just techno usually. I really have been taking a liking to E.S. Posthumus.

All sorts of things, it depends on the game.

In games like Half-Life 2, for example, I listen to the in-game music. But when I'm messing around in Garry's Mod or going for a drive in a racing game, I hand pick tracks that suit what I'm doing.

- Cruising along the French coast in a Porsche 356B listening to Propellerheads - History Repeating.

- Fighting fast zombies underwater with the TF2 machete while listening to Leftfield - Phat Planet.

You get the idea.

I only really have custom music in racing games or GTA, but when I do, it's everything, Bach to the Beastie Boys and everything in between.

Depends entirely on the game.

If it's a much more esoteric game that requires a lot of exploration, maybe something a little more atmospheric. Some William Orbit, Tempest, or Kid A-era Radiohead.

If it's a 1st person that requires a little less thought, probably some industrial or prog metal. KMFDM and Ministry are always good for that.

More often than not I prefer to just let the game's soundtrack play for itself.

I only play my own music when I play racing games, so it's usually Killing Joke or Ministry; some times I'll pop in some Front 242 or Soundgarden, but the first two I mentioned are normally the ones I play.
